The Major Problems with Building Your MLM Business Online

Most network marketers are OBSESSED with building their MLM Business online. I don’t deny that.  Most network marketers don’t want to talk to people or get rejected face to face, so they think they can turn to the internet to avoid that, and build a huge business without talking to anyone.

While the internet is a powerful marketing medium, it is not necessarily the solution to your challenges.  Ultimately, network marketing is a relationship business.  And the only way to REALLY connect with someone is to talk to them face to face or on the phone.

As I see it, there are five major problems with building your MLM Business online.  These problems don’t mean that you can’t build a successful business online. Instead, it just means that it won’t be as easy as you think.

# 1 Steep Competition

Let’s face it, there is some steep competition online. Search for any company, product or network marketing term online and you will find millions of results in the search engines and you will see hundreds (maybe thousands) of people competing in each category.  It can be really difficult to stand out in the crowd and get noticed.  It can take lots of time and money to stand out in the crowd.  Online you have to compete with Amazon and eBay selling your products, plus the smart marketers who have the experience and deep pockets to win the SEO and paid advertising war.

# 2 Big Learning Curve

It took me about 36 months FULL-TIME to figure out online marketing.  For most people, it will take YEARS to figure out online marketing.  And for every person who can figure it out, many can’t.  And for every person who wants to figure it out, there are MANY people on your team who have no desire to do so.  At a minimum, it takes most people a year or two and THOUSANDS of dollars to figure out online network marketing.  While you are focusing all your time on online marketing, you probably won’t be doing much to grow your network marketing business.

# 3 Expensive

Like I just said, it can be very expensive building your MLM Business online.  Setting up a website, getting coaching, spending money on marketing, and all the other costs can add up quick.

# 4 Impersonal

The internet is very impersonal.  You see, few people will ever do business with, or become a customer of someone they do not know, like and trust.  You can have the best websites and landing pages in the world, but people still want to “connect” with other people before they do business with them.  You can’t hide behind a website and expect something huge to happen.

# 5 Not Duplicatable

This is the big one.  You see, even if you are one of the lucky few who figure out online marketing, you will quickly discover that it is not duplicatable with your team.  Even if it works for you, it won’t work for most people on your team.  And in MLM, it’s what duplicates that matters most.  If your team can’t do it, the strategy isn’t very good.

Final Thoughts

I believe the internet is NOT the solution to your network marketing challenges.  For every successful distributor who built their business online, I’d bet there are at least 100 top earners who did not.

If you are scared to talk to people, the internet is not the solution.  If you don’t understand marketing, the internet is not your solution.  If your team isn’t duplicating, the internet is not your solution.   You are the solution.

Old School MLM is still the proven, tested way of building a successful business.  Never forget that.

  1. The MLM model has been around for decades and has been very lucrative for the companies and the distributors. The reason is it offered a setting different from just going into a store. It was about building personal relationships with people. Making them feel a part of something. That doesn’t translate as well online.
