The Truth about Time Freedom in Network Marketing: My Thoughts

Network marketing is a great industry.  In fact, it’s one of the few industries I can think of that has the POTENTIAL to give someone time freedom.  That being said, there is a lot of confusion about time freedom and network marketing.  I hope to clarify that in this post so you can have realistic expectations and a better understanding.

# 1 Most People Never Get Time Freedom

Making it to the top in any profession is a big challenge.  They call it the top one percent or top three percent for a reason.  It’s hard to become mega-successful in any endeavor.  In most professions, when you do make it to the top, you have to work even longer hours.  I don’t know anyone outside of network marketing that has time freedom (other than retirees).

In addition, most people in our industry never make the big bucks or attain time freedom.  Yes, it is possible.  But no, it is not a reality for most people.  I know plenty of folks in our industry who own their life, work their business a few hours each week, and get paid well.  But it’s not the norm.  And they busted their tails for YEARS to get to that point.

It’s not normal in ANY profession.

# 2 You Will Work Your Ass Off to Get There

This is where most people mess up.  People think they can join our industry, sit back, and be rich their first month.  Really?  Name one legal job, business or profession that works like that?  The truth is if you want to be successful in something you have to work your ass off.  If you want something most people don’t have you must be willing to do things that most people aren’t willing to do.

Most people who have time freedom in our industry worked liked dogs for five to ten years to get to that point.  They don’t always tell you that, but it’s the truth.  You will probably never attain time freedom if you are just working your business one to two hours each day.

Success is typically disguised as hard work!

# 3 You Don’t Have to Be a Millionaire to Have Time Freedom

Depending upon where you live, and the cost of living, many people can have time freedom with just $3k to $5k per month.  In other words, you don’t have to be a MLM Millionaire to have time freedom.  If you can stay out of debt, live below your means, and live in a place where the cost of living isn’t sky high (like I do), you can live well and be free.  It’s not about how much you make in our profession that will determine your time freedom, it’s about how much your expenses are and how much of your income you keep.

This is the most important lesson on this page.  Live frugally.  Stay out of debt.  Be a good steward of your money and I honestly believe you could create time freedom and financial freedom in less than five years via network marketing.

# 4 Many Top Earners Still Work Hard and Long Hours

Many top earners in our industry work sixty to one hundred hour weeks, even after they’ve made millions.  Some do this because they have to. Other folks love what they do and don’t see it as work.  Some reps haven’t created systems so their business depends 100% on them and they must stay busy to keep their team moving and growing.  I also know plenty of people who see our industry as a labor of love and enjoy putting in long hours.

Regardless of how much money you make or what rank you achieve, you will ALWAYS have to do SOMETHING to maintain your network marketing business, even if it’s just a few hours per week.

# 5 You Will Live Your Life Out of Balance for a While

Any time you start a new business you are going to have to put in a tremendous amount of work on the front end.  Typically, the first three to five years in a business, of any kind, you put in a ton of work, and don’t always see a huge return on your time investment.  Don’t believe me?  Just ask any entrepreneur!  When it comes to network marketing, you’re going to have to work really, really hard for a few years. If you have a job, you’re going to have to come home and work your MLM Business 20 to 40 hours per week, every week, for a few years, so you can get your business to a point that you are making a good income and your team is growing each month.

# 6 We Don’t Get Paid by the Hour

Real entrepreneurs work on commission; they do not get paid by the hour.  This is NOT a job or W-2 income.  This might just be the one thing that most new network marketers struggle with.  They work hard for a day, or a week, or a month, or a year, and make little, if any money, and then they think they are scammed.  Most entrepreneurs I know made NOTHING (ZERO) their first couple years in business.  That is the whole premise of being an entrepreneur.  You must pay your dues.  Remember, you are building an ASSET that pays you income, not trading hours for dollars.  If you can’t handle merit based pay, you shouldn’t be in this profession or any type of business or sales job.

Time Freedom in Network Marketing# 7 What Are Your Options?

As I see it, there is nothing wrong with a job or a traditional business; however, neither will ever give you time freedom.  Most employees can’t sell their job and when they stop working they stop getting paid.  Most entrepreneurs are a slave to their business and can’t even take a day off.  I don’t personally know of any other industry that even offers time freedom.  Do you?  Yes, there is no guarantee that you will achieve it if you join our industry, but the fact that it is even an option is pretty appealing to me.

Final Thoughts

Once again, time freedom is a misunderstood topic in our industry.  I hope you will study each point on this list so you have a better understanding of it.

  1. Ms Westerman made a point that I also feel as a freelancer. Many people think we have time on our hands; that we can just drop our work at a moments notice and do something else. I believe time freedom can be a huge ploy. As a matter of fact, if people are using the time freedom approach in prospecting others, please stop. To truly grow a strong business, you will have to work your ass off. It isn’t work one day and take 3 days off; for many of us, we have to try and get 2 days fit into one day. I have found myself working 16 hours on some days.

Thanks for being blunt about time freedom.

  2. This is one fallacy I encounter as a freelancer! People don’t understand what we do all day. I do love the freedom and flexibility to be available when and how I choose, but if I’m not working my tail off on my “not free” days, I really feel it.
