Dick Gregory’s Bahamian Diet: Review & History

Dick Gregory’s Bahamian Diet has been around for quite some time.

Due to the fact that we have many weight loss interest and experts on this website, I’ve decided to provide a review of the diet as well as the history behind it. This information was collected from independent research online. Any sources I used are respectively quoted within the article.

First things first: who is Dick Gregory?

About Dick Gregory

Dick Gregory is over 80 years old now. He was born in St Louis, Missouri in the 1930’s and lived in poor conditions. Trying to escape poverty, Dick ran. He was a star in track and field in college, but was drafted into the Army in 1954.

In the Army, Dick had a gift of making Soldiers laugh. His Commander talked him into entering some talent shows where he excelled.

After leaving the Army, Dick made his way to Chicago where he opened a nightclub, but it failed driving Dick back into financial difficulty. But he didn’t stop and was soon noticed by Hugh Hefner. Dick performed his humor to mostly white audiences at the Playboy Club.

Last time I was down South I walked into this restaurant and this white waitress came up to me and said, “We don’t serve colored people here.” I said, “That’s all right. I don’t eat colored people. Bring me a whole fried chicken.” Dick Gregory

Besides comedy, Dick Gregory was a huge voice in political activism. During the 1960’s, you would see Dick in the midst of protests with people like Martin Luther King Jr and others. He was often going on hunger strikes to show his loyalty to change.

Dick even ran for President in 1968 as a write-in candidate and received a lot of votes.

In all of this, Dick’s health began to deteriorate. He knew he needed to change his style of life and in the 1980’s, Dick became a leading figure in the health food industry. He had become a semi-strict vegetarian and knew it was a benefit.

Dick first developed a drink called the Bahamian Diet Nutritional Drink which became popular.

Health Enterprises Inc.

In 1984, Dick founded Health Enterprises Inc. The goal was to help African Americans live a healthier lifestyle. In 1985, he introduced the Slim Safe Bahamian Diet, which was a powdered diet mix. This mix drank three times per day was meant to cause rapid weight loss.

Dick updated that formula in 2014 and it is still selling well.

What Is The Bahamian Diet?

The Bahamian Diet developed by Mr. Gregory is actually a vegetarian food diet along with the supplement Dick now calls the Caribbean Diet for Optimal Health.

The supplement is full of a variety of vegan nutritional items to help you lose weight. There is rice and flaxseed powder, coffee bean, bitter melon and milk thistle extract, mango and lime fruit powder and much more…

According to “The Juice on Dick Gregory,” the Bahamian diet “flushes out all the poisons you’ve ever had in your belly. For the next 30 days, I want you to eat no bread, cereal, rice, pasta, milk, yogurt, cheese, meat, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, legumes, fats, oils, or sweets.” Eat fruits and vegetables raw, without steaming. When possible, juice fruits and vegetables to receive the highest level of nutrition. ~ Healthy Living

Does it Work?

I have not tried it but there are many testimonials from people on the amazing power of this diet plan. There was one study performed on rats that showed no weight loss but super improvements on blood glucose levels. Another study on New Orleans police officers showed great weight loss results along with healthier tests from checkups.

According to multiple case studies published in 1989 in the Journal of the National Medical Association, the Bahamian Diet shows promise. “The 4X formula is high in minerals and trace elements.” The journal article references four case studies, all with positive outcomes, however, these results would have to be repeated in multiple large scale studies before considering it safe and effective.

One study involved advanced protein energy malnutrition in Ethiopian children. The Bahamian Diet powder was mixed with a small amount of vegetable oil, table sugar, water and whole cow’s milk. Regular administering of the supplement reversed clinical and biochemical features in the nine children who participated in the study. ~ Live Strong

8 thoughts on “Dick Gregory’s Bahamian Diet: Review & History”

  1. I used Dick Gregory’s Powder in 1990 for an entire year. Breakfast and lunch with a small meal for dinner. Nothing else. I lost 225 pounds in that year. It transformed my life. I wish I could get more of it.

  2. I used Mr. Gregory’s diet years ago. Although I did lose weight, it wasn’t much.

I felt hungry constantly and I had no energy. My doctor took me off of it.

Later I found out it was suppose to be used with a vegetarian diet as a supplement. So basically I WAS not using it correctly.

I knew a few people that used it as a complete diet and gave up on it.

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience using his diet. I’ve noticed that diets work for people if they stick with them, but sadly most people revert back to their normal eating patterns (myself included). I think lifestyle changes are a much better solution to keep the weight off long term.

    1. Maybe you could find it on Amazon or eBay. Or, you can Google around for former distributors and try to come up with someone you can contact, who still has some inventory. Other than that, I’m not sure where to look.
