I’d like to take a few minutes and teach you how to start your own blog.
I get calls every day about my blog. People want to know how to start a blog of their own, if they need one, what it entails, why they should create one, how to come up with ideas to write about, how to get started, how long it takes to succeed, etc.
I figured I’d create a simple page on my website to give you all the information you need in one place, so you can make an informed decision about blogging. I’ll start out by answering some of the most common questions people ask me about blogging, and then share tips about how to start your own blog.
What is a Blog?
In the internet world, there are blogs and websites. The major difference between a blog and a website is that a blog gets updated frequently (sometimes several times per day) and is organized like a diary, but in reverse chronological order. A website is more static and doesn’t normally get updated that often. There are stand alone blogs and websites that have blogs as part of their website.
Do You Need a Blog?
It depends. I believe every serious network marketer who wants to make a career out of the industry should have an online presence, be it a blog, social media account, capture page or website. My preference is a blog, but it isn’t the best option for everyone.
Pros and Cons of Blogging
Like anything else in life, there are pros and cons with blogging. The major benefits are that you can generate leads 24/7. You can position yourself as an expert, so people reach out to you first. You can develop multiple streams of income within your business. On the flip side of the coin, the major downside of blogging is that it can be very time consuming and it can take several YEARS to build up an online presence.
Is It Expensive?
Blogging is very inexpensive. This is what I love most about it. When you are just starting out, you can set up everything for approximately $100 per year. This includes the cost of a custom theme, hosting and your domain.
How Long Does It Take to Succeed Blogging?
You probably don’t want hear the truth, but I’ll tell you anyway. Blogging is a long-term project. It can take YEARS to build up a following and gain momentum and make money blogging. I think it’s worth it, if you can stick with it for ten or more years. Most people give up way to soon, normally in their first six months. If you’re blogging once per day, I think three years is a realistic time frame for success. If you’re blogging less than that, it will probably take you five to seven years minimum, to build up a large following. This blog is currently 4+ years old and it took two years doing it full-time to make any headway.
How Can I Grow My MLM Business with a Blog?
The real purpose of a blog is to do two things. You want to build up the like, know and trust factor with people you don’t know. Also, you want to generate leads. Basically, you position yourself as an expert in a specific subject and get people to like you and trust you. A percentage of these people will reach out to you, or subscribe to your newsletter, to learn more about you, your products, and your business. If you’re blogging to build your business it’s VITALLY IMPORTANT that you keep doing other prospecting methods while your blog gets built up.
How to Start Your Own Blog
Listed below are my 8 steps to start your own blog.
Step # 1: Determine Your Niche and USP
Simply put, what will your blog be about? What is the theme? What makes your blog different from everyone else’s blog? Which target market, or group of people, are you trying to reach?
This is easily the most overlooked step in creating a blog, yet also the most important step. To give you an example, my target market is other network marketers and my unique selling proposition (what makes me different) is that I am the No B.S. Network Marketer.
I highly suggest you pick a blog geared around your company’s product line or service. For example, if your network marketing company sells electricity, you could make a blog about the deregulation of the energy industry. Make sense?
Step # 2: Brainstorm Domain Names
You want a catchy domain that ends with a dot com. You want it to be three words or less, easy to remember, with no dashes or hyphens in it.
You can use your own name for your domain, but I really suggest you do something different. For instance, I chose “onlinemlmcommunity” because I wanted to create an online community for network marketers, and I wanted a website that I could eventually sell one day. If you use your own domain as the domain, not many folks would want to buy it!
The best thing you can do is brainstorm 20 or 30 potential domain names. Once you’ve done that, rank your top ten choices from one to ten. Make sure they aren’t trademarked names and then check to see if any of them are available for purchase.
Many good domain names have been taken, but you can still find some good ones if you think outside the box.
Step # 3: Buy a Domain and Hosting
The next step in the process is to buy your domain and hosting. A domain should cost you about $10 per year and hosting should cost you about $40 to $50 per year. I recommend a company called SiteGround. They have great prices, an easy to use interface and great customer service. Learn more here.
Step # 4: Install WordPress
The next step is to install WordPress onto your SiteGround hosting account. This is free to do. It only takes about five to ten minutes to set up. There are instructions in your back office, or you can do a search on YouTube for a tutorial video.
Step # 5: Buy a Custom Theme
Once you install WordPress on your hosting account, the next step is to buy a custom theme. You can also choose from one of the free themes, but I highly suggest something custom, so it looks professional. Once you purchase a custom theme, you will upload it into WordPress.
Step # 6: Set Up Your Pages and Layout
Next, you need to set up your pages and website layout. This would include your about me page, contact page, privacy page, welcome page, etc. on your blog.
Step # 7: Set Up Your Auto-Responder
The next to last step is to purchase and set up your auto-responder. This will allow you to build your email list and put a popover and opt-in box on your website. I use and recommend Aweber.
Step # 8: Start Publishing Content
The final step is to start publishing content on your blog. Content is king. I suggest posting daily, or minimum five times a week. You can outsource this if you don’t want to do it yourself. The best thing to do is to create a posting schedule and stick to it.
