Chuck’s MLM Weekly Wisdom # 8 – November 19, 2014

Dear Network Marketer:

Welcome to today’s training.  Here are a few tips to help you with your network marketing business.

# 1 The Art of Building Depth – Building depth is an art form that I have never really mastered myself (I’m working on it now!). Yes, I’ve been a good recruiter, but there is a lot more to network marketing than just recruiting people.  The really successful distributors, who make six figures or more, MASTER the art of building depth.  Successful distributors would rather have one large leg with 10 leaders in it than have 10 leaders on their front line.

If you ever truly want walk away income, you’re going to have to build at least 2-3 legs (minimum) HUNDREDS of levels deep.  You want legs that are deep, filled with leaders, and don’t rely on you 24/7 for help and motivation.

There are many ways to make this happen.  You can stack distributors.  You can build a power leg.  And, you can work with each person on your team in depth and help them get their business going.  Whatever you do, make sure you spend a lot of time working in depth. That’s where the big money and long-term security come from.  Here is a video by Dale Calvert about building depth that I thought you would enjoy.

# 2 Your Five Year Plan – Five years sounds like forever when you are first getting started in MLM.  The truth of the matter is five years goes by pretty quickly.  I truly believe that if you can be persistent and consistent and work your business thirty to sixty minutes a day, every day, at least six days a week, you can build a legacy for your family and you can build a huge MLM Business, in five years or less.

Most people are just very shortsighted. If they’re not making money within 90 days they quit.  When they don’t get instant results in their business, they give up.  The truth of the matter is you won’t build any type of successful business in six months or less.  Good things take time. This is not the lottery.  To make the big bucks in any business you have to be in this for the long haul.  Think of your MLM Business as an asset that you are building up over a period of time. Develop a five year plan for your business.

# 3 Your Daily Mode of Operation – All successful network marketers have a daily mode of operation.  This is what you do on a daily basis to build up your business. It’s a list of tasks that must get done every single day, no matter what.

Let’s face it; sometimes life gets in the way.  If you don’t have a daily “to-do” list or know what you have to do each day to grow your business, it probably won’t happen.  Your daily mode of operation doesn’t have to be complex either.  It should be a short list of 3-5 things you HAVE to do every day, no matter what.  An example might include (1) contact 3 prospects, (2) follow-up with one prospect and (3) call one team member.

I think that would be a good starting point.  Find something that works for you and stick with it.  I keep my daily “to do” list on a little index card next to my computer.  I don’t go to bed, or stop working, until those things are done for the day.

# 4 Improving Your People Skills – Network marketing is a people business.  You have to work with many different types of people with different backgrounds, personalities and temperaments.  Knowing how to get along with people is one of the best skills you can develop.  You have to realize that network marketing is a volunteer army and no one wants to work with a dictator.  Improving your people skills is one of the best investments you can make.  I would highly recommend the books “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie and “The Five Love Languages” by Dr. Gary Chapman.  These two books helped me a lot.

# 5 The Value of a Network Marketing Business – Building residual income via network marketing is very powerful, once you understand it.  My mentor says that 90% of the people not involved in MLM don’t get it and close to 90% of the people already involved in MLM don’t get it. I agree.

Many folks get frustrated after a year in the business if they are only making $200 per month.  What they don’t realize is that a $200 per month residual income is similar to having $120,000 in the bank at 2% interest.  Making just $500 per month in residual income is like having $300,000 in the bank at 2% interest.  Few people will ever save $120k to $300k in two years, but anyone can build up a residual income of $200 to $500 in about a year (or less) in network marketing.  From this day forward, think of your MLM Business as an asset instead of a job.

# 6 Managing Your Time – Most network marketers struggle with time management.  Let’s face it; most folks who come home from a long day at work simply aren’t motivated to work their network marketing business.  By the time they get home, eat dinner, spend a little time with their family and turn on the television, the night is shot.

If you want to succeed in this business, you have to manage your time wisely.  You must be disciplined with your time.  You have to “schedule in” time to build your business every day, no matter what.  Wake up earlier, stay up later, work during lunch.  Get creative.  Find a set time you can work your business every day, and make it a priority.

Make sure that you schedule time in your day planner to build your business.  Plan it out or it won’t happen.  Life is going to go by quickly.  A few years from now, you will be happy that you were disciplined enough to make the time to build your network marketing business!

    That is exactly my problem too; taking on too much at the same time. Multitasking doesn’t seem to be my strong suit. I am much better at completing one chore at a time.

    It has been shown that for the most part, women are much better at multitasking than men are. No matter what the experts say, I still think multitasking can sometimes be overrated. What happens is a bunch of jobs that are completed, but not in as good a fashion as they could have been.

    Personally, I find that if I work one job at a time, the job will get done in a better fashion than if I am trying to do many jobs at once.

        Yes, you are correct. I have actually developed a system for myself that seems to be working quite well. I set a certain time period for a task or job and when the hourglass says time is up, I take a short break and move to the next task. When my allotted time is up, I will go back to my original task if it isn’t completed and will finish it. This system keeps me from trying to do several tasks at the same time, and my head is more clear on each job. It works for me.

    The Five Love Languages is a great book for relationships and businesses. It helps you to better understand how people feel loved and you can use what you learn to understand how people in your business (as customers or distributors) grow to feel valued and appreciated and then apply that knowledge to help you grow. I absolutely loved that book and I didn’t even think about it’s business applications until a few years after reading it. Great suggestion!

    For me, there are 2 items here that I know I need to always work on. The first one is people skills. In many ways, humans piss me off and I have a difficult time sometimes with being polite and kind to them. The other part of that equation is taking my feelings out on someone who doesn’t even deserve it. Someone cuts me off in traffic just before I have a business meeting and it shows. The other thing I sometimes have trouble with is time management. I need to learn to put my day in an orderly fashion.

      I too struggle with time management, but that is generally because I take on way too many projects than I can really handle. I always have the best intentions, but at times I need to just handle one task at a time instead of trying to do 4 or five things at one time.

      I have started making to-do lists where I prioritize tasks and then move down the list until I get everything done that I need to do. It has been working much better for me because I am less stressed and more focused.
