I recently read the book The New Entrepreneurs: Making a Living – Making a Life through Network Marketing by Rene Reid Yarnell. I loved it. This is an older book, first published in 1999 by Quantum Leap Publishing.
I learned about Rene from Mark Yarnell, her ex-husband. Mark was one of my most respected mentors in the industry (he passed away a few years ago), so I figured I would check out this book as well. I was not disappointed. In fact, I REALLY enjoyed the book.
Although the book is almost 20-years old now, the information is still relevant. It’s loaded with great tips and wisdom from a woman who has been there and done that. Rene had a great career in network marketing and she is a proven leader.
I have tremendous respect for her as well, even though I have never met her personally. What I want to do in the paragraphs below is share a few of my favorite Rene Reid Yarnell quotes from the book.
Top Rene Reid Yarnell Quotes
Each quote is in bold and italics. After each quote I will share my own two cents on the quote. Enjoy.
# 1: I hunt elephants… I look for big people who want big results and have big dreams but don’t want to work for peanuts.
This is a great line to use with your prospects. If they are open minded and looking for something better, this will definitely get their attention.
# 2: As I look back, I can see that I went through a three-step process. First, I put my faith in God, believing that what I was doing was right and good. Secondly, I was totally and completely committed to the industry. Third, I went to work armed with the belief that I would have the success I envisioned. Prosperity didn’t come easily or immediately, but it did finally present itself overwhelmingly.
Believe in what you are doing and put in the work UNTIL you become successful.
# 3: Network Marketing calls upon us to lead by example, celebrate the victories together, and offer support to each other when those times of discouragement set in.
Always lead from the front and set a good example for your team. Celebrate your own successes and your team’s successes. When you get down, go upline. And when you are up, go downline.
# 4: I work closely with leaders who are creating a team. The team is everything. If you have a good team you can accomplish any milestone. An individual can lead a charge, but without the team that individual’s effort is meaningless.
Spend your time where it is deserved. Work with your leaders and serious people. I’d rather run with one than pull twenty.
# 5: People buy what they want, not what they need.
People make emotional decisions and then justify it with logic.
# 6: If you treat your MLM business as a business, it will respond like a business. If you deal with it like a hobby, it will grow accordingly.
You get out what you put in. Businesses make money. Hobbies cost money.
# 7: Sometimes it is when your back is against the wall that you discover your real strength.
When things go bad, that is when your true character is revealed.
# 8: Our mission is to get a whole lot of people to do a small amount of sales volume.
This business is about having a lot of people do a little bit each, rather than having a few people do a lot.
# 9: In the early stages, for the labor put forth, we are paid very little. It is at this stage that most people quit.
In just about any new business, you might work for one to three years before you see your first penny of profit.
# 10: What you do others will duplicate.
Keep things so simple a caveman could do it (sorry cavemen!).
# 11: To the degree that I improve myself, I will be a magnet for leaders to be attracted to me.
The law of attraction is always working. We attract what we are, not what we want. To attract better quality people you must improve yourself.
# 12: The most painful thing to experience in life is not defeat, but regret.
It’s better to attempt something great and fail than attempt to do nothing and succeed.
# 13: My philosophy is centered around the value I place on my first level distributors. They are the real assets of my business.
Support your team. Be there to help them.
# 14: By association, every distributor who fails, hurts us as an industry and collectively indicts us all as scam artists.
Make sure that everyone on your team has a good experience, even if they don’t make money or stay with it.
# 15: People fail in business not because success isn’t possible, but because they can’t picture themselves achieving prosperity through that particular medium.
Your beliefs can help you or hurt you. Most people sell themselves short.
# 16: The business is 80 percent why and 20 percent how. If you can find a strong enough why with your distributors, they become self-motivated; they can do the business for themselves and they’ll have a reason to find out how. If you don’t dig down inside a person and find out their reason to get up in the morning, and their reason to pick up that telephone, they’re simply not going to succeed at this business.
Until you know WHY, the HOW doesn’t matter.
# 17: An apprenticeship is a part of every business and ours is no different.
It will take you a few years to develop the right MLM skills. It takes time. You must be the student before you can be the teacher.
# 18: Attrition has always been high in our industry. Out of the 200,000 Americans joining a network marketing company every month, more than 85 percent of them quit within their first 90 days. That is because network marketing is a business that demands effort. In the early stages, it is some of the hardest work most of us have ever done, and the return for our effort is very small. Most people don’t have the patience to persist long enough for success to take hold.
All good things take time. Most people are short-sighted and can’t see past their next paycheck.
# 19: Training and duplication are the essence of building a large, dynamic network organization.
This is not a recruiting business. It’s about helping people and building teams. It’s about sponsoring and teaching others.
# 20: We weren’t looking for someone who was a self-starter, who was entrepreneurial. And if you sell a non-self starter into the business, as soon as you leave them alone, they will fall apart.
Sponsor up. Look for people at your level of motivation and higher.
# 21: Bill found that is was far easier to build an organization with those who had already developed their leadership skills in other careers. Those who have contacts, credibility, a good work ethic, and bring those qualities to their network marketing business, are the people who go right to the top.
Look for quality prospects. Quality people lead you to quality people.
# 22: If you get with the right company and the right time, you don’t have to worry about singles and doubles. You can hit a home run.
Timing is important in this great industry. You must choose the right company at the right time.
# 23: People in their 40s and up are perfect for this type of an industry because they know people and are respected in the workplace. After all, their credibility is their strongest asset.
People are never too old to do the business. People who are older than you have more contacts and wisdom.
# 24 :Remember, it takes years to build up trust and only a few seconds to destroy it.
Always do the right thing. ALWAYS.
# 25: You can hire 100 superstar sales people and motivate each of them to sell $10,000 worth of product each month. Or, you can have 10,000 network distributors sell $100 each month. They both equal a million dollars in sales.
Network marketing is about a lot of people doing a little bit.
# 26: The companies that are product focused are the ones that last over time.
If the products don’t make sense neither will the business opportunity.
# 27: You must first believe in the value of your product before you can ask others to invest in it.
If you don’t believe in yourself, and what you are offering to others, you won’t do well selling it.
