Today, I want to share the truth about your MLM Upline and Sponsor as I see it. This information will be eye opening to some of you. Good!
I believe that everyone in our industry needs to know this information, so they can have an “ah-ha” moment and move forward with their business. So, I’ll take the chance to piss a few people off, if in return I can empower others.
Here’s what you need to know about your upline and sponsor:
1. It’s not their job to make you successful. There, I said it. I can’t tell you how many people contact me every day and say “I’m struggling in my business because my sponsor won’t help me.” To that I respond BULL SHIT.
Saying this is nothing more than playing a victim. And I’ve never met a successful victim. It does help to have a good sponsor, and your sponsor SHOULD help you, but ultimately it’s YOUR business. Only YOU can make yourself successful. That is no one else’s responsibility.
Your upline is not your babysitter, employer, boss or parent. They should be your coach and cheerleader, but it’s not their responsibility to get your business off the ground or help you make money.
A good sponsor WILL do those things with you, but don’t expect them to. They have their own business to worry about.
Remember this, you get paid to have a DOWNLINE, not an UPLINE.
Having a crappy sponsor is actually a blessing in disguise because it forces you to step up into the leadership role right from day one. Having a sponsor who holds your hand and does everything for you is the kiss of death, because you become dependent on them.
2. They probably use a different system than they teach you. Ouch! Systems are the buzzword in our industry. Many uplines will try to tell you that their way is the ONLY way to build a successful network marketing business. My answer to that is BALONEY!
There are a million ways to skin a cat (sorry cats) and a million ways to build a successful network marketing business.
Each one of us is different, with different talents and abilities. Ultimately, you need to find a way to build your business in a way that works for you. Does that make sense?
Look at any top 10 reps in one company and you will quickly discover that they ALL built the business differently from each other. Guess what? That’s okay.
Study any top earner and you will quickly discover she built the business differently from her successful upline and her key leaders built it differently from her!
Most companies have a UNIFIED training system. They want all of their top reps teaching ONE system, even if none of them use it themselves. This is a common reality in our industry.
3. There’s a LOT they won’t tell you. No, your sponsor or upline won’t lie to you. They shouldn’t anyway.
But, there are a lot of things they WON’T tell you. Very seldom will they tell you about the attrition, how many people you need to sponsor to be successful, how few people actually get serious about the business, what the reorder rates are, etc.
As I see it, this is vital information to know. Most people are taught NO NEGATIVE downline. Some people might think these things I just discussed are negative, but as I see it, they are things that every rep should know about, right from day one.
Wouldn’t you rather know this information UPFRONT, rather than find out on your own, three to twelve months later? I believe the truth will set you free. Personally, I would respect someone who told me the GOOD and BAD, so I could be informed.
4. They expect you to quit. More than 90% of the people who get started in our industry, QUIT! And most do that within the first 90 days.
Your upline knows there is a HIGH likelihood you will be part of that 90%. A smart upline leader will try to taproot you and build depth under you as quickly as possible. This gives you something to lose and gives them something to gain.
I’m not saying this is bad. It’s actually a smart business move on your upline’s part AND it helps your business at the same time.
A smart upline really wants your CONTACTS. They know that you are probably not the champion they are looking for, but someone you know is a champion.
5. Your upline or sponsor is not your friend. I’ll probably get some hate mail for writing this, but just hear me out for a minute. Your upline and you are BUSINESS ASSOCIATES, NOT FRIENDS.
There is nothing wrong with that either. Just realize that your upline is spending time with you because you are part of the business (as a rep or customer). I can almost assure you that if you stop ordering or drop out of the business, you won’t hear from them again!
This does not make them a bad person. This is simply a business and the two of you have a business relationship. Just don’t confuse being a business associate with someone and being their friend.
If your relationship is based solely on your participation in the business, that is a business relationship, not a friendship.
Once again, this is not a bad thing. Just don’t confuse the two things.
There you have it folks. This is the truth about your MLM Upline and Sponsor, as I see it.
I don’t think any of these things are negative. I just think they are good to know information for every distributor in our industry.
