Dana Collins: Lessons from the 2015 MLM Mastermind Event

In today’s post I want to share 12 lessons that I learned during Dana Collins’ speech during the 2015 MLM Mastermind Event in Orlando, Florida.  These are notes that I took during her speech.  In other words, they are paraphrased and are not her exact quotes.  Each lesson is in bold and italics.  At the end of each lesson I share my own two cents.  Enjoy.

# 1 How do you spend your time?  This is a question that each one of us should put a considerable amount of thought into.  Most of us are not very disciplined with our time.  Most people in our industry are doing the business part-time, therefore, they also have their job and family responsibilities.  If you want success with your network marketing business you must plan your work and work your plan.  You must master time management and spend 90% or more of your business hours on money producing activities.  You don’t have to put in tons of hours every week, but you must consistently work 10-20 hours per week on money producing activities.

# 2 What does your calendar say about your commitment to the business? Show me someone who is struggling in their network marketing business and I will show you someone with an empty calendar.  In other words, most people who don’t do well in our industry have not consistently worked their business on the money producing activities.  I would argue that if you are showing 10-20 plans per month it would be next to impossible to struggle in the business.

# 3 Commitment precedes success.  In order to become successful, you must first be committed to your goals and business. If you must wait until you are successful first, before you commit, you will never become successful.  It really is that simple.

# 4 You are looking for people who will commit.  When you are out prospecting you are looking for people who have a big burning desire to succeed, have a good work ethic, and are willing to stick with one thing until successful.  This is not more than 10 to 20 percent of the population.  Commitment is a skill that most people stink at.   You want someone who will do whatever it takes for as long as it takes. Keep in mind that finding just 2-3 people who will commit can lead you to a six figure income.

# 5 One person’s commitment can change the world.  One committed, inspired network marketing leader really can change the world.  One “all in” network marketer can build a team of millions!  It won’t be easy or happen overnight, but if you are willing to draw a line in the sand and do whatever it takes for as long as it takes, you will eventually make it in this industry.

# 6 People don’t buy products or opportunities; they buy a solution.  People don’t buy a drill because they want  a drill.  People buy a drill because they want a hole.  Never forget that.  Your key to success with recruiting is to find out what the other person wants and show them how your products or business will help them get what they want.  People are only concerned about what’s in it for them!

# 7 To have more you must become more.  For things to get better you have to get better.  Your outer world is a reflection of your inner world.  You must work on your personal development and constantly improve.  As you grow and learn you will become the person you need to be in order to achieve the success you desire.

# 8 Get rid of your fall back plan.  Get rid of your exit strategy.  Flush the “I’ll try it” attitude down the drain.  Make a commitment that you will succeed with your business no matter what.  Adopt the “I can, I will, I shall” attitude.  As long as you have an exit strategy you will not be willing to do whatever it takes.

# 9 The grass is greener where you water it.  Ignore other opportunities.  Things are rarely as they seem.  When things aren’t going so well don’t get distracted and explore other opportunities.  Focus on what you want.  If you want greener grass, water your grass.  Put in the work and finish what you started, even after your initial enthusiasm is gone.  Don’t keep jumping from company to company looking for ferry dust.

# 10 The more problems you solve, the happier you are, and the more money you make.  As entrepreneurs we get paid to solve other people’s problems.  The more problems you solve, and the more people you serve, the greater your value is in the marketplace.  The greater your value is in the marketplace the more money you make.  It’s that simple.

# 11 We need more leaders.  This is ultimately a business of leadership and team building.  The top LEADERS are the ones who grow the biggest teams.  Leadership is nothing more than the level of influence that you have on others.  If you want to attract leaders into your team you must become a leader first.

# 12 What are you giving up by being comfortable? For most people, their comfort zone is what’s holding them back.  Most people will not stretch out of their own comfort zone because of fear of failure, fear of rejection or fear of success.  Don’t let your comfort zone keep you from greatness.  Stretch a little bit out of your comfort zone every single day.  Do things that make you uncomfortable long enough and they will eventually become new habits.

    I bet that was a great event, and Dana sounds like one of the key people who made that Mastermind event a huge success. There are some of these that I had to comment on.

    #1 is a question we should all ask ourselves weekly if not daily. I know that I can sometimes get caught up in meaningless activities that are not growing me or my business.

    I really like #8. It reminds me of a circus trapeze act that doesn’t use nets. They have to do it right or it is a serious injury or even death. If we take the net from under ourselves we will strive to grow to our best.
