What I would like to do in this post is share some lessons I learned from John Addison during his speech at the recent MLM Mastermind Event in Orlando, Florida (NOV 2015). John is the former CO-CEO of Primerica and he helped take the company public. He was my favorite speaker at the event.
Keep in mind these are not quotes. These are notes that I took during his speech at the event. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Each lesson is in bold and italics. I also provide my own two cents after each lesson.
# 1 Life is fast; you don’t get a do over. You only live once. Make sure you live every day to its fullest.
# 2 You have to fight to live the life that you deserve. Nothing worth accomplishing is fast, free or easy.
# 3 Winning is a matter of choice, not chance. To win in life, you must first make the decision to win. Then you must commit, do the work and follow through until successful.
# 4 Luck is not what leads to winning – it’s hard work. Making it to the top in any profession is hard to do. It requires vision and some personal sacrifice.
# 5 Your business is attracting others. In the network marketing industry our job is to be the type of person who can attract the right kind of person.
# 6 Every action you take attracts or repels people. People are always watching what you do and say. Make sure that you set a good example. Be positive, focused, and committed and you will attract the right people.
# 7 Work hard on yourself. Work harder on yourself than you do in your job.
# 8 The scarcest resource is convicted, passionate leaders who want to help others. Be this type of leader and you will attract plenty of quality people to your team.
# 9 If it sounds too easy, it’s sleazy. Don’t tell your prospect that the business is easy. Let them know that if they want to build it big it will be the hardest thing they ever do, and also the most rewarding.
# 10 Winning is not easy; being broke is easy. Most people follow the simple path and play it safe. That’s why they end up broke. To be a winner, you have to think differently than most people do.
# 11 To win you’ve got to pay the price. Success never goes on sale.
# 12 The first person you have to lead is you. You have to get your own thinking right. People want to follow leaders. That means you need to become a leader if you want to attract a team.
# 13 Don’t wait for your circumstances to make you happy. How you view things will determine your level of happiness. Happiness is a choice. Don’t think that making more money or getting a new car will make you happier. Happiness comes from within.
# 14 Money makes good people better and bad people worse. Money makes you more of what you already are.
# 15 Act the way you want to feel and soon you will feel that way. Let your actions control your emotions rather than letting your emotions control your actions.
# 16 Let go of what makes you negative. Don’t dwell on past mistakes and your shortcomings. Focus on your future and who you want to become.
# 17 Success is a marathon. Success in any endeavor normally happens over a period of decades, not months or years.
# 18 Embrace adversity. Life is full of setbacks, challenges and disappointments. Expect it. Be prepared for it.
# 19 Quitting is a way of life for most people. Most people quit everything they do, from gym memberships to diets to marriage.
# 20 Winners fight for the long haul. You need to take the long-term view on things to be successful.
# 21 If you can see up you can get up. Get up one more time than you are knocked down.
# 22 The greatest honor is to fight for a worthy cause. Do something you are passionate about and believe in.
# 23 Leaders need to be a lighthouse not a weathervane. You must be constant. Don’t let your current situation change who you are. You need to be the rock for your team! When times get tough your true character is revealed.
# 24 Tell people the truth. Always be honest with people. Tell them the truth, not what you think they want to hear.
# 25 I fear failing more than I desire success. I can’t speak for you, but this is how I am wired.
# 26 Avoid negative, cynical people. Surround yourself with encouraging, uplifting people who bring out the best in you. Avoid negative people at all costs.
# 27 Never take advice from anyone more screwed up than you are. Be careful who you listen to. You might end up just like them.
# 28 Titles are temporary. You can’t take it with you! The title doesn’t make the person, it reveals the person.
# 29 Don’t take yourself too seriously; no one else does. Learn how to laugh at yourself, smile more, and have fun.
# 30 We’re all going to die eventually. Life is short. Live every day to its fullest.
# 31 Be the best that you can be. This one is self-explanatory.
# 32 Create an atmosphere for growth. Create an environment for your team where they can learn and grow. Learns something new every day and try to get better every single day.
# 33 If your thinking is stinking your team is shrinking. Be positive, uplifting and encouraging.
# 34 Get up every day and work on you. Try to get better every single day.
# 35 Thoughts are things. We become what we think about. Think positive.
# 36 If you are a whiner your team knows it. You can either make excuses or you can make money.
# 37 You can be a victor or a victim, you choose. I have never met a successful person with a victim mentality.
# 38 Find the people who have the burning desire. You are looking for people who are hungry, who want more out of life.
# 39 Your ultimate success is how many lives you change. The more people you help the more money you make and the happier you will be.
# 40 There’s plenty of room at the top; only the bottom is crowded. If you want to make it to the top you can!
