Action cures fear in network marketing. Mark Yarnell taught me that. To be quite frank with you, I already knew that from something I read in “The Magic of Thinking Big”, but Mark Yarnell definitely reinforces it with his training videos and books.
What is Fear?
Here are two definitions I found of fear online:
An unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.
An unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger.
If I was to put it in my own words, I would define fear as being scared of something, whether real or not.
What are MLM Reps Scared of?
Everyone has fear. I do and so do you. The most common fears in life are fear of failure and fear of rejection. Those are also the two biggest fears that most MLM Distributors have: rejection and failure.
Some people even fear success. I’m not sure why that happens, but it does. In most cases this “fear” paralyzes people and causes them to do NOTHING with their network marketing business. Here are a few examples:
- They don’t talk to prospects because they fear the prospect will say NO
- They don’t approach people in their warm market because they fear what the other person will think, or because they don’t want to say the wrong thing and look dumb
- They don’t take their business seriously because they think “what if it doesn’t work for me?”
- They read books, attend seminars and listen to motivational tapes but never take action and APPLY that knowledge
- They fear that if they are successful they will lose their friends
Action Cures Fear in Network Marketing
I learned in the Army that it’s okay to have fear. Everyone is scared of something. It’s how you REACT to those fears that really matters most. The key to success is to not let your fears control you. Rather than have your fear control your actions, let your actions control your fears.
You see, the only way to cure fear in your network marketing business is to take action. Take one step at a time. Do something small to grow your business today. Step out of your comfort zone and do something that makes you uncomfortable.
Talk to a stranger. Call a lead. Just do something. And then take another step. As you keep taking steps over a period of time something funny will happen. Your fears will eventually disappear. What was once uncomfortable for you will now be FUN to do (or at least tolerable)!
- You will look forward to sharing your business opportunity with prospects
- You will enjoy introducing yourself to the sharp looking prospect because you are confident in yourself and what you have to offer
- You will put a smile on your face as you do a group presentation because you know it moves your business forward
- You will have confidence in yourself, your products and your business opportunity
- You will feel worthy and deserving of success
Here’s the bottom line. It’s okay to be scared. But you can’t let your fears control you. If you want to overcome your fears in network marketing (or in life) you have to take action. That is the only way to cure your fears.
The more you do something the more comfortable you will get with it. If there is something holding you back in your business (fear) make it a point to take baby steps so you can get through it.
5 Ways to Overcome Your Fears in Network Marketing
# 1 Continue To Move Forward
I have always been a fan of Ray Higdon. Some may assume he has never felt doubt and/or fear. I’m sure, honest person Ray is, he would tell you that he has felt both doubt and fear many times. But the reason people assume he hasn’t is because Ray keeps moving despite the fear; despite the doubt.
Simply put, you have to ignore it and just keep moving forward. And if you really think about it, that is the primary way to overcome fear and doubt.

# 2 Detach Yourself From The Outcome
What often happens to new network marketers is, they are so sure that they will recruit every person they talk to, when someone says no, they go into a tailspin.
They attached themselves to the outcome. They believed they gave the best presentation they could, but they were rejected. Now suddenly, that network marketer begins to fear giving the presentation to everyone.
If you are new to MLM, you need to know that you are just the messenger. You cannot control that person’s thoughts, words or actions. You cannot attach yourself to outcomes. Maybe your sponsor gave you the wrong impression; not every person you talk with will join.
And for you MLM leaders, be sure your recruits know that they will get no’s. They will get rejected and that is okay. You must let rejection “roll off your back” and move on to the next person as if they were the first person you spoke with today.

# 3 Be Enthusiastic
I believe in this area, I may be speaking to a lot of introverts.
Because introverts are often fearful of striking up a conversation with strangers, I say bring on the passion and enthusiasm. If you have a smile on your face and a perkiness in your walk, people will be attracted to you and instead of you having to start a conversation, they will ask you what you do…
And boom! You can show them why you are so passionate and enthusiastic. Your confidence will rise and your doubt and fear will dissipate.

# 4 Work On Your Personal Development
The more you learn and grow, the less you will doubt and fear.
I suggest you make time daily to grow your knowledge. Read books, watch videos, attend seminars and webinars and seek out a mentor. Education dispels doubt and fear.
# 5 Do The Things You Fear The Most
You know, I owe this lesson to a man who was nicknamed Mouse. Mouse was a crane operator back when I took a job building a bridge over the Elkhorn River in Nebraska.
But I was scared.
I just didn’t do well with heights. And Mouse could see it, so he helped me get over it real quick.
“Hey Greg, jump in the basket and I am going to take you out to the first pier to get the tools.”
Apprehensively, I agreed. And Mouse gave me the ride of my life. He took the basket high, then low (touching my feet to the water), and he swung me high, low, sideways, every-ways and I was screaming like a little girl. And the co-workers were laughing.
When he set me down, Mouse brought over 2 cold PBR’s and handed them to me and said, “You won’t be scared anymore.” And I wasn’t!
That’s the answer… Write down all your fears. Now each week, go find a way to do one of them. Follow the Nike slogan and just do it. It works!
The Book That Helped Me Deal with My Fears
There is a famous, best-selling book titled “The Magic of Thinking Big.” I believe it was written in the 1950s. This is the one book that really helped me overcome my fears and self-limiting beliefs in life. It is written by Dr. David Schwartz.
The thesis of the book is that most people underestimate themselves. Most people sell themselves short and think WAY too small. To succeed in life, you need to think BIG. If you struggle with fears of ANY kind, I suggest you study the material in this book.
