Top 20 Darnell Self Lessons from the 2015 MLM Mastermind Event

In today’s post I want to share some lessons I learned during Darnell Self’s speech at the 2015 MLM Mastermind Event.  These are not quotes.  They are simply things I wrote down during his speech.  Darnell was one of my favorite speakers at the event.  He was very passionate and energetic and fun to listen to.  He has so much knowledge about our great industry.

Darnell Self is a top earner in Legal Shield.  I am not affiliated with him or Legal Shield in any way.  Each lesson is in bold and italics.  I also share my two cents after each lesson.  Enjoy.

# 1 You want a customer driven business. All businesses need customers.  There should be at least 10 customers for every distributor on your team.  If you don’t have customers you don’t have a real business.

# 2 Be a sponge. Surround yourself with mentors and learn everything you can from them.  Have an open mind and do more listening than talking. Learn everything you can about your company, the products, entrepreneurship, network marketing and leadership.

# 3 When you build a culture your team will grow without you.  A strong culture will keep people in the business and help them move along, with or without your help.  You don’t want your team to rely on you.  You want a system dependent business, not a people dependent business.

# 4 Recognize the activities you want people to do. Rather than just focusing on results, focus on rewarding people for doing activities to build their business.  Recognize people for going to events, working on their personal development, setting appointments, giving presentations and helping team members.  People will do more of what you recognize.  Keep in mind that 95% or more of your team is part-time.  If you only recognize the top producers you are making a big mistake.

# 5 You make more money by listening than by talking. You have two ears and one mouth for a reason.  Use them in that proportion.   The best leaders are great listeners.

# 6 Not everyone is motivated by the same thing. Everyone is wired differently.  Some people are motivated by money. Others are motivated by recognition.  Some people just want to help others.  Find out how each person on your team is motivated and then recognize each person in a way that works for them.

# 7 Recognize a small win as a big win. Success is built in a series of steps.  Anytime any one on your team does ANYTHING to move their business forward, find a way to recognize it.  Celebrate every success, regardless of how big it is.

# 8 The only reason the people make big money is because they help other people make money. The more people you help the more money you make.  That is the beauty of this industry.

# 9 Recognize new people more than top earners.  Few companies or teams do this, but I think it is sage advice.  Make the new person feel special and there is a good chance they will stick around and build a business.  New people are the lifeblood of your business.

# 10 You can’t worry about what other people say if you’re going to lead a team. If you don’t have haters you aren’t doing much with your life.

# 11 You can’t be successful with just one toe in. Draw a line in the sand and commit to your network marketing business.  You can’t be half in and expect to accomplish much.  You have to be all in to build it big.

# 12 People just need someone with confidence to follow.  Be the leader that other people want to follow.  Have  a strong vision for your business and don’t let anything stop you.  Become that person and people will follow you.

# 13 Something happens inside of you when you make the decision. Once you burn your bridges and commit to building it big, good things will happen in your network marketing business.

# 14 Be authentic and transparent.  Be honest, sincere and genuine with people.  Treat everyone with respect.  Never use hype, lies or pressure.

# 15 Not everybody will be with you in the end.  Not everyone will stick around or build it big.  Some folks will stay with you for a few months.  Others will stick around for a few years.  You will never keep your entire team.  People come and go for a variety of reasons.

# 16 Some people slow down because they want to bring others. You can’t drag anyone across the finish line.  You can only inspire people by your own actions.  When you stop to help people, your business dies a slow death.  What you want to do is work with the people who deserve your time.

# 17 Always stay out front.  Lead by example at all times.  Never ask your team to do something you aren’t willing to do yourself.

# 18 Keep leading, regardless of what others do.  Never stop being the leader, EVER.

# 19 People will do what you do. If you’re lucky, people will do half of what you do.  Make sure you set a good example for your team at all times.

# 20 Don’t wait for your people to grow a big business. At the end of the day, you have to stay in the trenches and find your leaders.  If you sit around and wait for others to catch up, your business will die.

I have always been drawn to Darnell Self’s wise words. He always seems to have something to say that is relevant to an issue or situation I am dealing with at the time. Many of the quotes you listed here Chuck, are great, and I should right them down and examine them at least once per week. Some of the quotes that are “hitting me now” are:

#5. Listening is such a key component, but many of us just keep running our mouths and closing our ears.

#16. Slowing down to drag someone else will only harm both us and the person we slowed down for.

and #17. Staying in the front is much better than being the tail.

    Thanks for sharing.

I also wanted to mention that I completely agree with the be a sponge part, but unlike a sponge that picks up everything, we need to be the sponge that lets go of the junk. Sometimes we can be such a sponge that we latch on to negative attitudes and other junk that can have an adverse affect on our network marketing business. We need to know what to let soak in and what to discard. Just my 2 cents.

Being a sponge is a must in life, but certainly if you want to be in the MLM industry. You want to take in all the information you can so you can learn and be better. This is where the important lesson of surrounding yourself with the right people comes in. If you do surround yourself with those wiser and farther along in the industry, then you are bound to grow and mature at a faster rate. However, choosing to spend more time with those who have negative outlooks and less than encouraging things to say is a sure way to set yourself up for failure.
