How to Make More Money from Your MLM Retail Customers

One of my website visitors asked me this questions yesterday: “How do I make more money from my MLM Retail Customers?” I thought that was a very interesting question, so I wanted to turn it into a blog post.

While most people in MLM only focus on team building, I have to tell you that there are many merits to building a large customer base FIRST.  Some of the merits include residual income, repeat orders, and immediate cash flow.

Now, I’m not telling you NOT to build a team of distributors.  You should.  That’s where the big money will come from later on down the road.  I just think it’s foolish to ignore the retail side of the business.  Personally, I like to lead with the products and follow with the business opportunity (just my opinion).

Just think, if everyone on your team had just five to ten customers, they would have a positive cash flow in their business AND they wouldn’t be so quick to quit the business.

In addition to getting lots of retail customers for your MLM Business, you should also find creative ways to make more money from your customers.

You can do that by:

  • Getting more orders
  • Getting larger orders
  • Making customers life-long customers
  • Selling additional, non-competing products and services to your customers

In the paragraphs below, I want to share some simple, easy to follow instructions that you can follow to make more money from your MLM Retail Customers.

My first bit of advice is to never look at your customers like a one night stand.  Instead of thinking them as a one-time purchase, it’s much better to think of them as a life-long customer: someone who will buy things from you each month for a period of YEARS.

In order to make that happen, you need to stay in touch with them on a regular basis, at least a few times per month.  You should send notes in the mail, periodic emails and do follow-up calls to see how they are doing and see how they like the products.

One of the best things you can do is create a newsletter for your customers.  This could be a simple one to two page Microsoft Word document that you print out and send out in the mail each month.  You could also send it by email, however, that isn’t anywhere near as effective as a mailed newsletter.

In your newsletter you can do a featured product, a special of the month, a funny article, a recipe of the month, book of the month, and this day in history.  This is just an example of what to put in a newsletter.

You should also have customer appreciation events for your customers.  Once you get 20 to 30 regular customers, you should do some type of event, such as a BBQ at your house, every three to six months.  This helps improve your relationship with your customers and lets them know how much you appreciate them.

Another thing you should do is offer ADDITIONAL products and services, OUTSIDE of your MLM Company.  No one ever talks about this, but I think it’s a wise move.  Let me give you an example.  Let’s suppose you are in the weight loss category and your MLM Company offers vitamins and other weight loss products.

In your newsletter, or when you are communicating with your customers, you could also offer weight loss books (through an affiliate link), training courses (affiliate products), skin care products (different MLM Company), and many other things.  Your goal is to find products and services that offer a VALUE to your customers and will benefit them.

Ideally, you want three to five good income streams, with your MLM Company being just one of those income streams.

Many folks who buy your MLM Products will also buy additional products that you recommend to them.  This gives you multiple streams of income.

So there you have it folks.  If you want to make more money from your MLM Retail Customers you need to:

  1. Think of your customers as life-long customers, not a single sale
  2. Communicate three or four times per month, via email, phone, and mail
  3. Send a monthly newsletter IN THE MAIL each month
  4. Offer a variety of products and services, in addition to your MLM Company
  5. Develop multiple streams of income

If you can do these five things you will be well on your way in your business.  You will make more retail sales, you will get repeat customers and you will make more money in your business.

  1. I just had another great way of gaining more from your existing customers that I am surprised I did not think of in my previous comments. Upselling is a great way to make more. You have a product you are sure the customer who is buying another product would like. When they order the product they always order, cut them a slight break on the price of the product you want them to try. Let them know it is a special one-time deal, because you are sure they will like it. This works, I know because I have used that technique.

    • Why not recommend other products and services that will benefit your customer?

  2. As I was reading this great post again, something else came to my mind about getting more from your retail customers. Personally, I am not a huge fan of auto-ship, but if you have a customer that is consistently ordering a certain item or two, auto-ship seems like a wise choice. You can point out to them that since they are using that item on a consistent schedule, why not just have it come to your door, instead of having to call me? It will help you build a steady income, and when they see how well it works, maybe they will add more products to their auto-ship.

    • I’m not a big fan of auto-ship either, but in some cases it can work really well. It depends upon what you are selling, and the person.

  3. Wow, some great information here. I like the part about not treating customers like a one night stand. If they bought from you once, they will buy from you again. I would also add that you can probably help your MLM business by getting customer testimonies. Offer them a small free gift for your right to “publish” their testimony. People listen to other people and you may find your phone ringing because Leroy Jamison said that the product you sold him did wonders. This is just another way that you can get more from your retail customer base.

    • Testimonials are a great way to get more customers. If you have a happy customer, see if they will do a video testimonial, or something written, and share it with your other prospects and customers.
