Today, I’d like to talk to you about working with a local MLM sponsor. I want to discuss the pros and cons, so you know both sides of the coin.
Most people believe that having a local MLM sponsor is an advantage. I disagree 100%. I think it will hurt you more than it will help you. I’ll explain why in a bit.
Here are the advantages and disadvantages as I see it.
Advantages of Having a Local MLM Sponsor
# 1 You have someone locally to help you. When you are just getting started in the business, you’ll probably need a lot of help. Most people need LOTS of hand holding. Since your sponsor is local, you can drive to their house, they can visit you, or you can meet at a third party location whenever you want. Simply put, you will have 24/7 access to them.
# 2 You can get together for events and meetings. There’s a good chance your local sponsor will be able to do home meetings and 1-on-1 meetings for you. Or, you can go with them to their other team member’s meetings. They might even have weekly or monthly meetings in your local area. Having local events you can attend is a GOOD thing.
Disadvantages of Having a Local MLM Sponsor
# 1 Chances are you will become DEPENDENT on your sponsor. In my opinion, this is the # 1 reason I don’t ever want to sponsor people locally. The last thing you want is people dependent on you. You don’t want team members who need you to do everything for them. When you have a local MLM sponsor, it’s easy to step back from the leadership role and let your sponsor do it for you. Why have your own meetings if your sponsor is already doing one?
# 2 They probably don’t know how to build nationally or internationally. In most cases, but not always, a local sponsor will not know how to build nationally or internationally. Sure, they can build locally, and that is better than nothing, but wouldn’t it be better to work with someone who knew how to build locally and long distance? Simply put, someone with a local business can show you how to build locally, whereas someone with a global business can show you how to build globally.
My Two Cents
I believe having a local MLM Sponsor holds most people back in the business. It encourages them to become dependent on their sponsor and not take responsibility for their own business. After all, why should they do everything themselves, when they have someone else who will do everything for them?
If you’re trying to build a successful network marketing business, look for a sponsor who is SUCCESSFUL and COMMITTED, regardless of their proximity to you. Make sure you sponsor shop before you join any company. Who you team up with is just as, if not more important, than the company you join. Food for thought.
There you have it folks. These are my thoughts on having a local MLM sponsor. Having a local MLM sponsor is not a bad thing. Just know the pros and cons and do what is best for you and your business.
