These are real world lessons I have learned from mentors and through trial and error during the past 20-years in this amazing industry.
Keep in mind this business is ultimately a leadership business. Customers and distributors come and go like the common cold, but leaders are the ones responsible for the big growth and long-term income. To attract leaders to your team, you must first BECOME a leader yourself. Don’t worry. There’s hope. No one is born a leader, but anyone can DECIDE to become a leader. It’s your choice!

# 1: Keep Learning
The best MLM Leaders work harder on themselves than they do in their business. This is a business of personal development with a compensation plan attached to it.
Your business will only grow as much as you do. Spend minimum fifteen to thirty minutes daily on your personal development. Read books, listen to your mentor, and attend events.
Never stop learning. Never think you’ve arrived! Strive to be better tomorrow than you were today. Repeat that process daily until the day you die!
# 2: Lead by Example
Always lead by example and do the things you want your team to do. That’s what the top earners and best network marketing leaders do.
Never ask your team to work harder than you do. Be the type of sponsor you wish you had and be the type of person you want to sponsor. Your team is constantly watching you, so set the bar high! In fact, set the bar so high that even if they do 10 percent of what you do, you will be thrilled.
One of the first major steps to branding yourself in multi-level marketing is to be consistent and accountable. In an industry built on trust and relationships, it is important to follow through with something when you say you are going to do it. You want people to see you as someone who is committed to their business. Being branded as a reliable partner is crucial for getting new people to join a team. Many network marketers make it a point to attend all company trainings, participate in conference calls and invite new team members to join them for each of these activities. They often share their personal goals with others to reinforce the importance in achieving them. Being known as a disciplined go-getter earns respect from people who are considering joining your independent team.
# 3: Encourage Your Team to Learn & Grow
Encourage personal development in your team. MLM Leaders promote and encourage personal development to EVERYONE on their team. One of the best things you can do to help your team is to encourage each person you work with to become the best version of themselves possible. Develop a team reading program. Get people to attend events. Get people to set goals and improve their skills. The payoff will be HUGE!
# 4: Follow a System
If you want to be a better MLM Leader, you must use and teach a system. Have a simple system for your team members to follow. Great MLM Leaders follow a proven, simple system. They have a system for their team to leverage. They know the average person needs step-by-step instructions because they have never done this type of business before.
MLM is a business of duplication. Those who’ve already been successful will share their secrets to success, and all you need to do is listen and then do what they tell you. Unfortunately, I wasn’t very coachable in the beginning. I was successful in traditional business and figured I could do the same things and be successful in network marketing. Boy, was I wrong! Because I didn’t listen to my upline leaders, I didn’t make any money at first. Successful MLMers have been there, done that–and have the paycheck to prove it–so be coachable, and duplicate their success.
# 5: Be Plugged in with Your Successful Upline
One of the most important MLM Leadership Qualities is to be COACHABLE. Be coachable and plugged in with your plugged in upline. Smart leaders are plugged in with their plugged in upline leader. They do this to learn new skills, to have someone to mastermind with, and to show their team that they are doing the things they want them to do.
# 6: Practice Edification
Use edification whenever possible. Edification is the secret sauce in this business. Edify others whenever possible. Don’t speak badly of your upline, crossline, downline, or other companies in our industry. If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

