This is the first lesson in my mini-series about my favorite Tom “Big Al” Schreiter quotes. The lesson is most distributors get good advice but never realize the value or put it to use. This lesson really hits home for me. You see, most distributors are taught WHAT they need to do to build a successful business. They know that success in network marketing comes down to prospecting, showing the plan, following up, training your team and getting customers.
In most cases, they are also taught HOW to do this. I’ll admit, some of the methods are a bit outdated, but they still work. On the other hand, some distributors are lucky to have a successful sponsor or upline that knows several different methods to build a successful business. And even if a new distributor doesn’t have a good upline, there is plenty of FREE information online about how to succeed in MLM.
At the end of the day, knowing HOW to build a successful business and knowing what to do is not enough. Just about every distributor who has quit our industry knows those two things. It’s not until you take the knowledge you have and put it into action that you will succeed in network marketing. Knowledge is the foundation of success. But APPLIED knowledge is what will make you rich in network marketing.
At some point you have to get your butt off the couch and do the work. You have to schedule time to go out prospecting (or to generate leads online). You have to schedule the time to show presentations, follow up, and sign up your new distributors. You have to make the time to train your team. You have to go out and get customers. None of these things will happen by accident! Thinking about your business does not count! The only thing that counts is your actions.
Heck, I’m sure you already realize this stuff. But what are you actually doing about it? What have you ACTUALLY done in the last 30,60 and 90 days to build your business? Are you just thinking about success and financial freedom or are you actually doing something about it? Show me your calendar and I can pretty much tell you how much money you are making in your network marketing business.
My advice to you is to listen to your successful upline and DO what they tell you to do. Humble yourself and don’t act like you have a better way of doing things. Studying the industry, your compensation plan and product line until the cows come home and educating yourself won’t get you anywhere. Yes, you need to invest in your business education, but the best way to learn network marketing (and make more money) is to roll up your sleeves and do what you already know you should be doing. What you learn by trial and error will be 100 times more valuable than what you read in a book.
It won’t be easy. It won’t always be fun. But the reward is well worth the small sacrifice you make. Knowledge is not enough. There are plenty of educated broke people in our industry (and the rest of the world). What really separates the wimps from the weenies is APPLIED knowledge.

Hi. The last two days I have been bit lethargic and was just visualizing my future (but no action). I read this article early in the morning and as soon as I woke up (I accidentally read it) your article lit a strong fire beneath my butt. I just got ready and went to my business work. Thanks. I am new to your website, but I am really enjoying all of your articles.
I have seen this in sales time and time again.
Many of the new salespeople do great at first because they follow the basics. They apply the knowledge they learned word for word. All of a sudden they start trying to cut corners. Sales drop and they wonder why. They actually lie to themselves and pretend they are following the steps.
No matter the organization, be it a MLM or a sales business of any kind, they have found what works. If the distributors will follow that system, they will succeed. It does take work. Success doesn’t just fall in a person’s lap.
Great post. I hope people will read this and realize the knowledge they have gained needs to be applied otherwise it is essentially worthless.
Glad you enjoyed the post. There are lots of educated broke people out there. It’s the people who do the work and apply what they learn that do the best in life.
As an educator by trade I’ve learned that it is all about application of the knowledge, not just the knowledge itself, that will get you somewhere. It makes sense that in the business world that would be especially true. I enjoyed reading this true-life use of applied knowledge and may even share it with my students! I also enjoyed your question, “What have you done in the last…days to build your business?” It takes effort to really build anything, doesn’t it?
