Today, I want to share the single best MLM nugget of all time.
I think so anyway.
Unfortunately, I cannot take full credit for this idea myself.
I wish I could, but I can’t.
I’ve heard it many times before by many people, although most people say it differently.
I read a book last month titled “Network Marketing: The View from Venus.”
It’s by Carrie Dickie, a very successful rep in the industry.
The book is a must read for anyone who wants to take their business to the next level.
In her book, she shared some advice.
I’m going to quote it blow, so I don’t mess it up, and then I will share my insights on it.
Network marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme. In any country, in any language, in any business, anything worth having is worth working for. Network marketing is no different. If they tell you “Just enroll and we’ll build it,” they are pulling your leg. Unless you are serious about building a part-time, full-time or big-time business in network marketing, just be a customer and use the products. Some of the very finest products on the planet are moved through person-to-person distribution. No matter what anyone says, you cannot build a business in your spare time. It just will not pay you. Network marketing is like real estate, mortgage brokerage, or insurance, because you must make a reasonable investment of time to see any sustainable results. ~ Carrie Dickie
What does all this mean to me?
As I see it, it means that you must be serious and committed to your business, if you want to build a successful business and make money. It means that your business must be a top priority in your life if you want to succeed. You get out what you put in.
If I was going to put this MLM Nugget into one sentence, I would say this:
This is the best business in the world if you treat it like a business and the worst business in the world if you treat it like a hobby.
To me, this is epic advice.
You can build your business working part-time.
You can build your business working full-time.
But, you can’t do it in your spare time.
You can’t do it when time permits.
You must MAKE TIME for your business, and preferably every single day, if you want to succeed.
As I see it, people expect a lot more out of their network marketing business than they are willing to put in it.
Most people treat it like an unimportant hobby, yet they expect to make a full-time income.
I understand a select few work incredibly hard and still fail, but that is not the norm.
Let me just give you a few examples to get you thinking.
- How long would you keep your day job if you just showed up one or two hours a week? And how much money would you make if you did that?
- Do you think you could graduate college if you only took the courses you wanted and only showed up for classes when you felt like it?
- Do you think you could stay healthy if you only ate healthy and exercised once a week?
- Do you think you could build a long-term, happy relationship with someone if you only work on your relationship a tiny bit here and there?
The answer is HELL NO.
That’s the truth.
And in just about any of these examples, you would probably agree with me.
When people enter this industry they think the complete opposite.
They expect to have the money pouring in within the first few weeks, or first few months, even if they have done NOTHING to grow their business.
These folks drive me crazy.
This way of thinking drives me crazy.
Folks, this ain’t the lottery.
No business works like the lottery.
It’s not a matter of luck or chance.
It takes hard work done CONSISTENTLY over a period of YEARS to succeed in ANYTHING.
I know that deep down you already know that.
My hope is that you will give your team members realistic expectations.
Help them create a five to ten YEAR plan for their business.
My goal for you is that you will treat it like a business if you want it to be a business.
And if you just want to treat it like a hobby, that’s cool. Just don’t expect it to pay you like a business if you do that.
