Everyone who joins our industry WANTS what it offers.
Can you blame them?
After all, who doesn’t want time and money freedom?
It’s very appealing.
However, once people actually join the industry something weird happens.
They might dream about the money and time freedom.
They might even “think” about their business 24/7, but most of these people do very little, if anything at all, to actually move their network marketing business forward.
Well, it happens for many reasons.
My goal today is to answer that question to the best of my ability, so you can get out of your own way and help others do the same thing.
As I see it, everyone has SOMETHING that holds them back.
Everyone has some type of “mental” obstacle to overcome.
I’ve had many obstacles to overcome myself, and it took me many years to make it happen.
Success always comes with a price.
It’s something you have to fight for and work for.
If success in life was easy, everyone would do it!
After being involved with and studying this great industry for more than 14 years now, here are the most common things I’ve found that hold people back.
# 1 Fear of Failure
This might just be the # 1 thing that holds people back in network marketing and life in general.
From the time we were small children we have been taught that failing is bad.
God forbid we try something new and fail.
After all, what would people think about us if we failed at something?
The Solution: Realize that every successful person in every endeavor has failed many, many times before they ever achieved success. After all, you can’t succeed your way to success. Instead, you must fail your way to success.
# 2 Fear of Rejection
People are scared to hear the word NO.
People are scared to be rejected.
Not everyone, but most people are.
People worry about what other people will think and say about them.
Solution: Take a moment and think back to when you were a young kid. When you heard the word NO that never stopped you from what you were trying to get. You would persist until you got a YES. You must realize that when people tell you NO, or reject you, it’s nothing personal. They’re just saying NO to what you are offering them.

# 3 Fear of Success
Many people actually fear success.
They fear what they will achieve.
They fear the extra income.
They fear who they might become on their journey to success.
They fear losing their friends.
Solution: Embrace success. Realize that the person you become on your journey to success is the best reward you will ever get. Success should be your goal in life, whatever it might mean to you.
# 4 Negative or Unsupportive Spouse
This is a VERY common thing that holds a lot of people back in the network marketing industry.
Many spouses are downright cruel and give their partner ultimatums if they join this industry or do anything different, other than their day job.
In only about 1 in every 100 cases are both partners excited about the business (my experience).
Solution: Talk with your spouse. Let them know what your dreams are. Explain WHY you want to do the business in the first place. Have them give you a probationary period for your business. Ask them to at least be neutral.
# 5 Comfort Zone
We all have a comfort zone.
So do you.
Sometimes it’s very hard to step out of our comfort zone and do things that make us uncomfortable.
This is normal and is something everyone must deal with.
After all, we are all creatures of habit.
Solution: Get in the habit of trying new things every single day. Go to different restaurants. Drive a different way to work. Hang out with some new people. Try things you wouldn’t normally try. You will quickly discover that your comfort zone is holding you back from many new and exciting experiences.
# 6 Low Self-Image or Worthiness Issues
You would be amazed at how many people in the world have low self-esteem and worthiness issues.
I see it every day.
People don’t think they are worthy or deserving of success or happiness, for whatever reason.
Solution: If this describes you, see a medical professional, counselor, minister or doctor. Get help if you need it. You are worthy. You are deserving. Stop selling yourself short.
# 7 The Business is Simply Not a Priority
If the business is not a priority for you, you will find an excuse to justify your inaction.
If it is a priority, you will find the time to get things done.
Show me someone’s calendar and checkbook and I can quickly show you someone’s priorities.
Solution: If you really want to succeed in your business you must make it a top priority. That means you must schedule time to build your business every single day, no excuses. It should be the next priority after your faith, family and job.
# 8 This Business Isn’t for Everyone!
There, I said it.
Network marketing is not for everyone.
Not everyone is cut out to succeed in sales or owning a business.
If it’s not for you, that’s fine.
It doesn’t mean you are a failure or quitter.
Solution: Before you decide to throw in the towel and quit for good, make sure that you HONESTLY gave it your best and you gave yourself a fair chance to succeed. Until you’ve been in the business at least two years and shown at least 100 people the plan, I believe you have not given it a fair chance.
My Tip for You
Evaluate yourself in each one of these areas and figure out what is really holding you back from success.
Come up with a simple game plan to help you overcome each obstacle.
Talk to your sponsor or upline and get some suggestions from them about what you could do.
