I hate my life…
When Chuck suggested this post title to me, I immediately wondered if he had looked at my past.
Truth be told, he found an absolute expert on this subject.
For many years, I did hate my life. But I did not know what, or how to make it better. Just to give you a slight idea on why I hated life:
- Emotional abuse as a teen (from a stepfather who is now deceased) had me leaving home as a runaway at 15 years old.
- I wed at 18 and joined the Army but because of an injury from a car accident years before, I was given a medical discharge about half way through AIT. Back home with no job.
- I sold marijuana to feed my family and was caught. 3 to 6 years in prison. Yea, I hated life.
But you know what? I am somewhat fibbing because even through that, I never actually hated my life.
I knew I had something to offer the world and I set out to discover what that was.
There were forces at work trying to make me hate my life. After all…
- My Grandson was killed at 23 months old. I felt it was murder but no charges ever filed.
- My home burned.
- My wife of 30 years passed away.
- My daughter was found dead.
But guess what? I have never and will never hate my life. And, I am always looking for ways to make it better.
With all the experience I have with bad things in life and my standing through them, I believe I can give you some tips on how to make your life better.
So here are 10 ways.
1: Seek Your Higher Power
Personally, I am a Christian. I read the Bible and pray and I believe this has helped me.
I understand that you may not have the same faith as I do and I will not say that you must. You have a choice. I will say that I believe that anyone that calls themselves an atheist is deceiving their self. I think everyone has some kind of higher power and that is all I will say on that.
For me, God has made my life better.
2: Quit Asking Why Me
There is no sense in asking why me…
I have discovered that using “what can I do now?” or “what’s next?” gives you the power and control to determine your future.
3: Get The Negative Out
While I could have separated this into several tips, I believe one will do:
- Stop thinking and speaking negatively
- Stay clear of negative people
- Don’t read or watch negative media
This isn’t easy, but it is possible. You just need to recognize where, when and who the negative is coming and escape to a positive zone.
4: Have Someone You Can Talk With
Everyone needs someone they can trust with their secrets and emotions. I suggest you find that person you know is willing to listen without being judgmental. It could be a friend, a counselor, a pastor… Just find the person you know will listen and uplift you.
5: Be Grateful
Here is my tip… 3 times every day, take just a few minutes and name everything you are grateful for that day. It can be the simplest of things or highly complex. Just voice your gratefulness.
Guess what… I am grateful for you who are reading this; I am grateful that I have the ability to write, and I am grateful that Chuck Holmes owns this blog and allows me to write here.

6: Make A Choice To Be Happy
Happiness isn’t a brand new Ferrari.
Happiness isn’t a cruise to the Caribbean.
You see, happiness can be had no matter the circumstances. It is simply your choice.
Sure, the Ferrari sounds great and I will reach to get it.
The Caribbean is wonderful… I know because I live in Puerto Rico.
But I would still be happy even if I was living in a shack in Siberia because happiness is a choice and should not be dependent on material items.
7: Quit Fearing Failure
One of the biggest underlying reasons people hate their lives is because they fear failure.
They fear failing so much, they are unwilling to try anything. Life is a series of risks and the only way a person can actually find success is to fail their way to it.
Learn to embrace failure and you will find a love for life you cannot possibly imagine.
There is nothing like an early morning jog or bicycle ride.
Exercise is a great way to realize that you do love yourself and your life. Get in shape and you will fall back in love with life.
9: Eat Right
Many people need to realize that what they are putting in their bodies is also a leading factor in how they feel about life.

10: Focus On Others
I have discovered that when I focus on solving other people’s problems, I also solve my own problems.
So much of hating life for people is based on their circumstances and those circumstances usually involve money.
I just want to tell you that I have found a way to make residual income and all it takes is me doing what I normally do… Just talking, writing and having fun.
