In this post, I want to share some of my best email marketing and auto-responder tips for network marketers.  Please keep in mind that most of this information will apply to ANY business owner, not just network marketers.

  • It is a program that manages your email contact list and automatically adds and removes people when requested
  • It sends out emails on your behalf, automatically, at a frequency you determine
  • It can automatically respond to emails sent to a certain email address
  • It is an email management program that allows you to build an email list, manage it with ease, and send out emails automatically
  • People enter their name and email into a form and they are automatically added to your email list and they will start receiving your emails at a frequency you choose
  • You can also manually add people to your auto-responder IF they gave you permission to do so
  • An auto-responder sends emails to people who give you permission to contact them – it’s not spamming
  • Auto-responders comply with the CAN-SPAM Act, as long as you provide a physical address and a way to unsubscribe
  • Each email has an “unsubscribe” button where people can remove themselves from your email list if they want to

I personally use and recommend Aweber.  I’ve been using them for about six years now and really enjoy their service.

I suggest you compare at least three different auto-responder services BEFORE you choose one.  That way you can be an educated consumer.

Reasons Why You Need an Auto-Responder for Your Network Marketing Business

# 1 To Build a List of LeadsThe money is in the list.  You’ve probably heard that before.  All businesses need leads.  Without leads your business is doomed.  Leads are people who have “opted-in” or requested more information about your products and/or business opportunity. Think of companies like Amazon® and eBay®.  They have MILLIONS of subscribers.  Once you visit their website and create a free account (opt-in) you become a lead and then send a variety of marketing messages to you to encourage you to become a paying customer.  MLM is no different.  If you don’t have a list, you don’t have anyone to share your products or business opportunity with.

# 2 Multiple Exposures – From personal experience I can tell you that most people will not buy from you the first time they learn about your products or business.  Most people will need at least five to twenty follow ups before they make the decision to buy.  Most network marketers, and entrepreneurs, do a crappy job with the follow up process.  Your auto-responder keeps you in touch with your prospect without you even thinking about it.  It’s 100% automated and automatic.

# 3 To Build a Relationship with Your Leads – People like to do business with people they know, like and trust.  Assuming you provide value in your email, and educate your prospect, there will come a point in time where they know you, like you and trust you and WANT to buy from you. It might take a few months, or even a few years to get to this point, but your auto-responder helps you build this relationship automatically.

# 4 To Educate Others About Your Products and Business – If your company offers a wide variety of products or services, your auto-responder can educate your prospects about each product or service, so they can decide if it is a good fit for them.

# 5 To Follow-Up and Stay In Touch Frequently – Smart entrepreneurs stay in touch with their prospects frequently.  If you don’t stay in touch with your prospects and customers, another business owner will!  You want to keep your business, products and services in the front of your prospect’s mind UNTIL they are ready to buy.

# 6 To Convert Prospects into Paying Customers or Distributors – Your auto-responder will definitely help you with conversions.  This is the process of converting leads into prospects and then converting prospects into customers.

# 7 To Leverage Yourself – Smart entrepreneurs leverage themselves whenever possible.  Your auto-responder gives you a great deal of leverage because you don’t have to maintain it.  Once people are added to your list, your emails automatically go out at the frequency you determine.  This saves you a lot of time to do other things in your business.

# 8 Provide Answers to FAQs – Your auto-responder can provide answers to frequently asked questions that your prospects have.  This saves you time with customer service.

# 9 Share Updates and Critical Information – If you have something critical or important to share you can send a quick, one-time email message to your list to get the time-sensitive material out.

# 10 To Get People to CONTACT YOU – When the timing is right, many of your prospects on your email list will eventually contact you to ask you more about what you have to offer.  I use my auto-responder to make my phone ring.

# 11 To Promote Events, Specials and Incentives – Auto-responders are a great way to give special, one time, limited promotion, such as a 24 hour sale.

# 12 Drive Traffic to Your Website – A good auto-responder sequence will send a steady flow of traffic back to your blog, website, or sales page.  This will lead to more sales.

Segmenting Your Email Lists

You want to create three separate LISTS within your auto-responder account.  These include:

Tips for Writing Good Emails

# 1 Pick a TOP NOTCH Subject Line – Like it or not, your subject line will ultimately determine how many people open your emails.  They need to be catchy and pique people’s interest.  They can be controversial, extreme, funny or entertaining.  Put a lot of thought into your subject lines. This is the most important part of your message.

# 2 Short and to the Point – Try to keep your emails to about 300 words or less.  Yes, they can be longer than that, but remember that most people have a very short attention span and won’t read a long email.

# 3 Appeal to People’s Emotions – We are emotional creatures.  We make emotional decisions and then justify it with logic.  Whenever possible, try to appeal to people’s emotions.  Focus on their hot buttons if you want them to buy or take action.

# 4 Conversational In Tone – The best emails are conversational in tone.  Don’t use business or academic writing.  Try to write as if you were talking to a close friend.  The more personal you can make the message the better.

# 5 Focus on Benefits, Not Features – Features tell, but benefits sell.  Whenever possible, focus on what your products or services will do to help someone, rather than focus on the features of your products.

