Timing is Everything in MLM

Today, I want to share a secret tip that will help you achieve MLM Success.

That tip is “timing is everything.”

To really make it big in the network marketing industry, you need to join the right company at the right time.

If you join a good company AFTER it has went through the momentum phase, you’ve really missed the boat.

You can still make it big with the company, but you won’t experience the same level of growth that the early birds got.

Some folks will tell you that the folks who got in early make the big bucks.

That is not totally true.

The people who got in early and worked their ASS off are normally the ones that made the big bucks.

If you get in early and don’t do anything, you won’t be successful.

Joining a network marketing company in the early years of the company does not mean anything other than your TIMING is perfect.

On the other hand, if you join a company AFTER the initial momentum, you won’t get anywhere near the rewards that you COULD have gotten, if you had gotten in early.

Does that make sense?

Let me give you a few historical examples to show you the importance of timing.

Keep in mind that this is just my opinion.

# 1 Amway – If you look at the most successful people in Amway, the Kingpins, you will quickly discover that 80% to 90% or more of them joined Amway in the 1960s or 1970s.

Sure, there are a very select few that joined after that, but most of the ULTRA SUCCESSFUL Diamonds and above joined during the period I mentioned above.

Simply put, they joined the company while Amway was in the momentum and critical growth phase.

Now, there are other successful people in Amway who joined in the 1980s and 1990s.

Many of these folks have built big businesses.

However, if you were to look at the top 100 distributors in Amway, I’d bet that 80% to 90% percent of them joined in the 1960s or 1970s.

Very few of the company’s top earners have joined in the past 10 years.

Could you join Amway today and still make it big?

But it wouldn’t be as easy as it would have been 30 years ago.

# 2 HerbalifeHerbalife started sometime around 1980.

They really hit their critical growth phase in the late 1980s and early to mid 1990s.

Study the most successful Herbalife distributors and you will quickly discover that a large percentage of them joined the company prior to 1995, and most prior to 1990.

I’d bet that close to 85% of the largest distributorships joined prior to 1995.

Are there exceptions to the rule?

But, not many!

These distributors joined when the company was hot.

Yes, it’s still a good opportunity today, but no, it’s not growing as fast as it did during the early to mid 90s.

You could join Herbalife today and still achieve huge success, but it would be harder than it was if you would have joined 20 years ago.

# 3 Nu Skin – This is another successful company that launched in 1984.

If you look at the top Nu Skin earners, I’d bet you discover that close to 80% of them joined prior to 1995.

Once again, there are a few exceptions, but not many.

I think Nu Skin is still a great company, but it’s not as hot as it once was.

timing in mlm

Learn why timing is everything in MLM.

What does all this mean?

It means that if you want to really make it big with a MLM Company, timing is everything!

You have to join the right company at the right time.

If you join a company AFTER it’s gone through it’s major growth phase, the odds are really stacked against you becoming ULTRA successful.

Yes, you can still make it big, but you will have to work much harder than you would have if you joined at the right time.

On a side note, I’m not a big fan of start-ups or ground floor opportunities, either.

Most start-ups fail.

What I suggest is that you look for is a company that is five to ten years old and is starting to catch fire.

Or, look for an older, established company that is starting to get hot!

Final Thoughts

My final thoughts are for you to look at your company objectively.

Evaluate how long it’s been around and what type of growth rate it’s had during the past 10 years.

Look at all the top earners and find out how long they have been with the company.

If no one in the top ranks of your company has joined the company within the past five to ten years, you might have missed the boat.

If you think you’ve missed the boat, you might consider looking at other companies that are in their critical growth phase, or about to hit that phase.

Or, you can just stay with your current company and keep plugging along.

What you do is up to you!

Timing seems to be a big factor here. I mean if you join a team before your time, you will get lost. If you join a team before its time, you may become restless and quit. You need to surround yourself with people who want the same things as you and who grow at the same pace as you. Life and business are a lot alike, like a puzzle. Find the pieces that fit you and make you a bigger, better and bright picture (person).

Joining a company at the right time definitely does help, but you still have to do the work. Just because you get in early doesn’t mean you will make it to the top or be successful.

It is always important to check the trends completely. In some cases, MLMs and even traditional businesses can pick up more momentum if they add more products. It is important to join an MLM at the right time before momentum takes place, but always study if the company is developing new or better products that can get them in another momentum. Great post Chuck.

This is really a great post. You definitely need to join the right company at the right time or you really end up missing the boat. Look at any top earner in any company and you will find they joined the company BEFORE it got to big.

Great post here Chuck. Timing definitely is everything. I’ve missed the boat on a few companies I joined in the past. Yes, I made money with them and achieved success, but if I would have joined the company a year or two earlier, I would have made considerably more.

You say that it is important for a person to join a company at the right time. This means becoming a part of an organization before the momentum phase. How exactly can you ensure that you are joining a company at the right time? What if you are under the impression that you are joining a company at the right time and you turn out to be wrong? How could you overcome this challenge and still succeed within the business?

The quickest way to determine the momentum phase is to study trends. Look at the company’s earnings for the past few years. Look at the growth of the total amount of distributors in the past few years. Look at how many countries the company is expanding into every year. You can never be 100% sure about the perfect time to join a MLM Company, but these are the things that I would look for.

If you join a company at the wrong time you can still achieve success. But it will be that much harder.

You may also want to take a look at top earners. If there are some who have done well with a company and are now leaving, I dare say you probably do not want to join that company. That can work in the opposite too. If you know of a “hotshot” who left a company and joined a different one, you may want to join that same one. It is kind of like insider trading of MLM.

I believe circumstance is really what makes or breaks a company in terms of MLM success. It boils down to timing, seeing an opportunity and snatching it in the end, but before that so many things have to go just right for that one opportune moment to arise. Keep your eyes open.

While timing is certainly a key ingredient for MLM success, it is not the only ingredient. I hesitate to attribute the MLM success, or success in any business venture for that matter, purely to circumstance without qualifying the discussion. For one thing, I don’t want to discourage anyone from seriously considering signing on with an MLM or starting their own small business because they believe they missed the boat on the “next best thing.” Factors such as creativity, consistent hard work, and savvy marketing strategies, coupled with some cutting edge skills and the right mindset, are key ingredients as well, and can often offset starting outside the initial momentum phase. One of my favorite quotes is “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Having said that, the reality is that the average person seeking MLM success may not be strong in these characteristics, and timing will, indeed, be a major player.

You are right, Amy. I just have to chime in that it is much easier to achieve success if you join the right company at the right time. If two people do the same amount of work, the exact same things, but one was with an established company and was one was with a company in its momentum growth phase, they would get two wildly different results.
