MLM Motivation: How to Stay Motivated

Today, I want to talk about MLM Motivation and share some things with you that you need to do to stay motivated about your network marketing business.  I should begin by telling you that I truly believe that motivation comes from within. I believe that you are either self-motivated or you aren’t.

I also realize that some people can motivate other people temporarily, but for the other person to stay motivated it is a personal choice.  For example, your boss can motivate you to do your job by threatening to fire you.  Your sponsor or upline can temporarily motivate you by giving you a pep speech, putting someone on your team for you, or by having you attend an event.

When any of these things happen, you might be motivated temporarily, but that motivation will fade.  For you to stay motivated and continue to work, it’s up to you!

On the other side of the coin, I realize that most people who have jobs aren’t motivated to wake up early, fight traffic, and go to work every day, but they do it anyway.  So, you don’t have to be motivated to do something (although it does help).  Many people also do things out of habit or necessity.

What happens to most people in our industry is they come home from a long day at work in their job, they eat dinner with their family, crack open a beer, and then sit down on the couch and watch television.  Before they know it, three or four hours have passed by and it’s time for bed!  Can you relate to that?

If you want more motivation in your MLM Business, I can offer you some helpful tips.

First and foremost, you need to clearly define your WHY.  You need to spend some time and think about WHY you joined the business to begin with.  What motivates you?  What are you most passionate about?  What are you ultimately trying to accomplish?  I truly believe that if you have a big enough why, you will stay motivated day in and day out.  You need a why that sets your world on fire.

Another tip about motivation is something I learned in the book “The Magic of Thinking Big.”  If you haven’t read that book yet, order a copy today and READ IT.  In the book Dr. David Schwarz mentions that “action cures fear.”  He gives the advice to people to “let your actions control your emotions rather than letting your emotions control your actions” (paraphrased).

This really is million dollar advice if you take the time to think about it.  I’ve found from personal experience that when I am feeling tired, down, sad or depressed, I do very little to move my business forward.  However, once I take action my belief goes up, my motivation skyrockets, and I become happy because I am working toward my goals.

I truly believe that if you do something to build your network marketing business every single day you will automatically stay motivated.   It’s hard not to.  However, if you let your fears, poor work ethic or bad results keep you down, there’s a good a good chance that you will never build your business.

Just remember, the best way to stay motivated is to get off your butt and do something.  Spend 30-60 minutes minimum on your business every single day.  Focus on the money producing activities.  Take action.  Realize that motivation comes from within.  Rather than letting your feelings control your actions and motivation, let your actions control your feelings and motivation.

I think self-motivation is a must in any business but especially in MLM. I have little goals that I set for my self each day, week and month. I play a little game with myself and if I win I give myself a prize. I think you’re right about working on it everyday for at least an hour. However, this is really a part-time job you will want to put in a minimum of 15 hours a week. I also find that it helps to keep your Why before you, vision boards, daily affirmations, and daily meditation are great ways to keep yourself motivated.

Working an hour a day is a good starting point. Working even when you are not motivated is probably the most important thing. Just stay committed no matter what.

As I really looked over this great post again, a realization came to me. We, as people often look to outside sources to motivate us. I even commented that way by seeking other people or music, etc… The best way to get motivation is from deep inside our own beings. look in the mirror, and as Chuck said, answer the why question. Why am I doing this. Why do I want to succeed. Just by answering all the why questions, we can gain a lot of motivation.

        I love that outlook Chuck.

It is so true. Motivation will not always be there. Commitment can always be there, Knowing your responsibilities, and that it will only lead to good things will keep us doing what we need to. I have found that on days when I wake up highly unmotivated, if I just fight through the desire just to cover my head and keep sleeping, I usually have great days. It is like a negative force trying to keep us from having a good day.

You are right…commitment is the most important.

Yes, commitment definitely trumps motivation. I am not very motivated today, but I’m still doing the work to build my business because I am committed. That’s the attitude people need to have.

I have found in my later years that if I feel demotivated, I just get up and start doing what I need to do. You hit on it Chuck. One of the best ways to get motivated is to start doing what you know needs to get done. Sometimes it helps to examine a recent accomplishment. By seeing something you did yourself, you will gain motivation. I also find certain music and songs can help motivate, along with certain books, and even people. Call someone you know provides motivation.

Great tips on motivation sir. Now I am motivated to go write another book!

      Greg,

There are definitely times when you have to just get up and get moving. Sometimes we sit around too long and that inaction allows us to focus on negative things and mistakes we have made or fears we may have. But just making the decision to stop sitting and start doing is the best way to get the motivation train rolling again. Once you see the good that comes from making one step you will want to make another and then another.

I have a habit of posting up my future company goals in places I will see them regularly in order to help keep myself motivated. If I am able to stay focused on the goals and where I see myself in the future, I am easily able to overcome any of the distractions and disappointments that may arise. I also like to do research about other individuals within the MLM industry who have faced and overcome struggles. It reminds me that I am not alone in some of the challenges I face and that if I am persistent I can move beyond the current discouragement I face.
