How to Keep Focused in Your MLM Business

Today, I want to talk about how to keep focused in your MLM Business.  I will be the first to admit that I am VERY good at focusing on the important things.  Once I zoom in on something, I stay with it until I make it.  It’s probably one of my greatest strengths.

On the other hand, I am also an IDEA GUY.  I love researching new ideas, looking for new strategies and trying different things to grow my network marketing business.  I’m always looking for one great idea that can change my life for the better.

From time to time I do get side tracked in my network marketing business.  Even I am guilty of changing my strategy and trying a different approach once in a while.  Whenever I lose my focus, my business always take a hit!  Maybe you can relate to that and maybe you can’t.

The bottom line is that I am the most productive when I am focused on ONE thing, the main thing, at a time.

For the rest of this post I want to teach you the importance of focus and also teach you how to BE FOCUSED in your network marketing business.  Hopefully, these lessons will help you avoid some of the mistakes I have made myself in the past.


If you were to look up the word “focus” in the dictionary you would find the following definitions:

“The state or quality of having or producing clear visual definition.”


“A main purpose or interest.”

If I had to define it in my own words I would define it as the ability to focus exclusively on ONE thing until you are finished with that thing.

Focus is simply your ability to minimize distractions and keep the main thing the main thing.  It’s the ability to finish what you start.

If I had to give you an example of focus in action I would talk about how cats hunt at night.  If you’ve ever watched a cat hunt at night (or during the day) you will see that they will sit still FOR HOURS until their prey gets close enough to kill.  The cat doesn’t let anything else distract them.  They are focused and in the zone.  As a result, they usually find something to kill and eat, every time they hunt.

I think FOCUS is important in network marketing because there are so many distractions in the world.  It is so easy to get sidetracked in your business and in the real world.  It’s so easy to be busy but not productive.

You have so many things competing for your attention: your job, your family, television, your hobbies, and your business.  You also have ALL THOSE SHINY OBJECTS that you read about and hear about that are trying to draw you away from your main focus.

I’ve found that successful network marketers tune out all of the noise.  They know what they want, they have a game plan, and they keep the main thing the main thing.

By all means, they do a good job at their day job, they keep their family commitments, and they even have time for other things.

But when it is time to work their network marketing business every day and every week, THEY WORK!  And they focus on the money producing activities in their business: prospecting, showing the plan, following up, getting customers and training their team.


For the rest of this article I want to teach you HOW to focus in your MLM Business.  Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to learn.  I’ve broken it down into a six step process for you to follow.

STEP # 1: Establish Your Goals

The first step in the process is to establish your goals.  You must be crystal clear about what you expect out of your network marketing business.  These goals MUST be written down on paper and given a deadline.  Your goals should stretch you, but they should also be realistic based upon how much time you will invest to build your business and what your current skill-set is.

STEP # 2: Draft Up a Game Plan

Once you have your written goals, your next step is to come up with a game plan. This game plan will cover the activities you will do every day to build your business.  It will cover your marketing strategy and it will also break down your goals into bite-sized chunks.   Your game plan should be written on a single piece of paper and it should be in a checklist form for daily activities, weekly activities and monthly activities.

STEP # 3: Schedule Your Time

Your next step is to schedule your time.  Your MLM Business needs set hours.  You must block off time every day in your day planner to work your business.  If you were going to have a traditional business you would have set working hours.  So make sure you set some business hours for your network marketing business, even if it’s just an hour a day.

STEP # 4: Work On the Right Tasks When You Are Supposed to Work

This should be common sense, but during your set business hours, make sure ALL of your time is focused on money producing activities.  Organizing your desk, sorting through files, and surfing the net DOES NOT count as productive work.  You can do these things, just not during your business hours.

STEP # 5: Ignore the Noise & Don’t Deviate

For some people, this might be the hardest step in the process of keeping focused.  Now that you have a strategy and game plan for your network marketing business, you don’t need to surf YouTube for new ideas.  You don’t need to visit a bunch of blogs to get new ideas.  You don’t need to read hundreds of newsletters or go on the forums. You don’t need to try a strategy you just learned in a book.

In fact, the best thing you can do is IGNORE all of these things and focus on your game plan.  The problem with taking in all this information is that it will confuse you, give you information overload and make you lose focus.  You’ll end up being busy going nowhere fast.

STEP # 6: Stay Accountable

If you are REALLY serious about your network marketing business, you need to keep yourself accountable to someone else.  I suggest you counsel with your successful upline and call them every day (or email them).  Send them a status report.  Keep a journal with your daily progress.   Compare yourself month to month and reward yourself for hitting your goals.

There you have it folks.  This is my advice to keep focused in your MLM Business.  The beauty of network marketing is that you can work hard, with concentrated focused effort, and completely change your life for the better.  No, you won’t achieve success overnight, but if you stay consistent and do the right activities, you will eventually succeed.  I can almost guarantee that.

  1. My decision to stay focused on building my business has really helped me to achieve more in less time.

    I use to be distracted with the so much noise especially in the online space.

    Right now, I have set my priorities and I only give attention to the the things that matters most in twrns if building my business

  2. Like has been said, writing down the schedule is very important. I don’t always follow that rule and on days I don’t, they usually do not go well. Focus is a quite important thing, this is where I think multi-taskers have some issues. By not focusing on one thing, they end up not doing a job with their full capabilities. Sure, it may be done and passable, but it probably could have been done much better. Focusing is important not only in Network Marketing. I believe it is needed in everything.

  3. Staying focused is a major issue for me, or at least staying on task is. I have three children, two of which are still very dependent and about to be home with me for the entire summer after the school year ends tomorrow. I find that keeping a to-do list is absolutely essential. I often think of things that I need to do when I am away from my computer, so I jot them down on the notepad that I carry everywhere with me. Sometimes those tasks stay on that list for quite a while, but at least I am aware that they still exist!

  4. I make up a list of the things I want to accomplish that week on Sunday afternoons. This keeps me focused. I also keep a list of what I did accomplish to remind me of what I did besides what I planned to. This is also useful in network marketing as far as keeping track of expenses (if you write down that you went to that meeting then you have it documented that you went and can figure out your mileage, etc).Doing this list every week has helped me more than anything else to keep focused.
