If you are involved in network marketing, and you plan on being in this great industry for the long haul, I highly encourage you to be an ambassador to our industry. I encourage you to become a Network Marketing Professional (a term coined by Eric Worre). In the paragraphs below, I’m going to share ten simple tips you should follow so you can do that. They are listed in no particular order.
# 1 Always treat your prospects with respect
Whether someone joins your team or not, treat them with respect. Never guilt trip people or give them a hard time because they aren’t interested in what you have to offer (or if they quit your team). Treat everyone as nice as you would treat your own mother. What goes around comes around. If you treat people badly, they are going to go out and tell everyone they know how awful they think you, your company and this industry are.
# 2 Never lie
Never lie and tell your prospect what you think they want to hear. Don’t tell them something just to get them into your business. Always be honest and straightforward, even if it means you lose a good prospect.
# 3 Never use hype to sponsor someone
One of the reasons our industry gets a bad name is because so many folks use a bunch of hype, promising big money or instant riches. Don’t do that. Don’t tell people it’s easy money or that you will do all the work for them. Let them know there is a lot of work involved, but the reward is worth the effort.
# 4 Never badmouth another company
I see this one of all of the time online. Don’t bash other companies, even if you don’t like them. Speak highly of your competition. Let people know there are lots of great companies in this industry. Don’t ever tell someone they joined a bad company.
# 5 Never badmouth other people
Even if you don’t like another distributor, or even someone in your upline, don’t say bad things about them to other people. That just makes you look unprofessional. Besides, you wouldn’t want someone doing that to you. If you think badly of someone keep it to yourself. And if you are a blogger like I am, don’t write a bunch of negative posts or “scam” posts. It just makes you look like an idiot.
# 6 Be proud of what you do
Be proud to be a network marketer. We are a great profession. You have no reason to hide behind something or be ashamed of anything. Take pride in everything you do. Hang your head high.
# 7 Educate yourself about your company and the industry
One of the best things you can do is improve your product knowledge and industry knowledge. Read a lot of books, study your product line and be a sponge. Learn everything you can about the industry, so you understand it and can explain it to others.
# 8 Support other companies
It’s really important to support other companies. If other companies have a non-competing product line with your company, you should be a customer of theirs. Support other network marketers and their companies. I try to buy products from 20+ different companies. If a network marketing company makes it, I buy it. I believe in supporting the industry. You should too!
# 9 Attend industry events
You should attend several generic network marketing events each year. These are training or leadership events designed to teach you more about the industry. This is a great way to meet other professionals and improve your knowledge at the same time. You should also subscribe to MLM Publications.
# 10 Teach your team what right looks like
As you acquire all of this knowledge, make sure you share it with your team. Show them what right looks like. Teach them the right thing to do. Grow and build professionals in your own team. Share your wisdom.

Great principles for networkers to follow. I think it goes back to honesty, integrity and development – these traits are key to successful businesses and will never serve you wrong. I appreciate the point about educating yourself on other companies and their practices. You will learn things that will influence how you do business and probably a few business traits that you don’t want to model.
Do the right thing and good things will happen to you. Never badmouth another company. Always be a professional and do what you can to make the entire industry look good.
Your first point is one that I have made and stressed for years. You have to treat everyone with respect and dignity. You have no idea who may just be a passing client and who may become your next big money maker. So have you to treat everyone like they are the best customer you have- because they very well could be!
I tell everyone to treat their prospect as good as they would treat their own parent. Whether people join your team or not, or even give you a hard time, make sure you are a professional.
Supporting other companies within the network marketing industry is an excellent thought and tip. This is something I would follow from now on. Supporting other companies would certainly boost growth within industry. Also it is a fact that many of the people create hype and makes a lot of false promises that they fail to fulfill. Network marketing is something where success could not be achieved overnight, it is hard work. You may not be able to stop others but can create a good example yourself!
I think every distributor from every company should be an Ambassador to our industry. Support other companies, be a professional, and treat your business seriously. If more folks did that, you would really see our reputation improve.
It is important to remember that we all are ultimately working together- when one business succeeds it can open new opportunities for other business too. Likewise, when a business fails things can start going downhill for the entire market or industry.
I agree. Rather than seeing everyone else as your competition, find ways that you can work together and help each other. In the long run, it’s a smart decision to do that.
You are so correct with that Chuck.
Even though we are in competition doesn’t mean we need to be enemies. If we all support each other, the reputation of the complete network marketing world will grow better. If we attack each other, people will see it and not want to be involved in any of the companies at all.
You had mentioned hype and lies too. This kind of stuff needs to stop. I believe MLM companies need to police their own ranks and when they discover any of their members using these techniques, they need to come down hard on them.
Thanks for bringing this out in the light. People need to be aware of these things.
Every time we say something bad about another company or distributor we hurt the industry.
