Action cures fear in network marketing. Mark Yarnell taught me that important lesson. To be quite frank with you, I already knew that from something I read in The Magic of Thinking Big, but Mark Yarnell definitely reinforces it with his training videos and books.

What is Fear?

Here are two definitions I found of fear online:

An unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.


An unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger.

If I was to put it in my own words, I would define fear as being scared of something, whether real or not. 

What are MLM Reps Scared of?

Everyone has fear. I do and so do you. The most common fears in life are fear of failure and fear of rejection. Those are also the two biggest fears that most MLM Distributors have: rejection and failure.

Some people even fear success. I’m not sure why that happens, but it does. In most cases this “fear” paralyzes people and causes them to do NOTHING with their network marketing business. Here are a few examples:

  • They don’t talk to prospects because they fear their prospect will say NO.
  • They don’t approach people in their warm market because they fear what the other person will think, or because they don’t want to say the wrong thing and look dumb.
  • They don’t take their business seriously because they think what if it doesn’t work for me?
  • They read books, attend seminars and listen to motivational tapes, but never take action and APPLY that knowledge.
  • They fear that if they are successful they will lose their friends.

I learned in the Army that it’s okay to have fear. Everyone is scared of something. It’s how you REACT to those fears that really matters most. The key to success is to not let your fears control you. Rather than have your fear control your actions, let your actions control your fears. 

You see, the only way to cure your fear in your network marketing business is to take action. Take one step at a time. Do something small to grow your business today. Step out of your comfort zone and do something that makes you uncomfortable.

Talk to a stranger. Call a lead. Just do something. And then take another step. As you keep taking steps over a period of time something funny will happen. Your fears will eventually disappear. What was once uncomfortable for you will now be FUN to do (or at least tolerable)!

  • You will look forward to sharing your business opportunity with prospects.
  • You will enjoy introducing yourself to the sharp looking prospect because you are confident in yourself and what you have to offer.
  • You will put a smile on your face as you do a group presentation because you know it moves your business forward.
  • You will have confidence in yourself, your products and your business opportunity.
  • You will feel worthy and deserving of success.

Here’s the bottom line. It’s okay to be scared. But you can’t let your fears control you. If you want to overcome your fears in network marketing (or in life) you have to take action. That is the only way to cure your fears.

The more you do something the more comfortable you will get with it. If there is something holding you back in your business (fear) make it a point to take baby steps so you can get through it.

5 Ways to Overcome Your Fears in Network Marketing

# 1: Focus on the Big Picture

One of the best things you can do to overcome your fears in network marketing is to focus on the big picture. Keep your WHY and goals in front of you at all times. Have such a big WHY that you become unstoppable. When your WHY is big enough the facts don’t matter. On the other hand, if you only focus on the petty, trivial things, you won’t survive the ups and downs of this business.

# 2: Detach Yourself From The Outcome

You must be emotionally detached to what others say, think or do. The only things you can control in this business are what YOU do and what YOU think. You can’t control who gets in, who builds or who quits. If your emotional well being is dictated by what others say, think and do, you will be an emotional roller coaster and you will quit. Don’t let that happen to you. Focus on what you can control and ignore everything else.

# 3: Be Enthusiastic 

Enthusiasm is contagious. The more enthusiasm you display when talking with prospects, the better your conversions will be. Check your attitude daily, especially before talking with prospects. Look for the positive side of things.

# 4: Work On Your Personal Development

One of the best ways to overcome your fears in network marketing is to work on your personal development. It’s true, your business will only grow as much as you do. You must keep learning and growing so you can become more likable and relatable with your prospects. The more you learn, the more you will improve your skills, and the better you will do in your business.

# 5: Do The Things You Fear The Most

Once again, action cures fear.

  • If you fear prospecting, go prospecting.
  • If you fear the follow-up, go follow-up with a prospect.
  • If you fear selling, go sell a product.

Action cures fear! Do the things you fear and watch your fears go away!

The Book That Helped Me Deal with My Fears

There is a famous, best-selling book titled The Magic of Thinking Big. I believe it was written in the 1950s. This is the one book that really helped me overcome my fears and self-limiting beliefs in life. It is written by Dr. David Schwartz.

The thesis of the book is that most people underestimate themselves. Most people sell themselves short and think WAY too small. To succeed in life, you need to think BIG. If you struggle with fears of ANY kind, I suggest you study the material in this book.

If more people would just realize that its okay to be afraid, but you can’t let that fear control you, there would be more successful network marketers (and people in general). I agree with you, you can’t let your fear paralyze you………do something about it!

  2. That is so true: fear is normal, and without it, you cannot be brave. Remember that most of the time no one knows that you are scared but you. Familiarizing yourself with the product, and using and loving it yourself will really boost your confidence. Put on your game face and get out there.
