As a young child my mother taught me the Golden Rule. That rule was to “treat everyone the way you want to be treated.” As I have grown up and matured, I believe there is an even better definition of the Golden Rule. It should say: “treat everyone the way that THEY want to be treated.”
When it comes to network marketing, I believe in the Golden Rule. I call it the MLM Golden Rule. I define it as treating everyone you talk to with respect, whether they join your team, buy your product or do nothing at all. Treat everyone as well as you would treat your own parents, child, or best friend. When you do that you can’t go wrong.
Some network marketers really mess this up. Some distributors are actually taught that they should ignore or “blackball” people who are un-supportive, negative or have no desire to join their team. Some people are even taught to avoid their own family members and close friends if they choose not to get involved in the business. Some people are taught that people who don’t join their team are “losers” or have “no vision for their lives.”
And then we wonder why so many people have a bad taste in their mouth about network marketing! When you treat people this badly, it’s no wonder they dislike you and what you do (our profession).
I learned a long time ago that good news travels fast and bad news travels even faster. When you treat someone well, they might tell a few people. Yet, when you treat someone badly they will tell everyone they know.
Assuming this is true, and I believe it is, we should all treat everyone we talk to with respect. Value people’s differences. Value that everyone thinks differently from each other and has different values, personalities, goals and styles than you do. If we were all the same, how much fun would the world really be?
Starting today, put a smile on your face and treat everyone you talk to as well as you would treat your own best friend. Be positive and uplifting. Never lie, deceive or cheat someone. Never use hype or pressure. Never bug, chase or annoy people. Do what you say and say what you do. Always do the right thing, even when no one is watching.
Be a network marketing professional. Take pride in what you do. Be a sterling example for others and you will attract the right people into your business. Treat everyone with respect. Have posture. Treat others the way that they want to be treated.
And remember this. If you treat people well a few things will happen:
- A no today might become a yes later on down the road
- Worst case, people will be neutral to what you do
- Some people will give you referrals
- Some people will buy some products just because they like you
Follow the MLM Golden Rule and you will be well on your way to success. Violate the rule and you will get frustrated, stay broke and probably quit.
