Today, I want to share my best article marketing strategies, tips and ideas. 

I’ve been doing article marketing, in some capacity, for more than 10-years now. Some people will tell you that article marketing is dead. I believe it is still alive and well, although it has certainly changed and evolved during the past five years. What worked a few years ago definitely will not work today.

You have to be creative, think outside of the box, and be different. In this post, I will teach you how to do that.

What is Article Marketing?

In my own words, article marketing is when you post high quality, unique content articles online in different article directories, in hopes of getting more exposure to your business. You write the article and you publish it on one of the popular article directories. Because the directories have many authors who can “share” your content, and the websites are normally ranked high in the search engines, you can get added traffic, inbound links and exposure to your website.

First off, article marketing is nowhere near as popular or effective as it once was, but I do believe that it would still benefit your overall marketing strategy. The reasons you could consider article marketing include:

# 1: Low Cost/Free

First and foremost, article marketing is practically free. Other than coming up with the content yourself, and maybe using some article marketing software, there are no additional costs. When compared to other costly marketing strategies such as pay-per-click, this can be a great low cost alternative, especially for someone on a tight budget.

# 2: More Exposure

The more articles you have posted online, the more exposure you will get for your business. I personally think it’s better to have 1 different article posted on 100 different websites than 100 articles posted on one website.

# 3: More Links

As of 2019, I do not believe there is any SEO benefit to the links you build via article marketing. However, I do believe there is a good value in HAVING LINKS that point to your website or capture page and potentially send you more traffic.

# 4: Passive Lead Generation

What I like most about article marketing is that you can write an article one time and it can send you traffic for many months, even years to come. I have articles I wrote six or seven years ago that still send traffic to my websites. Some of that traffic converts into leads and sales.

Articles drive traffic to your website. They help people come into contact with your business. Every article you post basically creates a first impression for business. It’s like some sort of a visit card. Apropos that, we can agree that if people don’t like your writing, the chances are they won’t like your products and services as well? It’s quite important that you do all that you can in order to provide your potential customers with quality content.

If you manage to interest your targeted audience, once the reader gets to the end of the article, he or she is invited to click on the link at the end for more information about you. There are hundreds of article marketing directories online. Some are good. Most are terrible. What you want is a reputable article marketing directory that only accepts high quality, unique content. It makes no sense to post articles on a website that gets very little, if any traffic, and your articles never get indexed or ranked by the search engines.

It also makes zero sense to post a low quality article to any article directory. What you will see below are some of the most popular article directories. They are listed in no particular order.

What I want to share below are my top 12 article marketing strategies and success tips. If you focus on this advice, I believe you can do very well with article marketing.

# 1: Know Your Target Market

Take the time and clearly identify your target market BEFORE you write your article. Who is your ideal customer? What are they interested in? Make sure the content of your article is geared toward that specific person.

# 2: Don’t be Boring

Being boring is just plain…boring! Find a way to be different. Be sarcastic. Be humorous. Find a creative way to differentiate yourself from your competition.

# 3: Help Your Reader Solve a Problem

People care about themselves. Keep your reader in mind and help them solve a problem. Or, show them how whatever product or service you are writing about will help them do that.

# 4: Showcase Your Expertise

This is your chance to shine! Showcase your expertise.

# 5: Focus on Just 2-5 Directories

Rather than trying to dominate ALL of the article directories at once, start out by focusing on a few. Build up your credibility there first. Build up your reputation. Figure out what works and take massive action. You can diversify and add additional directories to your portfolio in the months to come.

# 6: Stick to a Posting Schedule

You can’t just post 1-2 articles and expect much to happen. Ultimately, you want hundreds of articles. Come up with a posting schedule you can stick with, such as one new article per week. Have the discipline and stick to your schedule.

# 7: Only Post High Quality, Unique Content

Content may be the king, but high quality, unique content is the queen! Don’t post anything that would damage your reputation or make you come across as an amateur or non-professional.

# 8: Keyword Research

Research your keywords. Look for targeted keywords in your niche that aren’t overly competitive. Focus on the long-tail keywords.

# 9: Re-purpose Your Content

One of my favorite things about writing articles is that I can re-purpose my content into blog posts, podcasts, videos, Power Point slides and much more. This crates multiple pieces of content geared around the same thing.

# 10: Outsource

If possible, consider hiring someone to write articles for you. You can get this done at a fair price, normally for $20 to $40 per article. Just make sure you proofread and edit the article, and check to make sure it is original content (use Copyscape) before you post it to an article directory.

# 11: Include Your Links

Most article directories allow you to include two links at the end of your article as part of your author bio. This is where you want to include a link to your website and one to your capture page. If possible, use tracking links in each article so you know where your traffic is coming from.

# 12: Include a Great Bio

Your bio is at the end of your article. It is attached automatically. Ideally, you want your bio to be one or two sentences. It should have a strong call to action. Tell your readers what you want them to do next. Be specific. Also, make sure you include a photo of yourself so people can see that you are a real person. This is where your links are added.

Since we are a network marketing website, I wanted to included a section about how to use article marketing to grow your network marketing business. If you’re not involved with network marketing yourself, just skip this section.

I use articles to generate leads. I write articles about network marketing, company reviews, success tips and other relevant topics geared for my audience: other network marketers. They read the article, see the value in my content, and then check out my links. You want to use this same approach to grow your business.

Don’t just write about your company or your company’s products or services. That’s boring and ineffective. Instead, write about topics geared toward your target market. Here are some examples:

Most of my articles get posted on my own blog, or on other blogs. I also use MLM Gateway a lot. They are a credit based advertising website where you can write articles and earn free advertising credits for doing so. I get a lot of traffic and visitors from my articles I post there. Plus, the free advertising credits are an added bonus.

An Alternative to Article Marketing

I figured I would add in this final section and give you an alternative to article marketing. Ultimately, I do believe it’s much better to have your own blog than post your articles in article directories. You can write your own articles and post them on your own blog, so you are in control of the entire editorial and publishing process.

Another option is to be a guest poster on other popular blogs. Perhaps, you could team up with another blogger who has a popular website, but is busy and doesn’t have time to publish new content every week. The two of you could work out an arrangement. You might even get paid to publish your content on their website.

The options are endless. And if you don’t like to write, you could always do podcasts or videos instead. Those work great too.
