Welcome to my MLM Compliance Training. As a quick disclaimer, I am NOT a lawyer. This training is for educational purposes only.

I’ve created this MLM Compliance Training because I see so many crazy things in our industry. During the past 21+ years as a distributor, it often it feels like the blind are leading the blind. My hope is that EVERY rep in EVERY company will read and study this MLM Compliance Training and then evaluate how they share their products and income opportunity with others.

While the “compliance” and “rules” vary from company to company, I want to share a general OVERVIEW training. This will probably be a 95% solution, regardless of what company you promote.

MLM Compliance Training

I wish every network marketing company required a two or three hour compliance training for their reps. This would help reduce, even eliminate, a lot of the crazy things you see in our industry, such as income claims, product claims, false advertising, etc.

My goal today is to pay it forward and help fill that gap. What you see below are some valuable lessons I’ve learned from mentors, training, and real world experience during the past 21 years in the industry.

# 1: READ Your Company’s Policies & Procedures

Reading and understanding a company’s terms and policies within the MLM space is crucial for reps to ensure compliance while building their business. These documents outline the rules, guidelines, and ethical standards that govern their operations, guiding reps on acceptable practices and boundaries.

Understanding these policies helps reps navigate the dos and don’ts, ensuring they conduct their business ethically and legally. It also prevents unintentional violations that could lead to penalties or even termination from the company.

Moreover, a clear grasp of these guidelines empowers reps to make informed decisions, protecting both their own reputation and the integrity of the company they represent. It’s a proactive step toward maintaining trust with customers, fellow reps, and the broader community while fostering a sustainable and compliant business.

# 2: Do Not Share Your Income Publicly

MLM representatives should refrain from publicly sharing their income for several reasons. Firstly, disclosing earnings might mislead others about the potential success or feasibility of the business, as income in MLMs can vary significantly based on various factors like individual effort, market conditions, and timing.

Secondly, it can lead to unrealistic expectations among potential recruits who might join solely based on the income figures without fully understanding the complexities and uncertainties of the business model. Additionally, public income claims can create undue pressure or competition among existing members and may even violate company policies or regulations regarding income disclosure.

Ultimately, maintaining privacy around earnings allows for a more realistic and ethical representation of the MLM opportunity, fostering a focus on product quality, personal growth, and genuine entrepreneurial spirit.

# 3: Don’t Use the Words Diagnose, Treat, Cure, or Prevent When Talking About Your Products

MLM representatives should approach product claims with caution and refrain from making exaggerated or unverified assertions. Promoting products with unrealistic claims can not only mislead potential customers but also damage the reputation of both the representative and the company they represent.

Without concrete evidence or scientific backing, making bold claims about product efficacy or health benefits can undermine trust and credibility. Moreover, it might lead to legal repercussions if the claims violate advertising standards or regulations.

It’s crucial for MLM reps to focus on transparent, factual information about their products, highlighting their genuine benefits and features while steering clear of extravagant or unproven assertions. This approach ensures a responsible representation of the products and maintains integrity within the business.

# 4: Never Promote Your Business as an Investment

MLM representatives should exercise caution when framing their business as an investment, as it can create misleading perceptions and unrealistic expectations. Unlike traditional investments that typically involve financial markets or tangible assets, MLM participation requires ongoing personal effort and sales skills rather than passive income generation.

Describing MLM as an investment may attract individuals seeking financial returns without fully grasping the inherent risks and uncertainties associated with network marketing. This misalignment of expectations can lead to disappointment and dissatisfaction among recruits.

To maintain transparency and ethical business practices, MLM reps should focus on promoting the entrepreneurial aspects of the opportunity, emphasizing the need for dedication, hard work, and relationship-building skills rather than positioning it as a traditional investment.

# 5: Do Not Advertise Your Business as a Job

MLM distributors should avoid promoting their business as a conventional job for several reasons. Positioning MLM as a job can create misleading expectations regarding guaranteed income and stability. Unlike traditional employment, success in MLM relies heavily on individual efforts, sales skills, and network building, making it more akin to a business venture than a salaried position.

Additionally, portraying MLM as a job might overlook the entrepreneurial nature of the opportunity, potentially attracting individuals seeking steady employment rather than those willing to invest time, effort, and entrepreneurial spirit into building a business. Emphasizing the entrepreneurial aspects and the potential for personal growth and autonomy within MLM allows for a more accurate representation of the nature of this business model.

# 6: Do Not Mention Your Company’s Name in Your Advertising

Avoiding the mention of your company’s name in paid advertising can be a strategic choice to generate curiosity and engagement. By holding back the company’s identity initially, you create an air of mystery that may prompt potential customers to seek more information.

It can serve as a hook, encouraging individuals to delve deeper into your offerings, leading to increased interaction and engagement with your content. Additionally, omitting the company name in initial advertising allows you to focus on highlighting the unique value proposition and benefits of your products or services, shifting the attention from the brand itself to what it can offer.

# 7: When Discussing the Income Potential, Always Include an Income Disclaimer

Providing prospects with a copy of the company’s income disclaimer is essential for MLM reps when discussing the income opportunity. These disclaimers offer transparent and factual information about the potential earnings within the MLM structure, highlighting the reality of income variability based on factors such as individual effort, market conditions, and time investment.

Equipping prospects with this disclaimer fosters honesty and manages expectations, ensuring that individuals considering the opportunity have a clear understanding of the potential financial outcomes. It establishes trust by presenting a realistic view of the business, steering clear of exaggerated income claims, and aligning prospects’ expectations with the actual experiences of representatives. # 8: Always State You Are an Independent Distributor

Clearly stating that you are an independent distributor when discussing your MLM company online or in advertisements is essential for transparency and integrity. This disclosure provides crucial context to your audience, emphasizing that you are an independent entrepreneur representing the products or services of the MLM company rather than an official spokesperson or employee.

It helps set the right expectations regarding your role, making it clear that your opinions, experiences, and claims are based on your personal involvement with the business. This transparency builds trust with your audience, showcasing your authenticity and honesty in presenting the opportunities and products associated with the company while ensuring ethical and compliant marketing practices.

Compliance is not just about being legally compliant; it’s about doing what’s right. It’s about having integrity in your business operations.
