This post is pretty special to me. Not only am I excited about the topic, but this is my 1,000th blog post! In today’s post I want to talk to you about network marketing as a career.
I think network marketing is a great career choice for just about anyone, even if they just intend on doing the business part-time for the next 20-50 years. Yes, you can have a part-time career.
There are many people, in many different network marketing companies, who have spent DECADES with their company, earning a nice part-time or full-time income through the years. In fact, most top earners in our industry have been with the same company at least 10-20 years.
I knew from the first time I saw the “plan” back in 2002 that I was going to do this business model the rest of my life. I thought I was going to stay with my first company forever, but that didn’t work out. Regardless, I’m still here and still building my dynasty almost thirteen years later.
Why Network Marketing as a Career
Some of you might be wondering WHY someone should you make network marketing as a career. Here are some of the major benefits as I see it.
# 1 Great Personal Development – I can’t think of any other industry in the world where you will get as much personal development and personal growth as you will with this industry. This truly is a personal development business disguised as network marketing.
# 2 Amazing Friendships – My best friends are other network marketers. There are so many amazing people in this great industry. You will build friendships that will last a lifetime. This will include people on your team, people in your company, and even people in other companies. Most people who stay in our industry for decades are positive, enthusiastic, self-motivated, and want more out of life.
# 3 Help Others – This industry truly is about helping other people. The only way to make it to the top in your company is to help other people become successful. You can help everyone pursue their goals, whether big or small. You can help people stretch out of their comfort zone, overcome their fears and grow as individuals. Helping other people change their life for the better is fun to do.
# 4 Free Training and Support – We are one of the only industries in the world that I know of that offers free training and free support. You get a free coach, normally several coaches in your upline who want to help you succeed. You learn tons of great skills that you can use in MLM and in any other career you might have. In most industries, when you train someone they become your competition. Not so in network marketing.
# 5 Part-Time or Full-Time – You can do this business part-time or full-time your entire working career. I really like the part-time aspect. Very few other business models (or careers) offer you the opportunity for a “part-time” career. Most are simply just a part-time income. Best of all, you can start the business part-time while you keep your day job.
# 6 Unlimited Earning Potential – This business truly does offer unlimited earnings potential. I’m not saying you will make unlimited money, but the opportunity to make a boat load of money is available, if that is what you want. Many people are happy earning a few hundred, even a few thousand dollars per month. But if you want to make millions you can.
# 7 Leverage – We are one of the only careers that I know of where you can have leverage without money or employees. It’s like a dream come true, especially if you’ve ever owned a traditional business before. You can earn small commissions off hundreds, even thousands of people’s efforts. How powerful is that?
# 8 Work from Anywhere in the World – Another great thing about network marketing as a career is that you can work from anywhere in the world. As long as you have a phone and internet connection you can work your business. You don’t have territories and you aren’t set to any one location. You can also build an international business.
# 9 Very Low Monthly Overhead – Our industry lets you have a very small monthly overhead. Other than your auto-shipment, you shouldn’t have many more expenses. Most businesses have a huge ongoing overhead.
# 10 No Employees – You won’t need to manage others. You won’t have people reporting to you and you won’t be anyone’s boss. It’s like a dream come true.
# 11 No Risk – You won’t have much of a capital investment, normally less than $300. MLM is here to stay. It’s not like starting a traditional business where you have hundreds of thousands of dollars invested just to get started.
# 12 Residual Income – Maybe the best thing about network marketing as a career is that you have residual income. Very few industries offer you the ability to earn residual income. This is money that comes in month after month, regardless of your efforts. In addition, your business is an asset that produces cash flow and also has an equity value.
Am I saying the network marketing industry is perfect? Of course not. But I do believe that if you stick with it for the long haul, and build it big, there is no other business model that can give you the leverage, the residual income, the lifestyle, and the time freedom that our industry offers.
I’m not saying everyone will be successful. Most won’t. Most people in any career don’t make it to the top. Then again you don’t have to make it to the top to earn a nice long-term income.
An Important Decision
Quite perhaps the most important decision you have to make when doing network marketing as a career is to pick a company that will be around for the long haul. Most companies in our industry come and go. Very few companies are positioned for long-term success. Choosing a company that will still be around in another 30 or 40 years is vitally important if you want to build a big, long-term business. See my post on how to find the right MLM Company.
The Four Year Career®
One of my favorite books is “The Four Year Career®” by Richard Bliss Brooke. The book teaches people how you can compress your entire career into four years of focused, intense effort. Basically, he claims that we are the only career where you can work really, really hard for four years and earn financial independence. I have to agree with him. I personally can’t name one other career where you can work really hard for four years and build up a large enough residual income that you can retire or become financially independent.
Drawbacks of Network Marketing as a Career
Contrary to what you believe, making a career out of network marketing is NOT going to work for everyone. You have to have vision, focus, commitment and a strong work ethic to make it. You have to be mentally tough and stick with your initial decision, even after the enthusiasm is gone. You need an entrepreneurial spirit and a bit of patience.
To make it to the top in network marketing will be the hardest thing you have ever done in your entire life, but it will also be the most rewarding.
There you have it folks. As I see it, network marketing is a great career choice for someone with the entrepreneurial spirit who doesn’t want to go the corporate employee route and doesn’t want to start a traditional business of their own. It’s not a perfect industry, but it is a great fit for some folks. I hope you will be someone who decides to make network marketing a career, just like I did.