# 7: Treat Everyone Well
Amazing MLM Leaders treat EVERYONE well. Treat the “little guy” as well as you do the “top earners.” Without the “little guy” there are no top earners. Be nice to people regardless of what they do or don’t do with the business.
# 8: Find Ways to Recognize People
One of the most important MLM Leadership Qualities is PRAISE. Recognize people, even for the smallest of things. People crave recognition. This is quite perhaps the easiest thing you can do to improve the production in your team and to be a better MLM leader (and person). Have lots of little contests. Send out gifts and awards. Recognize people publicly whenever possible.
I do a rank change in celebration and recognition for my team members. I also call out over the weekend, those who performed well during the week. I recognize their efforts. I use their pictures for a team member shout-out. This makes them feel good and important. Everyone loves being celebrated and recognized. So I take the time to do so for my team.
# 9: Stay Humble
Keep your ego in check. Never let your success go to your head and never let failure go to your heart. Never act as if you are “better” than someone else. Learn from everyone you talk with. Do more listening than talking. Do more listening than talking.
Humility and maturity are synonymous. A dignified person accomplishes much, but brags little. They are secure in their standing without needing to make noise, often treating everyone with tremendous respect, regardless of position.
# 10: Don’t Badmouth Others
Never badmouth others or other companies. It just makes you look bad. If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all! This is another important MLM Leadership Quality.
# 11: Focus on ONE Company
Stick with one company. Do not promote multiple deals. It makes you look bad. It confuses your team. Focus on one opportunity for the long haul. Plant your flag somewhere and ride it out for the long-term, through the good and bad. Successful MLM Leaders are 100 percent committed to one company!
# 12: Attend All Events
Never miss an event. Be the first one to buy a ticket for upcoming events. After you do that, promote these events to your team members. We are an event driven business. The more people you have attending events the more your business will grow. Successful MLM Reps are MASTERS at promoting events!
One key to running a successful network marketing business is ongoing education. You may have great success with a sales strategy, but it doesn’t mean the strategy will always work. You need to keep learning.

Teach SKILLS whenever possible. Yes, motivating your team is also important, but it won’t help much if they don’t have the basic skills they need to succeed. The best MLM Leaders are great teachers.
# 14: Never Use Hype & Pressure
Never use hype or pressure. Remove these two words from your vocabulary. It’s okay to be excited, but keep it contained. Hard selling makes you look bad. Hype makes you look like a sleezy salesperson. Pressure annoys people and gives our entire industry a bad name. Always be a professional.
This is the mistake that you want to avoid at all cost. Never lie about the products or services that you are providing to your prospective clients. Make sure that you are not misleading them in any way when you talk to them about your products or services.

# 15: No Negative Downline
Positive up, negative down. When you are down and frustrated go upline. When you are happy and upbeat, go downline. Never share your problems or frustrations with your team members. Why? They already have their own problems they are worried about. Casting your negativity onto them only hurts them.
# 16: Have Weekly Meetings
Do a weekly conference call or webinar for your team. Get your team together at least once a week. This is powerful and effective. Keep your meetings to an hour or less. Do some recognition, product training, and business training. Start and end on time. Have an agenda and follow it.
One of the most valuable results you can get from a meeting is feedback on how to improve for next time. Having pre-established goals allows you to measure how successful your meeting was in achieving what you set out to get done. You should also keep track of who was at the meeting so that you can follow up individually with participants. A meeting is a sales pitch, and some participants might need additional time to commit to closing the deal. If you don’t make subsequent contacts, you might miss out on people who were almost ready to commit at the meeting, but needed to mull it over.
# 17: Be a Servant Leader
People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Focus on helping others get what they want. Take your eyes off yourself. Put others needs first. As you do that, your business will grow. Plus, you will sleep well at night knowing you treat others well.
The best MLM Leaders realize their power and position is an opportunity to serve others! They work for their people, rather than thinking they should be worshipped or held high on a pedestal.
# 18: Improve Your Skills Daily
MLM Leaders work on your leadership skills every single day by reading books, listening to tapes, attending seminars, attending masterminds and spending time with other leaders. The more skills you develop the more value you bring to the marketplace. In order to attract other leaders into your business, you must first become a leader yourself. Remember, skills pay the bills.

You will hear the word NO five to ten times more than you will hear the word YES from your prospects. Leaders in our industry maintain 2-5 retail customers each month and teach their team to do the same thing. You don’t need to service tons of personal customers, but you do need a few. After all, you can’t teach what you can’t do yourself!

Your job is to help your people get what they want. Never assume your prospects, team members, or customers want the exact same thing that you do. In the beginning of your network marketing business, it will just be you doing all of the work. For most people, it will take at least six to twelve months to find their first leader. Each person who joins you is an independent business owner and is responsible for his or her own business. If you plan on managing thousands of people you will have a big problem. There is no profession that exists that allows someone to succeed without training. Real estate agents, doctors, lawyers, nurses—They all go to school! Well, enroll in network marketing school for two to three years and see what happens! Treat it like a business; it will pay you like a business.
On the same token, if you just wanna chill and have fun; it will pay you like a hobby. That’s fine too! We all must prioritize according to what works best in our own lives. But we cannot be disappointed when we don’t get paid for work we didn’t do.
