Width vs Depth in Your MLM Downline Organization

Today, I’d like to share some helpful tips with you about building width vs. depth in your MLM downline.  

I once heard a famous Amway Diamond tell me that “width” made him profitable and “depth” made him rich.

Knowing what I know now, I must agree with him!

The quickest way to make money in your network marketing business is to build your width.

This is the people you personally sponsor into the business.

These folks are often called your front line distributors.

Normally, your largest commissions (as a percentage) come from personally sponsored people, and each level of your group, pays you a little bit less.

As an example, my company pays 25% on level one, 10% on level two and 5% on level three.

Keep in mind these percentages will vary a lot from company to company.

Your ultimate goal is to sponsor enough people personally UNTIL you find five really serious people who go out and do the same thing that you did.

During your first couple of years in the business, your primary focus will be on building your width, aka personal recruiting.

You want to recruit as many people as you possibly can UNTIL you have your key leaders in place.

If you study top earners in our industry, you will quickly discover that most of them have (in most cases) personally sponsored at least 100-200 people, and sometimes more, in order to find these five key individuals.

From my own personal experience, I’ve found that about 1 in 50 people is serious.

Based on that number you will need to sponsor somewhere around 200 to 300 people to find your five serious people.

The only exception to that would be if you are really good at tap-rooting and finding leaders in depth.

If that’s the case, you could sponsor a lot less people and still get great results.

Keep in mind, everyone’s number is different.

Your number could be slightly less or slightly more.

Some people have made millions in our industry, yet they sponsored less than 50 people personally.

Most top earners are also top recruiters.

In addition, just sponsoring a lot of people will not make you rich, or necessarily lead to a big team.

Nor will it give you a walk away income.

It will make you significant immediate profits, but the real money in network marketing comes from building depth, under each leg/line of your organization.

Some people call this taprooting and other people call it driving lines.

More importantly, most top earners who have personally sponsored 100-200 people make MOST of their income (at least 80 to 90 percent) from just two to three of these lines.

When you look at most six figure earners, at least 50% of their income comes from just ONE person, even if they’s sponsored hundreds of people.

Crazy!

One good leg/line can make you A LOT of money!

That’s the beauty of our industry.

But you have to work through the numbers to find these people.

The real money in network marketing comes from building a large team, not just building a large frontline.

Duplication and Multiplication.

Those are two words to remember.

If you sponsor hundreds of people and NONE of them duplicate what you did, or build a big team of their own, you will not succeed. 

When you personally sponsor people into your organization you add people.

When you help them succeed and build depth you multiply people.

Successful network marketing leaders realize that it’s about finding a lot of people who each do a little bit consistently each month, AND finding two or three key leaders who do a lot.

When you combine everyone’s efforts together, it adds up to a lot, and can earn you a substantial income.

Personally, I’d rather have 3-5 legs in my organization that are 10, 20 or 30 levels deep, than have personally sponsored 100-200 people on my front line who can’t sponsor anyone themselves.

If you don’t help people build depth, and achieve some success, you will be constantly replacing people in your team.  

Trust me, you don’t want that to happen.

It’s like having a revolving door in your business.

Here are a few key points you should remember about width vs. depth:

  • Width makes your profitable
  • Depth gives you long-term security
  • It’s hard to build depth until you’ve built some width
  • Typically, your best leaders will come in depth
  • Most top earners have personally sponsored 100-200 people, or more
  • Most top earners make 80 to 90 percent of their income from one to three lines in their organization
  • It’s better to have 10 legs that are each 30 levels deep than 300 front line legs with no depth
  • The only way you will ever be able to walk away from your business and have your income keep growing is if you build strong lines that are many, many levels deep and filled with leaders, backed by more leaders
  • One to three good lines can produce a high six to seven figure income

These are the major differences between building width and depth in your MLM Business.

At the end of the day you have to start out by building width, however, once you get some people sponsored who want to do the business, it would be in your best interest to help them get started and help them succeed.

And remember, width gives you instant profitability, but depth gives you long-term security. Ultimately, you want both.
