Jim and Nancy Dornan: Journey to Crown in Amway

Today, I’d like to share some notes I took while listen to an old Amway tape by Jim and Nancy Dornan. It’s named Journey to Crown.

As a quick disclaimer upfront, I am in no way affiliated with Amway. What you see below are notes I took from the training. Some of these notes are paraphrased from what I heard. After each lesson, I will share my own insights on it. Enjoy the training.

Jim and Nancy Dornan: Journey to Crown

I’ve listed these lessons and quotes in chronological order. Each lesson is in bold and italics. After that, I share my own two cents.

# 1: We were not looking for a business. We just responded to a phone call.

You never know who will be interested in your products, services, or business opportunity. Give everyone a chance to decide for themselves. And whatever you do, don’t pre-judge people.

# 2: We went to a rally and liked what we saw.

Get your team members to events. Events provide social proof. Events are where people make the decision to build a big business. We are an event driven business.

# 3: We didn’t know anyone and weren’t comfortable talking to people. We are very shy and private people. You don’t need to “love to talk to people” to be successful.

Contrary to what you might think, you don’t have to be a good salesperson to do well in this business. What you do need to have is a genuine interest in others and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone.

# 4: I looked at my boss, and his boss, and his boss and they didn’t have what I wanted.

I can speak from personal experience and tell you this is the exact same reason I left the military and decided to work for myself. Look at your own situation in life. Does your boss, or their boss, or their boss have what you want? Or, are they working more and spending more time away from their family than you do from yours?

# 5: We struggled and scrambled for the first years in the business. Nothing worked well. We were just excited, and we tried many different things.

Everyone who joins our industry is lousy at first. Whenever you start something new you must go through an incubation and learning period. Give yourself time to succeed and don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t know what you are doing when you first get started.

# 6: Everyone we sponsored were people we did not know.

There are more than 7 billion people in the world. While I recommend starting with your warm market first, it’s important to understand that you can build the business with strangers if you choose to.

# 7: Most of our friends and family did not join. And the ones that did quit.

If your warm market is not supportive of you, don’t fret. Invite them to look. If they are not interested, go find some new people to talk with.

# 8: We chose freedom over material things.

If you can get out of debt and live below your means it doesn’t take too much money to buy back your life and have your time freedom.

# 9: If you get good at this business, you will have a lot of money!

While most people fail in network marketing, the ones who do succeed make amazing incomes and have great lifestyles.

Lessons from Amway

# 10: We kept our eyes fixed on the prize and paid the price.

Anything worth accomplishing requires a sacrifice. Always keep your goals in front of you and don’t let the temporary setbacks and struggles derail you from pursuing your goals.

# 11: People are a product of their environment.

Surround yourself with people who uplift you and encourage you and bring out the best in you. Ignore the haters and critics whenever possible.

# 12: Many people let failure paralyze them and keep them from trying again.

You only fail if you quit. Learn something from each temporary failure, make the required adjustments, and press on.

# 13: Set the goal first and then find people who want to be part of it.

Create a compelling vision and share it with everyone you talk with. That is what will attract more people into your business.

# 14: Expectation and momentum are what caused our team to grow and explode.

Expect greatness. Set big goals. And get to work. Once momentum sets in, it’s hard to stop. When you get momentum, double or triple your efforts and ride the wave as long as you can.

# 15: Set your goals in concrete and your plans in sand.

Don’t deviate from your goals but be flexible about how you get there. I’ve found there are many ways to get where you want to be.

# 16: When you are down and frustrated work on your personal development.

Life isn’t always fair or even fun. You will have ups and downs. When you are feeling down, work harder on your personal development. Tough times never last, but tough people do.

# 17: Everyone has a different story. That’s why we like to share stories.

Develop a good product and business story. Your story is your most powerful recruiting tool. Share it whenever you can. Also, use testimonials in your presentations. Facts tell, but stories sell.

# 18: Whenever you do something, expect problems and challenges. Are you going to be part of the solution or part of the problem?

Things never go exactly as planned. Stay flexible. Adapt. Change. The more challenges you solve and the more people you serve, the more money you make.

# 19: Do everything you teach your people to do!

Always lead by example always and inspire people by your own actions.

# 20: It took us six years to sponsor one of our best couples.

Some of your best prospects will tell you NO numerous times before they eventually join your team. Remember that every prospect is a prospect for life. Stay in touch with people forever, but never use pressure or hype.

# 21: Set the expectations for your new people right out the gate.

One of the best things you can do with your new people is set the expectations high. Demand greatness from them. Let them know what is possible in the business if they really commit and put in the work. Let them know that you believe in them.

# 22: Your biggest enemy in this business is doubt.

Most people struggle with some of type of self-image problem. You must get your own thinking right if you want to succeed in life. You must be confident, without being arrogant. You want to build up your belief in your company, the products, the industry and most importantly, yourself.

What is an Amway Crown?

In case you are wondering, a Crown is one of the top ranks in Amway. It is someone who has 18 different legs that qualified silver or higher for 6 of the 12 months in the past fiscal year. Plus, the person qualifying for Crown must also be a Platinum themselves. Another option is to maintain the rank of Diamond for six or more months of the fiscal year and have at least 22 FAA points during the fiscal year. The bottom line is that anyone with this rank has a huge team and is making a substantial income, probably seven figures or more.

About Jim and Nancy Dornan

Jim and Nancy Dornan joined Amway in 1971. Although they got off to a slow start, they currently have one of the largest teams in the entire company. They are the founders of Network Twentyone, which provides business support materials and training to their team members. Their team operates in more than 40 different countries. In addition, they are one of the most respected couples in Amway. Sadly, Jim passed away a few years ago.

  1. Chuck, great article but I want to comment on one of the suggested readings. The book Dornan co-authored with John Maxwell “Becoming a person of influence” is fantastic. Anybody who hasn’t read it should pick it up.

  2. I have learned a lot from this article about Jim and Nancy Dornan. Starting a small business is not an easy thing. You need to be motivated and keep on trying when you fail, because according to Henry Ford, “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently”. So don’t think that you are a loser. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Charles!

    1. Good points, Donna. You definitely have to fail your way to success. Success is never a straight line. It is filled with zigs and zags and ups and downs. It can be an emotional roller coaster at times, so learning to be mentally tough and managing your expectations and emotions are vitally important.

  3. One thing that people must learn is to change their way of thinking. Most people are used to trading hours for dollars via a job. That is what we are taught to do by our parents, the school system and even the universities.

    When you start a business, you need to give yourself time to succeed, especially if you don’t have the required skills or experience. If you’re starting a new business part-time, you will go through a learning curve. Don’t expect to start making the big bucks right out the gate. Good things take time. Pay your dues, do the work, be patient and stay the course.

    Lead with your heart and the mindset to help others and your income will flow.

      One of the biggest issues I had when I joined the MLM Industry back in 2002 was that I had an employee mindset. Even though I was brought up in an entrepreneurial family, I still had the wrong mindset about my business. And yes, Amway was my first business.

      I was used to trading “X” amount of hours to earn “Y” amount of dollars. That is not how business works. Your goal your first year in any new business is to learn and survive. In the beginning, you earn less than minimum wage, but as time goes on, you can earn considerably more, even if you work less.

      I would argue that “mindset” and “stinking thinking” and “unrealistic expectations” leads to at least 95% of the failures in our industry.
