Today, I’m going to teach you five things you need to build a big MLM Team. These are some valuable lessons I have learned during the past 17-years, mostly through trial and error.
To be honest with you, there are additional things that you could add to my list, but I believe these five things are the most important things to focus on for lasting MLM Success.
The Five Things You Need to Build a Big MLM Team
# 1 Leadership
What is leadership?
Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill encompassing the ability of an individual or organization to “lead” or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations. Source
I think John Maxwell says it best when says:
Leadership is influence.
Network marketing is a business of leadership. What makes it unique, and sometimes challenging, is that you are leading a volunteer Army. No one has to follow you or listen to you. Each person on your team is their own CEO.
First, you must become a leader yourself, so you can attract quality people into your business. Leaders want to work with other leaders. A stud will never join a dud, so you must be the type of person you want to sponsor. You also need a game-plan to find and develop leaders in your organization.
The best way to make this happen is to have some type of personal development plan for yourself and your team. Here are some simple things you can do to make this happen.
- Become an avid reader and have a reading list for your team.
- Spend time mentoring your people one-on-one and in a group setting.
- Look for quality people to recruit into your business, people with proven leadership experience and success.
- Look for “potential leaders” in your team that you can mentor and develop.
- Teach leadership and personal development at every event, on every call, and every webinar
- Always lead by example and be the type of person you want to sponsor AND be the type of sponsor you wish you had.
And remember this, the real beauty of network marketing is that you only need two to five good leaders to make a six figure income.
# 2 Systems
Let me start by educating you on what a business system is:
Systems and processes are the essential building blocks of our companies. Every facet of your business—on the shop floor, in the warehouse or in the office—is part of a system that can be managed or improved by applying correct principles.
A business system is designed to connect all of an organization’s intricate parts and interrelated steps to work together for the achievement of the business strategy. Source
Any business that is solely people dependent will FAIL. Successful businesses of all types are system dependent, not people dependent. You need two primary systems in your network marketing business.
First off, you need a system to find quality prospects. This is a step-by-step game-plan you use to find quality prospects for your business. It could include postcard marketing, your warm market, social media, calling leads or countless other things. Your system will teach your new team members how to find quality prospects AND what they should say to them (example scripts).
You also need a system to train your team. This should include a training manual, getting started video, webinars, conference calls, live events, a Facebook group, team training website, or something else.
Develop your systems as quickly as possible and do whatever you can to IMPROVE your systems. The system is the solution.
# 3 Duplication
If everything in your network marketing business depends on you, you will either burn out or max out.
Network marketing is about a lot of people each doing a little bit, not one person doing a lot. DUPLICATION is the key to success in MLM.
Duplication means that a percentage of your team, and hopefully a large percentage, do certain activities each day to move their business forward (retailing and recruiting).
Rather than adding 100 new people to your team yourself, you teach 100 people on your team each to recruit 1 new person. Does that make sense?
Of course, most of the people you sponsor will do nothing and quit. From personal experience, I’ve found that:
- 80% of the people on your team do nothing and quit (and normally within 1-3 months)
- 15% of your team do a little bit each month
- 4% of your team will consistently sponsor new people each month
- 1% will catch the vision and build it big
To get more duplication, you want to do ALL the things covered in this article. You want a simple system people can follow. You want to help people work on their personal development and leadership skills. You want a strong team culture that grows people and keeps them engaged.
# 4 Team Culture
Culture is everything, especially in our industry. What is culture?
Culture is the social behavior and norms found in human societies. Culture is considered a central concept in anthropology, encompassing the range of phenomena that are transmitted through social learning in human societies. Source
It’s important to remember that people want to belong to something bigger than themselves. People want to feel appreciated. People want to be recognized for their contributions. Most people crave attention and recognition, because they don’t get it at home or at work.
Your team culture is everything you do in your group that makes you unique. It could include certain awards, jargon, contests, recognition, events, and countless other things. Here are a few things I do in my own team to create a strong team culture, just to give you an example:
- We have a Beast of the Week competition every week
- We do lots of contests every week
- We have funny sayings and jargon
- We have a team coffee cup, wristbands, bumper stickers and more
- We have a Facebook group where people get recognized all the time
You don’t have to copy what I do, but make sure you create a strong team culture. Create a culture so strong that people want to stay even if they decide to stop doing the business.
# 5 Customers
Customers are the lifeblood of ANY business. Without customers, there is no business. While you don’t need to personally service hundreds of customers yourself, I believe EVERY MLM rep should aim to service two to five retail customers each month. If you want to serve more than that, that’s perfectly fine.
Just remember, network marketing is about a lot of people each doing a little bit, not one person doing a lot.
You should have training on how to find customers! You must lead by example and sell some products yourself each month so you can inspire others by your own personal example.
Teach people on your team how to retail the products. Conduct some product training so people have a basic understanding of the products or services your company offers. Teach people how to find prospects, sell and close.
This will help give them an immediate retail profit and legitimize their business at the same time. Plus, it will help EXPLODE the sales volume in your team.
There you have it folks. These are five things you need to build a big MLM Team. None of this is really rocket science, but many of these things are often overlooked. If nothing else, I hope you will evaluate your current organization and look for areas to improve.
