Do you need a good sponsor to succeed in network marketing? My answer to that question is NO. Having a good sponsor certainly helps, but it’s not mandatory.
Almost every single top earner I personally know did not have a good sponsor. In more than 80% of the time, their sponsor QUIT the business, leaving them to figure things out on their own.
In many cases, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because it forced them to take some initiative and take responsibility for their own network marketing business.
The Typical Person
Almost every day, I have someone contact me to bitch and complain about their sponsor. They argue that their sponsor isn’t helping them. Or, they claim that they and their sponsor have conflicting personalities or different political views.
I often wonder, what do these people EXPECT from their sponsor? If you’re expecting your sponsor to build your business for you, be your best friend, motivate you, call you every day to check in, sign people up for you, and hand hold you, you are way out in left field.
Remember, YOU are the CEO of your own network marketing business. Your sponsor is not your babysitter. It’s your business. No one cares about your business as much as you do. It’s your job to man up or woman up and figure things out on your own.
If you have a great sponsor, consider yourself lucky. Most people don’t have this benefit.
People who complain about their sponsor have a VICTIM mentality. That means that they think success comes from something outside of themselves. With that attitude, I know they will never make it in the business. Why? Because, I’ve never met a successful victim.
Next, I often wonder if they even ASKED their sponsor for help. Chances are, they expected their sponsor to read their mind and call them all the time. Folks, that isn’t going to happen. Remember this; you have one sponsor, but your sponsor might have THOUSANDS of team members.
If I was responsible to call everyone that I personally sponsored into the business every single day, or even once every week, I would not do this business. Why? Because, I’m not a babysitter. And, I don’t have the time to do that. Plus, I’m not here to manage or motivate people. Instead, I’m here to LEAD people and INSPIRE people.
Yes, I offer help. But only when it is asked for. I’m accessible too, but I expect my team members to call me when they have questions or need help, just like I call my sponsor when I have questions or need help.
What is a Good Sponsor?
A good sponsor is someone who leads by example at all times and shows their team what is possible in the business. They retail and recruit every single day. They offer some type of system and training for their team. And, they are accessible. They return calls and emails promptly. However, they never do things for their team that they should be doing for themselves.
What You Really Need to Succeed
What you really need to succeed in this great industry is a mentor. Ideally, that mentor should be someone in your upline, but that is not mandatory either.
Speaking from personal experience, I will tell you that I have never met any of my mentors in this industry. And only ONE of my mentors have I ever worked with personally (in their downline). All of my mentors have come from books, videos, events, and training courses.
What you really want is someone who is accessible, knowledgeable, and willing to help you. You want someone with proven results who is willing to guide you. And, you must HUMBLE yourself enough to do the business THEIR WAY. What good is having a mentor if you won’t follow their lead or listen to their advice?
The final thing you need to succeed in network marketing is HUSTLE. Some folks call this desire. Others call it initiative. Basically, you need to be willing to get off your ass and get to work.
Very few people who join our industry are willing to do these things (only five to ten percent of all people in the industry, if that). Without hustle, your business won’t grow and your mentor will be reluctant to invest much time helping you (and rightfully so).
What Should I Do Now?
If you’re serious about your network marketing business, and want to take it to the next level, you need to find a mentor. Start by calling people in your upline. Call your sponsor and find out who their sponsor is. Call their sponsor and find out who their sponsor is. Keep calling people in your upline support team until you find SOMEONE who knows what they are doing and is willing to help you.
If that doesn’t work, find a mentor in your company that is cross line to you. A good leader will let cross line reps plug-in to their system and training.
If that option isn’t available either, find a mentor outside of your company. There are tons of good MLM Trainers you can learn from without joining their team. Read books, watch YouTube videos, attend generic events, and listen to CDs in your car.
If that option doesn’t work for you, find a new company to join. After you pick the company you want to work with, seek out a good sponsor/mentor.
One More Thing
Lots of people in our industry do join the business with a great sponsor and still quit or fail. That’s because they lack the initiative and hustle. They never take responsibility for their own business, or do the work, even though they have a great sponsor/mentor. Or, they aren’t coachable. Instead of listening to their mentor, they want to do it their way. Once again, the most important success factor in your business is YOU!
So, do you need a good sponsor to succeed in network marketing? Nope. But, having a good sponsor/mentor will be very beneficial. What’s more important is that you take ownership of your OWN business. You put in the work, stay coachable, work the numbers, and realize your success or failure is ultimately up to you and you alone.
