How to Use an Auto-Responder to Grow Your MLM Business Online

Today, I want to do a post about how to use auto-responders to grow your MLM Business online.  I should start by telling you that my auto-responder is the most valuable tool in my online business.  I would give up my own downline and websites before I gave up my auto-responder and my list.  The money IS in the list.

An auto-responder is nothing more than a software program that manages your email list.  It allows people to automatically be added to your list when they opt-in on your website.  It automatically removes people who unsubscribe.  It sends out emails for you whenever you want.  It can do many things to make your life easier and make you more money.  It works for you 24/7, even while you sleep.

If you have any inclination to build your MLM Business online, you need an auto-responder.  It should be the first business tool that you purchase. I highly suggest you use Aweber.  That’s the only auto-responder I use and recommend myself (read my review).

Now that we have that out of the way, I’m going spend the rest of my time teaching you HOW to use an auto-responder to grow your MLM Business online the right way.

First and foremost you need choose your auto-responder service.  The most popular ones are Aweber, Get Response, GVO and Mail Chimp.  There are many to choose from.  Ultimately, you want one with the highest deliverability rates.

Once you have your auto-responder, you need to create your lists.  Each list is simply a segmented group of people.  One list would be for your customers, one for your team and one for your prospects.

Next, you need to create your follow up messages and delivery sequence.  Ideally, you want to write at least 10-20 follow-up messages for EACH list.  You start with a welcome message, to thank people for subscribing and let them know what your list is all about and how often they can expect to hear from you.

The next thing you do is write the rest of your follow-up messages for each list.  You want your email messages to EDUCATE your list, rather than try to sell them.  Your ultimate goal is to build a relationship with the people on your list, so they know you, like you and trust you and WANT to do business with you.  The best way to do that is to provide value and TEACH your prospect everything you know.

Once you have your follow-up messages written you need to set a delivery sequence.  I’ve tried many different delivery sequences myself and I’ve found that sending a message every three days works best for me.  That is what I use myself recommend.

Here’s an example of what you might want to do with each list.

For Your Team

  • 30 follow-up training emails
  • A daily tip for their first thirty days in the business
  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Weekly updates with specials, conference call information and team updates
  • Your monthly newsletter

For Your Customers

  • 10-20 messages educating them about different products
  • Answers to frequently asked questions
  • A weekly email with specials
  • Your monthly newsletter

For Your Prospects

  • 10-20 messages explaining the business
  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Weekly specials and promotions and incentives
  • Your monthly newsletter

In your auto-responder you have two types of messages: follow-up and broadcast.  Your follow-up messages are the messages you write as part of a follow-up sequence.  Everyone on your list gets these messages in sequential order.

The second type of message is a broadcast message.  This is a ONE TIME message you can send out when you have an important update or information to share with your list.  It’s not part of your follow-up process.

I try to send out one broadcast message a week to all my lists, in addition to the scheduled follow-up messages.  I do this when I have special promotion, updated information, or anything important to share.  I use a broadcast message to send out my newsletters as well.

What I should do now is give you a sample follow-up sequence, just to give you some ideas.  In this example, I’ll pretend we are creating a follow-up sequence for our prospects.  Here’s what I would do.

  • Email # 1: Welcome Message
  • Email # 2: Your Personal Story with the Company
  • Email # 3: 10 Things You Love About Your Company
  • Email # 4: Common Questions and Answers
  • Email # 5: Common Myths
  • Email # 6: The Benefits of a Home Based Business
  • Email # 7: A Story About Your Favorite Product
  • Email # 8: Your System for Building a Business
  • Email # 9: An Invitation to Contact You
  • Email # 10: Your Company in the News
  • Email # 11: A Review of Why People Don’t Join
  • Email # 12: A Coupon for 25% off Their First Order
  • Email # 13: What You Will Do to Help Your New Team Member
  • Email # 14: 60 Day Follow-up
  • Email # 15: 90 Day Follow-up

Messages one through thirteen would go out every three days.  Messages fourteen would go out three weeks after message thirteen, so it showed up on day sixty.  Message fifteen would go out thirty days after that.

The real beauty of this sequence is that (1) you are staying in touch with your prospect minimum twice per week, (2) you are educating them about the business and products, and (3) you are getting them to know you, like you and trust you.

Some of your hot prospects will join right away.  Some won’t ever join.  Many others will join three to twelve MONTHS from now, when the timing is right for them.  The beauty of having an auto-responder is it lets your prospects simmer in the crock pot until they are ready to get started.

In your messages, you don’t use pressure or hype.  You simply educate and offer value.  They see you as an expert, someone serious who can help them, and they choose to work for you.

Most people who opt-in my auto-responder don’t end up joining my team for at least six months.  Chew on that!  Some join right away, but most don’t.  Because I have an automated follow-up system in place, I stay in touch often, my prospect doesn’t forget about me, and when the timing is right for them, they reach out to me.

And that’s exactly what you want in your business.

Isn’t this a lot better than just talking to someone one time and then moving on the the next person.  I think so.  You have to remember that most people need to see a message at least 20 TIMES before they will respond and take action.  Your auto-responder keeps your message in front of your prospect until they buy, die or unsubscribe.  To me, that is awesome.

The bottom line is that you need an autoresponder if you want to work smart and automate your follow-up process for your online MLM business.  You also need to follow up frequently and offer value.  Don’t create a bunch of emails to hype, pressure or convince your prospects to join.  Instead, educate them.  Answer their questions.  Position yourself as an expert.  That is what the pros do and that’s what you should do.

Regardless of some factions of opinions, there ARE ways to make it work. Varying up the responses makes it seem more personal and inviting. Excellent post!

Someone else mentioned about abusing auto-responders, and I believe this can be true, but if used correctly, they save time, and also cut down on errors. I have come to really like Mail Chimp, but I know Aweber is also a great auto-responding system.

    The examples you gave are something every network marketer should look at and even pront for the proper way to use an auto-responder.

    Do you offer any classes or ebooks on how to properly manage an auto-responder? You are good with them, I figured you could be educating others.

  4. This was one of my biggest mistakes when I had my website. I tried to make all responses myself and failed terribly. In the name of trying to save money, I probably lost a lot of money.

    Yes, I agree….an auto-responder is one of the best investments a person can make in their network marketing business. In fact, any business that does online selling should have an auto-responder.

  5. An auto-responder is without a doubt one of if not the most significant tool you can have when trying to build your MLM. It’s the best time-management tool I have and it really helps to keep me on track and keep everyone on my lists regularly informed. I think that without this tool you waste a lot of time and can very easily get backed up in terms of who you need to keep in touch with and when. I too prefer Aweber and highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for an auto-responder service.

  6. I couldn’t agree more! Along with youtube channels, websites, blogs, and online advertising, an auto-responder is another really effective tool for generating exclusive MLM leads. It’s also an excellent way to consistently educate customers, stay in touch with prospects, and share info with your team.

    Although an auto-responder is quite a precious tool, it also has the potential to be abused. If not used correctly – too many emails, aggressively worded emails, etc. – it’s a waste of money. However, used well, I think it’s one of the best MLM tools out there.

  7. Wow, if you lay the proper groundwork, auto-responder really does work to build your MLM network. People want to feel engaged and supported and auto-responder does just that without you having to create personalized information each and every time. MLM can be overwhelming and I like the idea of giving people the information they need without pressure or bombarding them.
