Recruiting Up In Your MLM Business

Today, we’re going to talk about recruiting up in your MLM business.

Before we begin, let me tell you that your ultimate goal is to find and develop leaders. That’s how you grow a large network marketing business.

In most cases, you only need to personally recruit one to five good leaders to make a tremendous income in network marketing.

Rather than focus on recruiting LEADERS, most people in our industry do the complete opposite. Instead of recruiting success minded, entrepreneurial, and influential people, most distributors look for people they are comfortable approaching. These folks are normally at their level on the economic food chain, or lower.

This is a big mistake as I see it. I want to explain why and also offer a solution to this common problem.

The Number Scale

First off, I believe there is a grading scale that goes from one to ten. Every prospect and every distributor fits somewhere on this scale between those two numbers.

A one would be someone who is lazy, with a bad attitude, no sphere of influence or contacts, no credibility, and no money. They are the type of person who would probably NOT get involved in the industry, and if they did they wouldn’t do anything.

A ten, on the other hand, is someone who is already really successful in life, is highly motivated, has a great attitude, has credibility, has contacts, is respected by the people who know them, and is entrepreneurial by nature.

To clarify, just because someone is a one does not mean they are not a good person. I’m just using  a number to describe whether or not they are a QUALITY PROSPECT for the business.

The Problem

Most distributors look for people to sponsor who are at their level of motivation or below. They do this because they feel comfortable talking to these people.

For example, someone who is a five on the scale will try to recruit someone who is a three because they feel comfortable approaching them. They sponsor the three and help them get trained and get started.

Next, the person who is a three approaches someone who is a two. They get them started and trained in the business.

Now the person who is a two goes out and sponsors a one. They get their new person signed up and trained.

By the time this cycle repeats itself a few times you end up having a HUGE organization of lazy, unmotivated people who take up your time and do very little to move their business forward.

Can you relate? I can. If you are the most motivated person on your team, you will fail.

Your ultimate goal is to have hundreds, even thousands of people on your team, at your level of motivation and higher, who are all actively recruiting people above their level of motivation and success!

That is the ONLY way to grow a big team that produces and continues to grow on its own.

The Solution

By all means, talk to everyone you can about the business opportunity and products. However, keep your eyes and ears open for sharp people.

Instead of trying to recruit someone who needs the business, focus on finding successful people who WANT a plan B or exit plan from what they are currently doing.

Look for people with a big burning desire to change their life! Look for people who are already successful in life, who have credibility, resources, disposable income and contacts. These will be your best prospects.

What’s Your Number & How to Improve It

We all have a number. When I first joined this industry back in 2002, I was a two or three on the scale. I was self-motivated, but I had a bad attitude, no people skills, low self-esteem, no contacts or influence, and countless other issues.

Now some sixteen years later, I would rate myself as a 9.5.

I’m confident. People respect me. I am successful. I have resources, credibility and contacts. I’m a leader and doer.

I’m not saying this to brag. I have worked VERY hard to improve my number and become a better quality prospect and distributor.

We can increase our own number by developing our skills and mindset.

The only way to do that is to work on your personal development.

  1. Read daily.
  2. Attend events.
  3. Find a mentor.
  4. Enroll in automobile university.
  5. Learn something new every day.
  6. Work on yourself and never stop.

As you get experience, improve your skills and improve your attitude, your number will go up!

The Law of Attraction

Remember this:

A stud will NOT partner up with a DUD.

If you want to attract quality people to your business you must become a quality person in the eyes of your prospects. We attract what we are, not what we want!

To attract better quality prospects you must increase your value.

People don’t join businesses. Instead, they join people. Be someone worth joining!

Be the type of person you want to sponsor and be the type of sponsor you wish you had.

Final Thoughts

In summary, recruiting up is the smartest and most efficient way to build your network marketing business. Always look for sharp, bright, self-motivated people with contacts, credibility and resources. It’s much better to recruit one or two high quality people than to recruit hundreds of followers.

    I believe the biggest reason most network marketers fail to sponsor up is their fear of talking with someone who seemingly has better success in life. While success is not necessarily a measurement of the amount of education, money made or material possessions, people tend to be scared to approach these people that have more.

    We need to break these fears!

    We all put our pants on the same way, and usually they will listen to you just as readily as they will a person in their field. We just have to be willing to talk with them.

    I suggest that for the start, you find someone you fear talking with and “get over it.” Just go for it and see how easy it is. You will probably be pleasantly surprised.

    • Yes, most people fear approaching someone more successful than themselves. I’m not sure why. It just seems to be human nature.