# 6 Keep the Message Geared Around One Main Point – Keep each email message geared around one main point.  Don’t run on and on and on. In each email message, you only want your prospect to do one thing.

# 7 Focus On Educating, Not Selling – The best marketers focus on educating their prospects rather than trying to sell them.  Some people call this reverse selling or attraction marketing.

# 8 Proofread – Always proofread your email before you hit the send button.  Write your email, proofread it, leave for an hour, and then come back and read it one final time.  Even better, have someone else proofread it as well.

# 9 Be Optimistic and Kind – Don’t be a negative Nelly.  Be optimistic and nice.  Don’t sound arrogant or cocky.

# 10 Don’t Write Anything That Could Get You In Trouble – Never send an email when you are angry or upset or depressed.  Never send an email that could make you look bad.  Act as if every email you send would be used in a court case against you. Do that and you can’t go wrong!

Overall Success Tips with Your Auto-Responder

# 1 Communicate frequently, minimum once a week – The most successful marketers I know send a DAILY email to their list.  I’m not saying you have to do that, but at a bare bones minimum make sure you send at least one email each week.  From personal experience, I’ve found that sending two emails per week is very effective for me.

# 2 Send out a monthly email newsletter – Newsletters are a great way to stay in touch with your prospects.  I recommend you send out a monthly newsletter once a month.  Make sure that about 80% of the newsletter is valuable content and the other 20% can be promotional materials.  Focus on providing value with your newsletter, so your prospect looks forward to getting it.

# 3 Repurpose your content from you blog – If you have a blog like I do, you can repurpose some of your old blog content into helpful emails.  Go through some of your older content and see if you can edit it a little bit and create a crafty email message with it.

# 4 Use a P.S. line and sell with your signature file – Always use a P.S. line at the end of each email with a strong call to action.  This is where you can put your marketing message.  The P.S. line is quite perhaps the most viewed part of your email.

# 5 Use tracking links to see who opens each email and what they do – I also suggest you use tracking links so you can see who is opening your emails, clicking the links and making purchases.  These are your most responsive prospects.  Using analytics will help you determine which types of emails are most effective for you.

# 1 My auto-responder is the most important tool in my business.  I mean it.  I would give up my downline, this website, my mailing list and just about everything else I have before I gave up my list! When you have a list, you can join any company or promote any product and make money. In MLM, your list is the ONLY thing you really own, since you don’t own your downline, the intellectual property or the MLM Company itself.

# 2 EVERY network marketer needs their own auto-responder, even if they are building offline. Whether you are building belly-to-belly, or exclusively online like I do, you want to build a list. Everyone you talk to should be added to your list (as long as they give you permission to do so). What would your list look like if you have built a list of EVERY person you ever talked to about the products or business opportunity?  If you’ve been in the industry any period of time you would have thousands of people on your list.

# 3 The money is in the list.  Your list is like an ATM machine.  Once you have a good relationship with your list, you can recommend just about any type of product or service and lots of people will buy it from you!  Whenever you need more cash flow you can send out an email and make money on demand!  That’s how powerful a list is!

# 4 Build a list, build a good relationship with your list and monetize.  This is the key to success. Most people will typically only buy from people they know, like and trust.  Your objective is to build good relationships with everyone on your list.  You do that by educating others and offering solutions!  Make sure that your primary goal is to help educate your list, not sell them. Do that and your business will explode!  No one likes a sales person but everyone likes someone who is an expert, who helps them solve their own problems.

# 5 Stay in touch with people until they die or unsubscribe.  Once people opt-in to your list, don’t remove them.  If they don’t unsubscribe it means they are still interested in learning more about what you are offering. Your job is to keep sending messages until they buy, die or unsubscribe.

# 6 Focus MOST of your efforts on building your list.  Add new names to your list every day.  Realize that your job is to get people INTO your marketing funnel.  Once you do that your marketing funnel will take over from there!

In summary, every network marketer should have their own auto-responder and use email marketing to grow their business!  It will be the most important business tool that you can use. Building a list is the SMARTEST thing you can do when you are growing your network marketing business.  It allows you to follow up with ease, to stay in touch frequently, to increase conversions and to promote multiple streams of income.  I think it’s a win-win for most network marketers.

    What a great post Chuck…Most people would pay for all the information you provided here. I need to reiterate something you said at the beginning of this post, this is not just for network marketers. While I am a network marketer part time, I am a full time freelancer, and my list is also quite important. In managing a website, I do not have the time to write out emails one by one, and that is where my auto response and newsletter system works great. I use Mailchimp, but I have been considering jumping over to Aweber.

    Once your business takes form, I think you do realize pretty quickly how hard it can be to manage all of the tasks you have. Anything that makes the business run smoother or helps you manage the very aspects of the business is useful. I’ve benefited greatly from an auto-responder. I never want people to feel as though I don’t value their messages because those messages represent their feedback, opinions, ideas, etc. The auto-responder has allowed me to stay organized and consistent with my responses so no one is being ignored or left out. Definitely a tool I’d recommend to anyone.
