Today, I’d like to talk to you about the Phase 1 Activities in your MLM Business. This is a simple concept I learned from some successful ACN reps (no, I am not in that company and never have been).
Phase 1 Activities are activities that grow your MLM Business. They include:
- Prospecting & Lead Generation
- Signing Up New Reps
- Launching New Reps
- Promoting Events
These are the activities you must focus on if you want to grow your business and work smart. Focus on these activities instead of doing busy work, such as cleaning your office, watching YouTube videos, surfing Facebook, or organizing your leads.
The Phase I Activities in Your MLM Business
In the paragraphs below, I will cover each of the Phase I activities in your MLM Business in greater detail.
# 1: Prospecting & Lead Generation
This is the one activity most reps struggle with. It is vital that you start your business right, by making a list of names of at least 1,000 people you know. Yes, you know that many people, and probably much more than that. If I paid you $100 for each name you could think of, you would EASILY come up with 1,000 names.
As you begin to share your business opportunity and products with others, keep adding new names to your list. There is no point to venture into your cold market UNTIL you have gone through everyone on your name’s list.
Why? It’s easier to recruit and retail with people you know. Plus, doing so gives you some experience on scripts and overcoming objections.
Once you’ve gone through your name’s list, pick one or two lead generation strategies that make sense to you and focus on those exclusively. Even better, help your team members reach out to their warm market. If you do that, you will never run out of people to talk with.

# 2: Presenting
This activity is easy to do. I am not a fan of doing your own presentations. Instead, use a third-party tool such as a video, webinar, or conference call to explain the business and products for you. This removes you from the equation and keeps things simple. I personally use a YouTube video to share my business opportunity with my prospects.
The beauty of leveraging technology is you can work smart. Driving all over town to meet up with people takes a lot of time and coordinating. When you leverage technology, you can share 5x to 10x more presentations in the same amount of time.
If you do your own business presentations, one of two things will happen. The first option is you will mess up the presentation and look unprofessional. As a result, your prospect won’t join. The second option, which is even worse, is you will be so good at giving presentations that your prospects think they could NEVER do what you do. As a result, they don’t join. However, when you share a video or third-party tool with others, you keep things simple! This is what you want to happen.
# 3: Signing Up New Reps
If you are prospecting lots of people and keeping your pipeline full, you should be recruiting 2-5 new reps every month. A good goal to aim for is to recruit one new business builder per week. If you are talking with 10 new prospects per day, this is more than doable, even for a part-timer.
# 4: Retailing
In addition to recruiting new reps, it’s important to retail your company’s products and services. Keep in mind, it’s not one or the other. You need to retail and recruit. Do both. Make it your goal to find and maintain two to ten retail customers. This helps keep your business profitable.
Imagine how much your bonus check would grow if everyone on your team serviced two to ten customers each month! Do it. Teach it.
Customers are important. Are you focused only on finding new distributors for your network marketing business? You should also focus on finding new customers. Your customers are your best prospects for conversion to a distributor at a later date. Think about this: if your customer loves the products and starts sharing their passion about it with others, the next step for your customer is to start their business to earn from sharing the information!
# 5: Launching New Reps
Signing up new reps is not enough. If you just sign people up and do nothing else with them, you are wasting your time and money, because you will have a revolving door in your business. Instead, you must launch your new reps correctly.
Your # 1 goal when signing up a new rep is to help them sign up a new rep, and a few customers within their first 24 to 72-hours in the business. This is known as taprooting.
Your objective is to tap into your new rep’s warm market as quickly as possible. Help them do a business launch meeting, either in person or on a conference call, and recruit some of the people they know. This will help them get a check. It was also help “lock” them into the business.
# 6: Promoting Events
We are an event driven business. You should attend every team and company event yourself and promote the events to your team. The more people you have attending events the more your business will grow and the more your bonus check will grow.
Events are where people make the decision to commit to their business. Events help build belief and give your new reps “social proof” the business works.
Millionaires don’t attend events just for the training.
Most of them already know the stuff that is being taught but they are wise enough to know that the REAL value is in the networking.
There is no better way to meet and pick the brains of successful people than to attend a live MLM event.
I had low self confidence and lacked the belief in MLM to be successful but fortunately I attended my first event and had a major breakthrough.
Since then, I’ve made an effort to attend every live event possible.
Managing Your Time
If you are working your business 10-hours per week, you should spend at least nine of those ten hours on one or more of these Phase 1 Activities in your MLM Business. This will let you work smart and get good results.
What most people do is focus on the “easy things” in their business, such as surfing the back office, commenting on Facebook, and getting ready to get ready. As a result, nothing happens in their business!
I’ll also share one additional tip.
If you can’t build the business part-time, you’ll never make it full-time! Having more time to work your business is not the answer. Instead, you must learn to work smart with the time that you do have! That is the key to success!
Why Your Business Plateaus & Stop Growing
If your business is growing slowly or has plateaued, it’s probably because you stopped focusing on the Phase 1 Activities in your MLM Business. Instead, you went into management mode or started “coasting” in your business.
If you want to rank up, or recreate momentum, it is vital that you focus on the Phase 1 Activities in your MLM Business. Keep doing the things you did to make your business grow the first time around. That is the secret to success.
In conclusion, these are my thoughts on the Phase 1 Activities in your MLM Business. None of these things are rocket science. These things are easy to do and easy not to do. Only you can decide if you will pay the price and do them.
Most people don’t do the Phase 1 Activities consistently, over a sustained duration of time, and that’s why they struggle with their business. Don’t let this happen to you.
