MLM Elevator Speech: What It Is & How to Use It

Today, I want to talk to you about crafting your own MLM Elevator Speech. Having an MLM Elevator Speech is VERY important, especially if you want to save time and work smart in your network marketing business.

An Elevator Speech is simply a 5 to 10 second “canned” speech you can use when people ask you what you do for a living. It’s designed to explain what you do in a quick amount of time, without confusing the other person.

Let’s face it, if you are out and about actively prospecting people for your network marketing business, you know that you need a simple way to get their attention and see if they are interested in learning more about what you do.

You want to have SOMETHING you can say that will pique your prospect’s curiosity and entice them to ask you for more information about what you do.

Tips for Creating a MLM Elevator Speech

When it comes to crafting your own MLM Elevator Speech, here are a few pieces of advice:

  • Keep it short and simple; less is better
  • Don’t use fancy words or jargon that are hard to understand
  • Keep it no more than 10 seconds; 5-8 seconds is even better
  • Focus on the BENEFITS of what your business or products do
  • Avoid using any hype, lies or over-excitement
  • Cater it to your products or services, not just the business opportunity
  • Appeal to people’s emotions, not their logic
  • Write it down and practice it until you have it memorized and it sounds natural
  • Remember that CURIOSITY is what generates the most sales and interest

I highly suggest that you set aside an hour or two and craft up your own MLM Elevator Speech. Hash it down to as few words as possible until you are happy with it.

Once you’ve done that, get some feedback from your sponsor and coach. The best people to try it out on is PROSPECTS; people who don’t know you.

If you share your MLM Elevator Speech with 100 prospects and a bunch of them ask you for more information, you know you’ve done your job right. If it isn’t working very well, fine tune and improve it until it works well for you.

Tips for Giving Your MLM Elevator Speech

Here are a few of my best tips for sharing your MLM Elevator Speech with others.

# 1: Check your body language.

Make sure you are standing up straight. Look and appear confident. Smile. You don’t want to come across as desperate or creepy.

Your prospect will tend to mimic your own body language, so make sure that you are using body language to sell. When you deliberately keep your arms unfolded and your hands open, with your feet flat on the floor, ankles uncrossed, you prospect will often engage in the same body language.

When you lean slightly forward, listen attentively to what the prospect is saying, nod, smile, and listen, the prospect will often engage in the same behaviors. He or she will soon begin speaking, asking questions, and listening more attentively as well.

# 2: Don’t be boring.

Make sure you are not monotone and boring. Let your enthusiasm shine through.

Well when people stick out, they are noticed. When they are noticed, they are engaged. When they are engaged, they have influence. When they have influence, they are shared and respected. When they are respected and shared, they get more influence. When they have more influence they get more respect and more people share them, when more people respect them and share them, they get even more influence . . . so on and so on.

Stop being boring. Be provocative, be different, think different, stand-out, challenge the status quo, and be memorable and let your personality run.

Being boring is operating from fear, it’s blending in as not to be noticed. Who wants to be vanilla when there are 7 billion flavors on this earth. Screw vanilla, I say go cotton candy with M&M’s!

# 3: Don’t talk to fast.

Even though you’re excited, make sure you don’t talk to fast or to slow. This is where practice comes in handy.

The trick to speaking at an appropriate pace is remembering that you need to speak at a rate that allows your listener to understand what you’re saying. Listening is not a one-step process; we have to physically hear what is said and then translate language into meaning.

If we speak too quickly, this vital second step of the process is lost. Like expression, the natural rate at which you speak is part of your speech signature. The problem with speaking at a pace that’s either too fast or too slow is that it interferes with communication.

When you speak too quickly, you literally “blow away” your listener. He can’t mentally keep up with you and will quickly stop trying. While a small part of your message may get through, most won’t. When you speak too slowly, your listener has too much time for processing, and the mind either locks on how irritatingly slowly you’re speaking or wanders off to more interesting things.

# 4: Be in a Hurry

Remember, the purpose of the initial contact is to pique their curiosity, not to “sell” them on your business opportunity or products. Basically, you sell the sizzle and let the sizzle sell the steak. You are trying to find out if they are CURIOUS about what you do. If they are curious, let them know you have somewhere to be, but ask for their business card or contact information so you can follow-up with them at your convenience. The last thing you want to do is go into great detail about your company and products on that first initial contact.

After you give your MLM Elevator Speech to a prospect, if they act curious, ask them for their business card so you can follow-up with them at a future date. Or, hand them one of your drop cards and move along.

Example MLM Elevator Speeches

Example MLM Elevator Speeches

Here are some example MLM Elevator Speeches I just came up with, that you could use. Feel free to edit or modify these as needed to best fit your situation.

CELL PHONE SERVICE

I teach people how to get paid using their cell phone” or “I show people how to save money on their cell phone bill each month” or “I teach people how to get their cell phone service for free each month.

WEIGHT LOSS PRODUCTS

I market products that help people lose weight and get healthy without going to the gym” or “I help people get paid to lose weight” or “I educate people about wellness and weight loss.

COSMETICS

I help women look and feel beautiful” or “I help women buy department store quality cosmetics for discount store prices” or “I teach women how to get paid for wearing makeup.

TRAVEL SERVICE

I help people save money on exotic travel vacation packages” or “I market discounted travel packages for middle class Americans” or “I teach people how to get paid to travel.

NUTRITION PRODUCTS

I help people get healthy and wealthy” or “I help people look and feel healthy on the inside and out” or “I market affordable nutrition products that help others get the nutrition they need.

Once again, these are just a few examples. What I suggest you do at this point is take the examples that you like and then tailor fit it to your company and products.

Final Thoughts

The bottom line is that you NEED a good MLM Elevator Speech. You need something that is catchy, simple, and easy to remember that you can share with you prospects.

A good MLM Elevator Speech will help pre-qualify people, so you don’t waste time trying to explain your products or business opportunity to people who aren’t interested.

When you talk to people, your only objective is to find people who are interested and want more information, after they hear your elevator speech. At that point, you can collect their contact information and set up a time to do a complete presentation. I hope that makes sense.

  1. I can’t tell you how many times I have been bored while someone was giving an extensive speech about their MLM. Sometimes less is really more. People really just need to get the main points/idea as opposed to a deep thesis about it. Short, sweet, and to the point will make a much greater impression than a long and drawn out speech. Too much information may confuse and give them too much to think about.

  2. You are absolutely correct. By having a good elevator speech, you are preparing your way to success. The elevator speech will pave the way to a full presentation, because these people are going to start asking questions such as, “How do you save people money like that?” I agree Chuck that the speech needs to go through test runs. Try it different ways and watch the stats. Thanks for the reminder.
