What is the 3×9 Matrix MLM Compensation Plan? And what should you know about it?
This is a new and popular compensation plan in the network marketing industry that many companies are using. It’s definitely gaining in popularity.
What I want to do in the paragraphs below is teach you more about it, and talk about the good and the bad things about this compensation plan.
A matrix compensation plan simply means that you are limited to how many people you can personally sponsor on your first level. In other words, you have a SET amount of open positions on your first level. The most common amounts are 3, 5, 7 or 9.
For example, if you have five set positions on your first level, anyone you sponsor after your fifth person would go on your second level or below. You can still sponsor as many people as you want, you’re just limited to where you can place them.
A 3×9 Matrix MLM Compensation Plan simply means that you have the following:
- 3 positions on your first level
- 9 positions on your second level
- 27 positions on your third level
- 81 positions on your fourth level
- 243 positions on you fifth level
- 729 positions on your sixth level
- 2,187 positions on your seventh level
- 6.561 positions on your eight level
- 19,683 positions on your ninth level
*** Total of 29,523 positions/people in your team
This might sound exciting to you initially, but what you don’t realize is that your tenth level would be 59,049 people alone! That’s more than twice the amount of people on your first through ninth levels combined.
If you are someone who knows how to build a big team, joining a matrix compensation plan really limits you (as I see it). It can definitely limit your income compared to other types of plans. The real money in MLM always comes in depth, and if you are limited on how many levels you can get paid on, you will leave a lot of money on the table.
Another problem I have with matrix plans is that they encourage laziness in your team. People will expect you to place people on their team to help them, and they know that you will have to because you are limited in your own spots. I don’t like this idea and I’ve found that most network marketing leaders don’t like it either.
Of course, not everything is bad about the 3×9 matrix plan either. Some of the good things are that you will have people in your upline helping you add members to your team. And you will be helping your new team members earn a small check too, from your efforts. In addition, getting paid on 29,000+ people potentially is pretty exciting.
At the end of the day, only you can decide what type of compensation plan is best for you. I think this plan is a great deal for the part-timer just looking to make a few hundred extra dollars per month. And for the heavy hitter, I would recommend other plans, such as a uni-level.

As I see this 3×9 matrix compensation plan, I view it as both good and bad. Almost all compensation plans have both good and bad. I agree with you that this can cause laziness, but a wise sponsor could use it in their advantage too. You have so many under you and you have to place new members under one of them. You could have a contest, or just place them under the person who is actually doing the work.
I would love to see you do posts about all the different compensation plans. The pros and cons of each. You may even want to share what companies use what plan. This may help people decide on a MLM company to join.

I agree with what others have said about a limiting compensation plan being a turn off. I think this plan is effective for 2 kinds of people: part-timers and MLM newcomers. If I was new to MLM I think it would be helpful to have limitations on the number of people I could sponsor, because honestly I wouldn’t have the experience or the knowledge at that point to sponsor a massive team. I think the 3 x 9 matrix is a good plan, but it would be more suitable for folks who know how to build big teams if after a certain level the matrix ended and the number of possible team members could be infinite.
It’s not a bad compensation plan. I just don’t think it’s the greatest plan to work with.
I like the idea of limiting the amount of people you can personally sponsor. Though we’d like to think we are supermen and superwomen who can do it all, I think people function much better when they can give a majority of their time and attention to a small select group of individuals. If you stretch yourself too thin, you will only be able to invest a minimal amount in each person which hurts them and the company in the long-term.
You definitely want to be smart about who and how many people you sponsor. You only have so much time to invest in people. Choose those people wisely.
Any limitations put on what you can earn and what you can do in terms of growing our business seems like a bad idea to me. You did a great job explaining what the 3×9 Matrix MLM plan is like and what it is all about- thanks for the great info!

You do a great job of explaining the 3×9 matrix MLM compensation plan, and while I am not sure that I completely understand it after just one reading, I can tell that I would not be enthused about this. When ever a compensation plan limits your earning potential, that is a real turn-off for me. After all, isn’t unlimited earning potential why we get into MLM businesses in the first place?
The # 1 reason I don’t want to join a matrix plan is because it really limits you, especially if you know how to build a big team. I also don’t like the welfare mentality it produces with your team members. People will expect you to put people on their team, and I don’t like that idea. I think it breeds laziness.
You hit on some of the things that bothered me too about the system. It sounds good at first but as you dig deeper you begin to see some of the problems that exist with it and you can see how it might not be the best fit for you and your business.
I don’t think it’s a bad compensation plan. It works for some people, but it definitely isn’t for everyone.
