In this mini-series, I’m covering seven key lessons I learned from network marketing legend Mark Yarnell. Today’s lesson is to “finish what you start.” It’s amazing how many people in our society are quitters. People quit marriages, gym memberships, diets and even quit most New Year’s resolutions in less than ONE WEEK. Think about that for a moment.
If people quit these things, why would you expect them to stick around in network marketing for any period of time? The truth is, close to 50% to 80% of the people who join your network marketing business today won’t be around in your team 12 months from now. And there’s really very little you can do about it. Most people simply do not have the intestinal fortitude to follow through with their decisions, once the initial excitement wanes. Therefore, don’t take it personal when they quit the business.
My hope today is that YOU will realize the importance of following through with your decision to build it big AFTER the initial enthusiasm fades. Let’s face it, just about anything can be fun an exciting for a few weeks or for a few months. It’s easy to get excited about residual income and/or owning your own business. But once the initial hype wears off you will quickly discover that it takes a lot of hard work, perseverance, and commitment to build a successful network marketing business. It also takes a certain skill-set and mind-set.
Heck, it’s hard to do anything worthwhile in life. It’s hard to accomplish anything on a grand scale. Success is never easy, free or fast. In addition, habits are HARD to change. Quitting is a habit. And the only way to kick the “quitting” habit is to form new habits. That means you need to learn how to make a decision and stick with it until it is finished.
Study any successful person in our industry and you will see it probably took them YEARS to succeed. Heck, study any successful person in ANY industry and you will discover it took them many, many years to make it big.
You might think of them as an overnight success story, but they aren’t. There is always a story behind the story. Study an successful athlete or entrepreneur and you will see that they have developed their craft over a period of YEARS, sometimes even DECADES. They didn’t start out great. They became great because they stuck with it and they worked on their craft every single day UNTIL they achieved success.
Hopefully, you can follow Mark Yarnell’s advice and finish what you start. My hope is that you will make a decision to succeed in network marketing NO MATTER WHAT. Make the decision that failing or quitting is NOT an option. Get rid of your exit plan and start thinking like a winner.
You must have to vision to know what you want to accomplish in your network marketing business and you must have the FAITH, COMMITMENT, WORK ETHIC, and PERSISTENCE to do the work UNTIL you succeed. Things will get tough. You will face setbacks and challenges, but you have to keep pressing forward. In the beginning, you will see a very small return on your time investment, but as you keep pressing forward, your business will take on a life of its own (individual results will vary).
Success in network marketing is like anything else in life. If you get started and make a commitment to keep pressing forward, AND DO THE WORK, you will eventually succeed. Of course, you will need to make some adjustments along the way as you develop your skills and mindset. But that applies to anything in life. Start living by the “I can, I will, I shall” motto. Get rid of the stinking thinking and stop being a quitter. Finish what you start! That’s what winners do!
