The No B.S. Time Management for Entrepreneurs: The Ultimate No Hold Barred Kick Butt Take No Prisoners Guide to Productivity and Sanity by Dan Kennedy is a must read for any serious entrepreneur who wants to excel with time management. I can truly say that this book had a major impact on how I spend time growing and running my business.
I’ve read most of Dan’s books at least three times, if not more. Dan’s training has helped me more in my business than anyone else I have studied, and I’ve never even met him in real life! Dan is pretty much the God Father of direct response marketing. He has personally mentored most of the best marketers in the world.
Even though this book isn’t specifically about marketing, he did a great job with it. After all, can you name one entrepreneur who isn’t busy? I can’t speak for you, but every business owner I know of is working at the max and would love to have more time for their family and personal life. How about you?
I picked up a copy of this book about two years ago, while redeeming an Amazon® gift certificate that I got for my birthday. When it arrived, about a week later, I devoured this book in one setting. In fact, I couldn’t put the book down. I had so many “ah ha” moments. My personal copy has tons of underlined passages.
What I like most about the book is that it is a time management guide for entrepreneurs. If you don’t own a business, or have no desire to do so, this book will be of little value to you. But if you are an entrepreneur, this is the book for you.
In the book, Dan Kennedy discusses a variety of topics to include:
- How to turn time into wealth
- Why most meetings are a waste of time
- Time management techniques
- How to replace yourself and make more money
- How to be more productive in less time
- How to eliminate distractions
- And so much more!
This book is a fast read, but it is absolutely loaded with helpful tidbits. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the book. Each quote is in bold and italics. After each quote I will share my own two cents on the subject.
Quotes from No B.S. Time Management
# 1 I make a lot of money each day just by not commuting. Most entrepreneurs spend at least an hour a day commuting (round trip). If you multiple that by five days a week for 50 weeks a year, that is 250 hours per year of wasted time. By working from home you could save yourself that time and be more productive.
# 2 Leadership is not about outworking everybody. You have to learn how to work smart. Yes, there are times when you have to put in long hours to make deadlines and get stuff done, but at the end of the day you need to be smart about how you spend your time in your business. Time management is a top skill of successful entrepreneurs. Anyone can work hard and put in long hours, but being productive is something totally different.
# 3 Good enough is good enough. There is no such thing as perfection. If you are a perfectionist, you need to get over it. It’s better to get something done today than take a week so you can make it perfect.
# 4 Marketing is the highest paid profession and most valuable part of a business. The entrepreneur’s real job is MARKETING the product or service that their business offers. The guys and gals who master marketing are the ones who make the cash register ring and live a good life. Once again, your products are not your business. Marketing your products is your real business.
# 5 Most salespeople are much too product – and process-oriented – not sufficiently prospect oriented. Say less to more people. In most cases, you do not need to be a product expert to be successful with your business. Instead, you need to be a people expert. Work on your people skills and always keep your pipeline full.
# 6 But there’s not a soul on the planet who gets in eight productive hours a day. Most people, regardless of how many hours per day they work end up wasting a lot of time on non-productive stuff. I encourage you to track your productivity for a day and see how much time you waste. It will surprise you.
# 7 If they can’t find you they can’t interrupt you. Sometimes you need to turn off your phone, shut down Facebook, and lock your office door so you can focus and get things done. Do that for even an hour or two a day and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish.
# 8 Most people will suck up about as much time as you let them. Folks will waste your time if you let them. Keep your conversations short and on point. Try to do most correspondence by email since it is quicker and more efficient than talking on the phone. Keep phone calls to a minimum.
I’m a pretty focused guy, but even I struggle with time management in my business from time to time. After all, we only have so much time in a day and we have so much to get done. I suggest you start every day with a prioritized to do list AND you schedule your day by the hour. Plan out your work. Work your plan. Stay on point and don’t get sidetracked. Turn off your cell phone if necessary. Only check emails twice per day.
Come up with a time management system that works for you and follow it. Take control of your time! Learn how to do that so you can be more productive and more efficient in your life and in your business.
