Ambit Energy Review

Ambit Energy is a retail energy company that offers electricity and natural gas for consumers in the United States via the network marketing business model.

The retail energy industry is the largest industry to ever deregulate in American history. Since the deregulation of the energy industry, consumers now have more options of where they can purchase their natural gas and electricity from. Although the services are still delivered the same way as before to each residence, consumers can now choose who they purchase the energy from.

This deregulation has made an immediate positive impact for consumers, because now companies must compete with other companies. This encourages competition, lower prices, better customer service, and provides real value to consumers. When you have more than one option, you can comparison shop and find the best deal. On the other hand, when there is a monopoly, you typically get the short end of the stick.

About Ambit

Ambit is a privately owned network marketing company. It first opened for business in 2006. Ambit was started by Jere Thompson, Jr. and Chris Chambless of Texas. The two entrepreneurs brainstormed the business idea in a local Potbelly Restaurant in Dallas. From day one, the company grew quickly. Since inception, the company has done more than $1.2 billion in revenue and served more than one million customers. Boom!

The company doesn’t produce energy itself. Instead, it buys energy at wholesale prices and then lets its independent sales force sell the energy through the direct sales/network marketing business model. The company processes orders, handles billing, resolves customers service issues, tracks commissions, and pays its distributors.

On the other hand, the independent sales force educates consumers about the services and business opportunity. Since inception, more than 600,000 have joined the company as independent agents. The corporate headquarters is in Dallas, Texas. The company is a proud member of the Direct Selling Association.

When I reviewed their Better Business Bureau page today (Feb 7, 2022), they maintain an A+ rating. There are 144 customer reviews with an average of 2.73 out of 5 star rating. There were 242 complaints closed in the past three years.

As the company enters more states, it should continue to experience significant growth and become a multi-billion dollar company. With revenues of a few hundred million dollars in a just a handful of markets, think about how big the company will be if it expands into all fifty states?

Ambit Energy currently offers its services in:

  1. California
  2. Connecticut
  3. Delaware
  4. Illinois
  5. Indiana
  6. Maine
  7. Maryland
  8. Massachusetts
  9. New Hampshire
  10. New Jersey
  11. New York
  12. Ohio
  13. Pennsylvania
  14. Rhode Island
  15. Texas
  16. Virginia
  17. Washington DC

The company also does business in Japan and Canada.

Tips on Joining Ambit

You can join Ambit Energy as a customer or as a distributor. As a customer, you simply switch your electric and/or natural gas provider to Ambit. This could help you save money on your electric bill (please price check it first). As a customer, you can refer others to Ambit Energy and receive discounted bills and additional rewards, too. It doesn’t cost you anything to become a customer. On average, customers save between one and seven percent, compared to their regular utility company (from what I found online). Keep in mind this could change, or vary from state to state, so please do your due diligence.

As a distributor, you are a customer of the service and you help other people join the business opportunity or sign up as customers. You share the business opportunity and service with friends, family members, and acquaintances through one-on-one presentations, in-home meetings, and conference calls. When people sign up as distributors, you help them find customers and new distributors. It’s that simple.

As you progress through the achievement levels, you can also earn leadership bonuses, rewards, cash incentives, trips and more. From what I found online, the company does a great job rewarding its distributors.

It would be in your best interest to team up with a SUCCESSFUL rep. Since our industry has a high turnover, you don’t want to team up with someone who is not 100% committed. I’d look for a sponsor who has been in the business at least two years, has proven success, is willing to help you, and has a system for you to use to grow your business.

Please know that this is not a get rich quick scheme. It is a legitimate business opportunity that requires lots of hard work and consistent effort. No business is fast, free, or easy. If it was, everyone would do it. All business ventures come with a certain level of risk and require special skills, hard work, patience, consistency, and even a little bit of luck.

FAQs

Can I purchase Ambit stock?

Ambit is privately owned so you cannot purchase stock in the company. On a side note, I must tell you that I wouldn’t be surprised if Ambit goes public within the next few years and issues their own Ambit stock (just my thoughts). They have so many things going for it at the present moment and definitely have the potential for a huge IPO.

Ambit Energy Customer Service

From what I found online, you can call, message, email, or mail customer service. The customer service hours for customers are Monday through Sunday, 7 am to 10 pm, central time. You can call toll-free at (877) 282-6248.

Consultant support is offered Monday through Saturday by calling toll free (877) 302-6248.

Ambit Energy Outage

From what I could find online, Ambit has great up time. There are few outages. In the event an outage happens, this is what the corporate website recommends:

Whether you’re a residential energy Customer, a commercial energy Customer or one of our Consultants, we want every contact you have with Ambit Energy to be a positive experience. We understand that without loyal customers and successful Consultants we have no business. What Others are Saying About Ambit

I’ve scoured the internet for reviews and testimonials about Ambit. I have decided to share some good and bad reviews, to share a balanced story, along with the source I am citing the information from.

