Why is Online MLM So Difficult?

Why is online MLM so difficult?  Personally, I think that’s a great question.  My goal in this article is to cover some of the common pitfalls and mistakes that most network marketers trying to build their business online make.

Since the internet explosion in the late 1990s and early 2000s, thousands of network marketers have transitioned their business to the internet.

A select few achieved tremendous success, while most failed miserably.

And while the internet is definitely SEXY, it’s a tough beast to conquer.

There are so many different things you have to know to succeed with online MLM.  A few things that come to mind include:

Just to name a few!

Combine all of that with the INTENSE competition online, and you have a recipe for disaster.

It takes most people SEVERAL YEARS just to figure out online MLM.  To be quite frank with you, there is a STEEP learning curve.  And most people aren’t willing to go through it.

Even worse, the internet changes daily, so what works for you this month might not even be around next month.

Don’t believe me?  Just ask anyone who was doing Google PPC a few years back?  Their accounts were terminated without notice and they lost their marketing strategy.

Or, when Google does an update and your blog goes from ranking on Page One to being deindexed.

Or Facebook changes their rules for fan pages and stops showing your updates to your OWN fans!

I could go on and on here, but I hope you are starting to get the point.

Another major problem with Online MLM is INFORMATION OVERLOAD.  There are millions of videos, articles and websites with contradicting information.

You don’t know who to trust.

You don’t know if you are being scammed.

Heck, you don’t know what you don’t know.

The truth is, Online MLM is HARDER than Old School MLM.  Few people will ever tell you that. But, it’s the truth as I see it.

At least with Old School MLM you have TRIED and TESTED techniques.

All you have to do is talk to people, get them to a meeting and follow up with them.

Anyone can do that!

Another major problem with Online MLM is the Shiny Object Syndrome.  Most people will receive 20 to 100 emails a day promoting the next greatest thing.

As a result, many folks jump from opportunity to opportunity, looking for the easiest way to get rich quick.

Now, I’m not saying all of this to be negative.

I think the Internet is a powerful thing.

But building your business online will not resolve your current challenges.

If you can’t connect with people, you wont’ succeed online.

If you’re scared to call people, you won’t succeed online.

If you don’t understand marketing, you won’t succeed online.

If you aren’t persistent and consistent, you won’t succeed online.

Starting to get the point?

Most people who struggle offline have the same struggles when they transition to the internet world.

Until you master your skills and mindset, nothing will help you.

So, what’s the solution?

If you want to succeed online, take the time to develop the skills and mindset.  Find a mentor, come up with a game plan, take massive action, learn from your mistakes, and stick with it a few YEARS.

That is the best advice I can give you.

My other advice would be to stick with Old School MLM.

It is true: trying to run a business online can be extremely frustrating sometimes. It often seems that just trying to figure out the Google and the Facebook rules (just to name a few) takes up more time than actually producing and servicing clients. I try to tell myself to ignore the ‘flavors of the day’ and concentrate on following the system that I have had in place for a couple of years. If nothing else, it keeps my stress level down.

It also seems to me Chuck, that if you have something new and different, online can work. Even if it is an older MLM, if you can develop a program that is completely different from all the rest, you just may win. One of the biggest keys with all of that is marketing. If you have a marketing approach that creates curiosity that in turn makes people want to try your product or service, you have a winning situation. I again go back to using both old and new school techniques. You just cannot go wrong that way.

Personally, I think using every method possible is the best bet. I have family members who are farmers in Iowa. When many were losing there farms, my Uncle was buying brand new tractors and combines. People asked him why. It is because he didn’t put all his faith in one item. He grows corn, soybeans, some wheat, raises hogs and cows, and also makes hay. When something is bad, something else is good. I believe MLM should be operated in the same fashion. Take advantage of all the avenues. Use both old and new school. Just my opinion.
