Chuck’s MLM Weekly Wisdom # 51 – August 26, 2015
Dear Network Marketer:
I hope you are happy, healthy and well. Here is this week’s edition of Chuck’s MLM Weekly Wisdom. Enjoy the training.
# 1 Building Your Business Through Affinity Groups
This is one of my favorite business building strategies of all time. Most people have never heard of this concept before, but it works very well. An affinity group is a group of people you have something in common with. This “common ground” makes it really easy to approach people and get along with them. When two people have something in common, it’s pretty easy to have a conversation.
The three affinity groups that I focus my time and effort on are other network marketers, small business owners and military personnel. I chose these three groups because I understand these people. I have experience in each one of these areas. I know what they think about. I know what their problems are. And when we chat we have common ground.
What I suggest you do is make a list of at least three to five affinity groups that you belong to. This could be people in your civic organization, other stay at home moms, people in your fraternity, people with the same work experience, people with the same hobbies, etc.
Your objective is to whittle your list down to just three groups and then come up with a game plan of how you can interact with people in the group. Perhaps you need to join a networking group, volunteer, buy a mailing list of similar people, or something else.
Leveraging affinity groups is a fun and simple way to expand your business. What do you think?
# 2 Quote of the Week
“Think like a customer.” ~ Paul Gillin
One of the best things you can do is put yourself in your prospect’s shoes. Think of things from their perspective and you will close more sales.
# 3 Skeptical Prospects are Some of Your Best Prospects
In most cases, most prospects will not sign up or buy what you are offering them the first time you talk with them. When this does happen, it actually worries me. What I look for in a prospect is someone who will sell themselves and put some thought into their buying decision. Most people who rush into the business rush out of it!
When someone is skeptical, has objections or has questions, do NOT let it bother you. It is a good thing. It’s natural. It means they need more information and more follow up! Most of the people I personally sponsor take me at least 10-20 follow ups before they join my team and most prospects don’t join until minimum 60 to 90 days from the first time I exposed them to the business.
If I only looked for people who are ready right now, I would be leaving a lot of money on the table. I would get frustrated and probably give up, because most people are not ready right now.
One of my mentors once told me that in five years from now your best people will be people who told you NO many times before they joined. Your best distributors will typically be the people who were the most skeptical at first. Food for thought.
# 4 Attraction Marketing Boot Camp
Today, I want to share a link for an attraction marketing boot camp I recently went through. You might not know it, but I have built my entire business through attraction marketing and really enjoy it. I started using this concept back in 2009. Attraction marketing is the process of “attracting” people into your business by educating others and providing value. This free 10 day boot camp is wonderful. I have gone through the training myself several times now. There is an option to purchase a $27 training manual, but it is not mandatory. I purchased it myself and think it is a great value. Check out the link and decide for yourself.
# 5 Meet People Where They Are At
It took me many, many years to learn this lesson, over a decade. I wish I would have learned it early on in my network marketing career. As a smart network marketer you need to meet people where they are at. Never try to pressure or convince someone to do more in the business than they want to.
Don’t make people feel bad if they just want to be a customer. Don’t pressure people to do the business. Don’t guilt trip people who simply want to get their products for free each month. Don’t harass people who only order the products, but do nothing to build their business. The truth is most of your organization will simply be product users. Not everyone has the desire or work ethic to make the big money!
Simply meet people where they are at and appreciate them. It takes EVERYONE to build volume and create a large team. Nearly 90 to 98% of your team will not be serious about the business. Accept it. Love on everyone but work with the willing.
# 6 Book of the Week
My book of the week this week is No B.S. Sales Success by Dan Kennedy. Dan is my most trusted business mentor and all of his No B.S. books are brilliant, even though they aren’t network marketing specific. They are mostly books about sales, marketing and lead generation: all things that network marketers struggle with. Order a copy on Amazon.
# 7 Be the Messenger, Not the Message
This is another valuable lesson that took me many years to learn. When you are talking to people you want to be the messenger not the message. That means that your job is to meet people and talk to people but use third party tools to share the business and products. Take yourself out of the equation.

# 11 The 10,000 Hour Rule
There is a rule I learned about in the book “Outliers.” It basically states that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert at anything. This applies to doctors, accountants, athletes, sales people, network marketing and every other profession.
It takes time to develop the proper skill set and mind set. It takes time to become an expert at something. It takes time to become world class at something.
If you are brand new to the industry, expect to go through a steep learning curve. Realize that there is a unique set of skills you will need to develop over a period of years. You should also realize that the more time you put into your business the quicker you will learn and the quicker your business will grow.
If you are working your business 20 hours per week, it’s going to take you minimum 10 years to become a world class network marketer. I’ve been doing this about 13 years now and I I’m pretty sure I just hit the 10,000 hour mark. That’s one of the reasons the business has become easy for me.
You must be willing to invest minimum 10,000 hours if you want to make it to the top.
# 12 Fire Your Upline
I heard this advice from Eric Worre for the first time several years ago. Basically, it means that starting today you take 100% responsibility for your own business. You don’t rely on your upline to do ANYTHING for you. You take ownership of your business and stop making excuses or paying the blame game.
The sooner you can man up or woman up with your business the better off you will be. By all means, leverage your upline’s expertise when needed, but don’t sit back and expect them to do everything for you. The sooner you can become independent of them the better. Remember that your success is up to you and no one else.
