Today, I want to share three qualities you need to succeed in network marketing. As I see it, these qualities listed below are all NON-NEGOTIABLE. Look at any top earner and you will see these qualities within them, regardless of their race, gender, age, background and upbringing.
The three qualities are (1) a big burning desire, (2) the willingness to work, and (3) teachability. I will cover each quality in greater detail below.
1. A Big Burning Desire to Succeed
All success starts with desire. Without desire, nothing will happen. Sure, lots of people WANT things in life, but I describe a burning desire as something deep down inside of you that you have to have and you are willing to do whatever it takes to succeed.
Lots of folks say they want wealth, they want a great marriage, they want to lose weight, etc. but they aren’t willing to do the work and make the required sacrifices to get it. Simply put, the thing isn’t important enough for them to make the commitment, follow through and be disciplined.
You want to be on the look out for people who are sick and tired of being sick and tired and want to make changes in their life. Look for people who want to change their financial future and are HUNGRY for success. Those will be your best prospects.
On a side note, people will fool you. People will tell you they are motivated and hungry, but they won’t do the work! That does happen from time to time.
2. Willingness to Work
This is where you lose most people in MLM. Everyone wants the money top earners have. Everyone wants the fame and respect. Everyone wants to make it to the top of the compensation plan, but FEW people have the willingness to work. People will think about their business all the time, but very few will do the work it takes to make it to the top.
Personally, I disregard what people tell me and watch their actions. Actions do speak louder than words. People must have the discipline to schedule time in their lives to build their network marketing business. It won’t happen by accident.
I’ve personally found that busy people get things done. People who say they don’t have the time are usually lazy, unmotivated and undisciplined. People ALWAYS make time for things that are important to them.
Look for people who are hard workers and want to improve their lives. Look for the busiest people you know. If people have a lot of free time, they typically aren’t a very good prospect.
3. Teachability
This is another area that a lot of people struggle with. Lots of folks are hard headed and self centered. They aren’t willing to listen to others. They aren’t open minded. It’s their way or the highway! Personally, I think that’s a big mistake.
You want to find people who realize that their way DOESN’T WORK. Their way has caused them to be broke and unhappy. You want folks who are open minded enough to realize that they need help and don’t know what they are doing.
You want folks who will take advice from a top earner and HUMBLE themselves enough to listen to that person.
Final Thoughts
There you have it folks. These are three qualities you need to succeed in network marketing: a big burning desire to succeed, a willingness to work, and teachability. What’s great about our industry is that it doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t matter your gender, race, age, political views, upbringing, experience or background. Anyone can make it to the top!
All you need to do is have these three things and then have the disicpline to follow through UNTIL you succeed.
What are your thoughts? What qualities do you think are most important to succeed in MLM? Leave your comments below to let me know what you think.

Great article. We live in a world of instant gratification. People want results now, they aren’t prepared to put in the effort for any length of time. I heard a great comparison -if all you did was turn up to 3 meetings a month in your ‘day job’ how long would you keep your job for? And would you expect to get paid a decent wage? Of course not so why do people who haven’t put in the work expect the money just to flood in with network marketing?!
I couldn’t agree more.
Yes, a strong work ethic will take you so far. It is so frustrating to have people come into the MLM world with an attitude that things will just happen for them without the investment of time and energy and hard work. Nothing in life is free and in order to be a success you have to practice successful habits and think like a success. Thanks for highlighting this concept.
I agree. Many Americans are hurting in this area: strong work ethic. Lots of folks want something for nothing.
This is great advice for all aspects of life. You are right: no one wants to be unsuccessful. We all want to succeed. Many of us even write daily ‘to-do’ lists or even long term goals. But without the willingness to work and sacrifice, those lists just sit and collect dust. The teachability aspect is also key. Seek out a mentor and then listen. Just as you can learn from your mistakes, save yourself some time and trouble and just be open to learning from the mistakes of others.
Glad I could help. Like you said, these tips really apply to anything in life.
