MLM Hash Tags: Everything You Need to Know

Today, I’m going to educate you about MLM Hash Tags? If you are anything like I was a few months back, you might be wondering what a hash tag even is. In the paragraphs below, I want to share what they are, how to use them effectively, and provide some of my best tips for success. Enjoy the information.

What is a Hash Tag?

Let’s start out by defining the term “hash tag” from a reputable source online.

A hashtag—introduced by the octothorpe symbol —is a type of metadata tag used on social networks such as Twitter and other microblogging services. It lets users apply dynamic, user-generated tagging that helps other users easily find messages with a specific theme or content. ~ Source: Wikipedia

Social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook are the most popular places you will see hash tags.

Why Should You Use Hash Tags?

Here’s what the experts have to say about why you should use hash tags with your social media posts.

# 1: Higher ClickThrough Rates

By using hash tags with your social media posts you typically get better clickthrough rates and more engagement.

Hashtags improve your clickthrough rates. According to research from Buddy Media, tweets with hashtags receive twice as much engagement as those that don’t. Put another way, you can double your engagement and increase clickthrough rates by including hashtags. Interestingly, there does seem to be an upper limit. Tweets with more than two hashtags saw engagement drop by 17%. Perhaps because too many hashtags look spammy. This research is for Twitter; there doesn’t seem to be the same bias on Instagram. ~ Source: TakeFlyte.com

# 2: Increase Visibility & Presence

The whole purpose of marketing is to get your name out there so you can attract new customers. You need “eyeballs” on your offers and messages. Hash tags help you do that.

Hashtags work. They help increase your social media presence as they make your content viewable by anyone who has an interest in your hashtag as it goes beyond just your followers. Hashtags can help you build a brand for your business or yourself by engaging with customers and joining the conversation about what’s trending. If you participate in high-traffic conversation by discovering the biggest trending topics, you are more likely to gain great visibility to your business. The more visibility you get, the more likely you are able to create a larger audience and a larger audience exponentially increases the likelihood of fresh leads for your business. ~ Source: Business2Community.com

Think of hash tags as one more tool in your marketing tool box.

How Do You Use Them?

Her’s what Twitter said about how to use hash tags with your tweets.

  • You cannot add spaces or punctuation in a hashtag, or it will not work properly.
  • If you Tweet with a hashtag on a public account, anyone who does a search for that hashtag may find your Tweet.
  • We recommend using no more than 2 hashtags per Tweet as best practice, but you may use as many hashtags in a Tweet as you like.
  • Type a hashtagged keyword in the search bar to discover content and accounts based on your interests.

In a nutshell, you simply add the # symbol and then type in your hash tag. An example might be #love. You add the hash tags to your content and posts.

Tips for Success

Here are some tips for success using hash tags in your social media posts.

# 1: Be Specific

Remember: The more you niche down your target market, the more customers you’ll attract.

The same idea goes for social media posts and hashtags. The more specific and targeted your hashtags are, the more opportunities your target audience will have to see you.

Try and home in on a passionate community that shares an interest in one specific theme. The more specific you can get with your hashtag, the more targeted your audience will be—and a targeted audience generally means better engagement.

If you don’t have your own business hashtag, find one or two existing ones that really fit the photo.

Say, for example, your business sells baby products. Instead of using #parents—resulting in parents of children of all ages—opt for #newmom. The hashtag #newmom is specific to mothers of newborns—your target customer.

# 2: Less is More

Less is more. The more hash tags you use, the worse (in many cases). Ideally, you want to use 1-2 hash tags with each of your social media posts. However, each social media site is different. For example, you’ll probably use fewer hash tags with Twitter than you would with Instagram.

A study from TrackMaven looked at Instagram accounts with 1,000 followers or less and found that it’s possible to achieve maximum engagement when you use around 11 hashtags. However, on the other hand, a similar study from Klear found that you receive the most engagement with two hashtags, and your results will begin to dip if you use too many. ~ Source: Upleap.com

# 3: Discover What’s Trending

It makes no sense to use hash tags that no one is searching for. You also want to avoid trademarked names. There are plenty of tools online to help you discover trends, and to see if the hashtag you are considering is already being used (or is worth using).

Before you settle on a hashtag, make sure you search Twitter for it. Specifically, you want to make sure nobody else is using the same hashtag and that it’s not tied to anything negative or outside your brand. If your desired hashtag was used several years ago, it’s probably safe to use it. But if a well-known brand is using it as a part of a current campaign, it’ll create a lot of confusion and make your legal team cringe. ~ Source: Sprout Social

  1. I learned about hash tags several years ago. I can honestly say that using hashtags in my social media posts resulted in more traffic and exposures.

If you think of how many times you have searched for things online, such as “how to take a screenshot” or “red bumps on my arm” there’s a good chance you didn’t always find what you were looking for. If someone were to #screenshots or #redbumps in their article then when you did the search it would pop up.

Adding them to my posts just “steered” the people who are specifically looking for my type of products in my direction.

    1. Most definitely, Kara. I only started using hash tags this past year. I never really understood them prior to that. Using hash tags in my social media posts and tweets has definitely led to added exposure and traffic to my website. You can even search online for trending hash tags and use some of them in your social media posts. It helps the visitor find the information they need and it helps you get more exposure. That’s the ultimate win-win.