Good Experience

I have used Ambit Energy for almost 3 years. I never have any issue with renewed and the rate they give is normally cheaper than all other ESCO, I don’t understand those comments below. There is always needed renewing for fix rate, if not then you will switch to the variable rate automatically. Common sense people! You always need to renew no matter what company you used. ~ Andy, Consumer Affairs

They Cost Me More Money Than I Saved

I had an electric supplier rate contract with Ambit with an end date in the middle of next month. I just happened to look at my electric bill and realized that I was actually billed the higher electric company standard rate for the last month and a half (during my Ambit contract, which shouldn’t happen). I called my electric company and they told me to contact Ambit for an explanation. The Ambit representative tried to give me the runaround and blamed it on the electric company. She was evasive in answering my questions and said that a new PURA regulation caused this To happen to my account. What? I’m an attorney and I can tell when someone’s lying. I called my electric company back, and a second rep told me that Ambit did not update my account information with them pursuant to the PURA regulation. It was Ambits fault and they lied and tried to cover their error. First I thought they just forgot to notify me but then I realize they actually caused the problem as well. Ambit left me a voicemail a few days ago, not to tell me what had happened or to reimburse me for the higher rate I paid, but to ask me to renew with them next month, and they asked me to renew with them again when I called today! This tells me they don’t comply with regulations, and they lie to their customers. I wonder how many other customers were affected by their error and have not even noticed they are paying a higher rate yet. Ambit did nothing to try to make it right except try to blame the electric company for not notifying me, but I was Ambits electric supply customer. I’m looking further into this and will be contacting my state AGs office. ~ MMM, CT Energy Ratings

Different from the Rest

I have been so pleased with Ambit Energy since we became customers in the Fall of 2011. We had been with one of the largest retail companies in Texas for 34 years and I discovered that we were paying way too much for our electricity. I had to do something!! Right away we started paying less each month. After 11 months our light bill came over 70-80% lower! We now receive Free Electricity Credit every single month!! I am so thankful that God brought Ambit Energy to us!!! ~ Ruth, Texas Electricity Ratings

Just Terrible

Ambit Energy is trash. Today I had my power turned off because of a payment processing failure on THEIR end. Initially their customer service rep urged me to contact my bank and charged me a handful of fees to reconnect my power. After contacting the bank and speaking to a supervisor it was revealed that Ambit Energy was updating their system which caused the payment to fail. I’m addition to all of that they send me trash emails on a weekly basis, but when it came to a change in my account status and disconnecting my power, that decreased the amount of their communication to the bare minimum – they sent a letter in the mail and nothing else. Why would you want to decrease your communication down to the least used method today? Terrible company. ~ Blake M., Yelp

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, I believe that Ambit Energy is a reliable, reputable network marketing company. Before you pursue the business opportunity, I think you should try out their services as a customer first to see how much money you can save on your energy bills. If you like the service and think it is a good value for customers, then you should sign up as a distributor so you can share it with others.

Please know that I am in no way affiliated with Ambit Energy. The purpose of this review is to educate you about the company. Ambit Energy is a registered trademark. All information in this review was collected from independent research (sources cited).

On a side note, if you are currently involved with the company as a customer or distributor, I would love to hear your story. Please share your testimonial or success story with others, so we can spread the word about Ambit Energy. Just leave a comment below to share your thoughts. Thank you.

  1. Avoid AMBIT ENERGY. I have been saddled with higher bills (they are requiring a surcharge to TXU) and they say they are NOT receiving payments and charging disconnect fees! Also, there is a $199 fee to break the contract.
The poorest customer service on the planet. It took three days to reach a human being! Then, that customer service representative could not help us!!
There are a lot of other choices, this is NOT one of them!

  2. I am glad they we are seeing major energy deregulation. It is bound to bring the amount companies charge down for the consumers. It happened to the telephone industry. It seems when things such as phones and energy have more competition, we tend to see huge drops in what customers have to pay.

As someone commented, I would also like to see more posts about energy MLMs. If there are any Solar ones, that would be great too.

You do a wonderful job keeping us all aware of many MLMs that we didn’t even know existed. Thanks for the magnificent work you do Charles. It is very appreciated.

  3. Ambit Energy sounds like a really interesting company, mainly for the reason that I think it’s so cool you can buy energy wholesale and retail it via independent agents. Typically when I think of MLM businesses, I think of tangible objects like health and wellness products and home care products, not intangibles such as electricity and natural gas. Also, I think it’s a genius idea to start a network marketing business in an industry that has recently been deregulated. When the people no longer have to buy their energy from one source, they will hunt around for better, competitively priced options. If your company is there from the start offering the same energy at better prices, people will jump at the opportunity. Strike while the iron is hot!

  4. How interesting that an energy company uses a direct sales model. Incentives are a great way to bring in customers and that would certainly make me consider Ambit for our energy needs. I am glad to get the background information about Ambit and about their referral program. Everyone could use a free energy bill!

  5. Thank you for sharing with us about how Ambit offers services for both sides of the coin- users and providers. I have done a lot of work with small businesses- my own and others- and have been on both sides of the deal. There is a big difference between being the user and being the provider, so it is nice to know Ambit offers services for both!

  6. I am surprised to read that Ambit has been around for so long. The independent energy companies have just begun to really make themselves know in my area. Of course, the huge unionized power companies in my area are really up in arms. I can understand why they would be concerned: this seems like a very good alternative to the very limited choices we have now. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Yes, I think the independent power companies are a good thing. Competition almost always benefits the consumer! It gives us better prices and better options. I can see why the “normal” power companies are upset: they no longer have a monopoly on the market! I think Ambit is a great choice for many people. Just call the company and do your research first, so you can be an educated consumer.

  7. I was looking forward to joining Ambit as a distributor and was searching for some detailed information about company’s history, performance and reliability. I am glad to find this blog article that has given me a complete insight about this retail energy company. It makes me more confident that Ambit offers good opportunities for business along with incentives, rewards, trips and a lot more. I will now move ahead to join Ambit.

    1. I am in a Health and Wellness business which I intend to stay, Should I join any other company,it will not be
about dietary supplements. So, I am studying North American Power as a utility supplier and possible source of income. I have already attended meetings and checked Ambit with personal associates. I do not put them down. They are doing honest work in free enterprise, I suggest posting views of North American Power. I am studying it. From what I have gathered so far, I will most likely sign with sign with them.
How about doing a review on them?
      Cheers
      Gene Henley
